Hey, i admit im kinda scared.

Ok, I have tons of questions about this "lucid dreaming".

First, I want you all to know that i've known about lucid dreaming for a few weeks now, and have had about one or two. I didnt use any techniques or dream journals or anything, but im remebering my dreams alot better now.

I want to start WILD. I would love to know if anyone has actually achieved a WILD, how often can you have it, how long it takes to have your first one.

Also, I'm probably not what you would call "mentally healthy". I'm kinda OCD, and ADHD. I'm really worried that my minds is going to wonder on some horrible thought or memory from a horror movie. I really need help with clearing my mind am im kinda scared that ill lucid dream but have a terrible one.

Finally, can someone die of fright? Can someone actually have and OBE, can you force an OBE? What is "sleep paralysis" and is it dangerous? And is lucid dreaming dangerous like in the matrix where if you die in a dream you actually die?

Please answer these questions.

P.S. This is probably completely random, but what are the first symptoms of swine flu? I think i have it cause tons of my close friends are infected and i fit all the symptoms except for the fever. I heard that you need a fever to have swine flu, but when do you actually start having a fever? 3 days after infection? a week?

WILD: Lay completely still dont move a muscle, after some time your body is going to send out very strong signals like your not comfirtable ahum, you want to swallow and so on, but that's only to see if your body is awake. So if you ignore this signals your going to have sleep paralysis MIND AWAKY BODY ASLEEP. Then you start to see som wierd patterns and colours, In this state visualise your dream and then you become lucid :)

Hmm clearing your mind, maybe a very strong will power to dream something special or meditation?

And no you cant die in a lucid dream :P ut I dont want to scare you, but i have heard of people that have felt pain in their dreams. But thats only visualisation too =) Sorry for my english :P

WILD (in my experience) is not easy. It takes a lot of willpower, and I hear can be quite frightening. I've been trying for almost a year, and had 1.
Dreaming is not like the Matrix. If you die in your dream, you will not die IRL. I've never died in a dream, but I've read that you either wake up or the dream just keeps going, but you're a ghost or something in the dream.
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about OBE, swine flu, or mental conditions, so I can't help you there...

Try this:

Get a film or episode of a TV show that you can recite all of without any help - from memory (or learn one) - onto your Ipod, dont go to sleep until around 1-2 AM, plug the Ipod in, turn the film on, watch about 5 mins of the program/film, then lay it down next to you, and lye on your back, close your eyes, and visualise the scenes of the programme, the people etc, in your mind. keep it goin until you fall asleep. I thought this up and tried it out last night - with results in about 5 minutes. But, being a newbie myself, I freaked and pulled out of the dream, with a little SP still in effect.

Give it a go, for me, i saw swirling colours which formed the outline of my room, defined themself, and I woke into my dream.

PS. Still testing, you may want to shift your attention to the room you are sleeping in before you 'false awaken' yourself, and let it stabilise a little, then do a reality check. For the brief 5 seconds I was in the dream, I was absoultely aware that I was dreaming.

You can definitely use lucid dreams for confronting nightmares, for understanding yourself better, and for having fun of course.

A good thing to know about lucid dreaming is that you can be lucid, but not be able to control the dream. Or you can control the dream and not be lucid. Being lucid is simply knowing you are dreaming. Dream control in lucids can sometimes take practice, and sometimes trying a few different techniques to see which things work best for you. We're all different in how our minds work, so when it comes to dreaming, always go with your own instincts and what works for you first.

May I ask, do you keep a dream journal right now? If you want, you can start a dream journal in the subforum here. It's really helpful to keep a dream journal because you'll have better recall, and it'll help you with a lot of your goals like understanding yourself better, getting lucid, ect.

and the only way i can think of someone dying of fright is if you had a heart attack but that is unlikely if you know that nothing happening during SP can hurt you. :P

The answer to this question depends entirely the beliefs of the person you are asking. Since I am answering your question, I would say "Yes", I do believe it's possible for people to have out of body experiences. While many people believe OBE's to simply be an advanced form of lucid dreaming or a WILD, I am not one of those people.

If you are asking can one learn to initiate out of body experiences...I believe so, yes. Just as one can learn to master conscious dreaming, one can learn this ability as well.

Sleep paralysis is a state your mind triggers your body to go into in which it paralyzes the muscles in your body so that you do not act out your dreams while sleeping. It's a safety mechanism. If we did not routinely enter sleep paralysis at night, think about how dangerous it would be if we had dreams about bungee jumping. :cheeky:

No. I have died countless times in my lucid dreams. I've been stabbed in the heart, impaled etc. and amazingly I'm still here to tell the story about "The living man who died many deaths" :P Don't get so caught up in Hollywood theatrical perceptions of dreaming, and especially out of body experiences.

Remember, your emotions and your thoughts within sleep paralysis will dictate your experience. Keep them cool and you'll have a pleasant experience. If you are stricken with fear while in SP or a lucid dream...then visual, auditory, or kinesthetic manifestations may occur at a level in direct proportion to your emotions/thoughts that triggered it/them in the first place. Well, how long it take varies. That's that obligatory 1st answer that that question. If you want to talk with someone who has frequent WILDs, that would be Walms. This is where meditation would come in handy for you. The tutorial I linked above goes into a little bit of detail about it, but there are probably whole websites that are focused just on meditation.

Jeff has answered your 3rd question very well. He's very well versed with those subjects.

Don't worry, it's perfectly safe. As for pain, on the off-chance you feel it, just make yourself totally invincible.

In regards to the swine flu, don't worry about it. It's the flu! It goes around every year! This just happens to be a slightly different, still non-dangerous strain (provided you don't have some sort of chronic health problem or heart condition). As long as you have a semi-decent immune system, you'll be fine.

That's a cool idea. I have tried something similar a few times: I count to 500 or some such number, and try to stay conscious the whole time. So far I just have lost focus at ~300 and then fallen asleep some time later.

Well, pretty much everyone has answered your questions, but I'll put my spin on things.

First: KEEP A DREAM JOURNAL!!! This is one of the most helpful tools that you can come across, because it can help you identify dream signs (things that will tell you "I'm dreaming!"), increase your recall of dreams, and, I think, even the quality of dreams.

As for techniques, I think that WILDing would be a good thing to start to learn now. I wish I would have started earlier with WILD's...then I might actually be good by now :P. There are also a number of other techniques available, including MILD, HILD, and a whole ton of others. It sounds like you have been "using" DILD (or Dream Induced Lucid Dreams) for your first few LD's. These are common for people who first start learning about LDing, but (from my own experience) these will fade in time, and you will have to learn some of the other techniques in order to have regular/reliable lucid dreams.

Now, if I were you, I would not worry about OCD or ADHD, unless your ADHD proves to get in the way of learning to LD (which it sounds like that's not a problem for you :)). There should be no ill effects from you learning to LD. Unless you have intense schizophrenia, LDing should be perfectly safe for you.

As to your last questions, I'd have to say that Jeff777 got it right on the money. Death by fright is EXTREMELY unlikely, not only in the real world, but in the dream world as well. Just think of how many terrifying nightmares you have had, and realize: none of those have harmed you. In fact I think that the chances for death by fright is significantly less unlikely in an LD, because you can change what happens: you are the master of your dreams! Jeff also is right when it comes to OBE's: it depends on the beliefs of the individual. (For more information, check out the "Beyond Dreaming" Section of the site.
