      Help with WILD

Hi guys, I've been excited lately to start "purposely" having lucid dreams. I've had 6 or 7 that I can remember a long time ago, and one recently that got me interested.

I've started by reading different WILD guides, and about 15 minutes ago I gave up on my third try (once at 4:30, once at 8:30, one yesterday morning). I'm following the guides as closely as I can.. I feel the sleep paralysis mostly in my hands and arms, but whenever I give up after about 45 minutes and started to move I realize it's in my legs too. So I know I'm at least getting that far.

Now, I try to keep my thoughts as limited as possible. Anything I hear outside or start to think of I just let it pass and focus on breathing. I see HI, but I ignore it like I'm "supposed to". Sometimes I feel a slight vibration motion (but it's really slow, like 2-3HZ) but that's it. I just lay there for a while and nothing happens.

One of the problems I'm having is suddenly I'll get the urge to swallow. At first I would allow myself to swallow because it didn't affect my SP. Then I started thinking maybe I should ignore it, but the urge becomes unbelievably strong. There's nothing to swallow (my mouth is pretty dry because I'm breathing with my mouth open), but eventually I just can't help it anymore. It's really distracting, and I'm wondering if this is natural or if I should try changing positions?

      Thanks for the help

      Hi,

My first suggestion in matter of swallowing is that you could try to do it by turning to side. Then the mouth liquid wont gather into throat.

Secondly, aren't you over trying yourself to go lucid? Rather than concentrating 100% to breathing and stuff like that try to imagine something. You could print out some nice picture you like and put it somewhere you can see while practicing. By being too aware you can't obtain visual imagery from subconscious to affect your conscious, thus all you get is SP from not moving body.

Hope my post helped, I am not pro on LD
Do not waste 36% of your lifetime in black hole - go lucid!

Thanks leonhardrhine, I'll give it a try. I think you're right about me being too focused on my breathing.

First off, I'll tell you the best times to attempt a WILD (especially if you are a WILDing rookie). For a WBTB (wake back to bed), try setting an alarm and wake yourself up after about 6 hours of sleep. Stay up for a few minutes (usually 10 or 15) then lay back down and attempt to WILD. Another great time, is during naps. I like to WILD during naps 1-5 hours after waking in the morning. It is possible to WILD before sleep at night, but it is much, much harder to get good results.

I like to not focus on anything. Just allow yourself to breath naturally. You don't really have to focus on it. As HI goes, I don't really ignore it, but I don't focus on it either. I like to just sit back and let it naturally pass through my mind. The vibrations are good and it means you are getting close. Just stay as calm and relaxed as possible at this point. Often times the dream scene will form itself. I like to passively watch HI as I let my mind wonder. As the HI gradually becomes clearer, I try to immerse myself within it. If you lay in SP for a long time and nothing seems to be happening, try to imagine a dream scene around you. Once get the full scene around you, stand up and you are ready to explore the dream.

One of the problems I'm having is suddenly I'll get the urge to swallow. At first I would allow myself to swallow because it didn't affect my SP. The key to the swallowing is to not pay attention to it. It is ok to swallowing as long as it isn't breaking your SP. I suggest going ahead and swallowing when you need to, just don't think too mych about it. If you still have a problem with it, you can try laying on your side.

      Thanks for the help
Hope that helped a bit. Good Luck to you!

Maybe I can give you a different suggestion for the swallowing part. This is from yoga relaxation.

When you lie down to relax, once you've gone through the relaxation exercises and immobilized your body, then the last thing you do is to swallow once, and then place the tip of your tongue against your upper front teeth, or rolled up against the roof of your mouth, whichever is most comfortable. Leave your mouth closed, but without clamping the teeth against each other: the jaw is relaxed and the lips are closed.

Once the tongue is in this position, no more saliva accumulates and you don't need to swallow.

In what position do you normally sleep? Do you WILD in the same position? You could try doing it on your side so you don't have the pressure on your throat that makes you want to swallow.

You really shouldn't be lying there for too long. If you find yourself stuck for 30 or 45 minutes, you should adjust your WBTB time or let yourself drift a little more towards sleep.

Thanks atlantic, that really helped. I had been breathing with my mouth open because I have a stuffy nose, and once I started breathing only though my nose I stopped swallowing!

Unfortunately, I layed there for about 30 minutes before giving up because it seemed like I was getting nowhere, I guess I'm just impatient. I had my mind totally clear, I saw more HI than usual but like KingYoshi said I ignored it. I eventually tried imagining sounds, feelings, visual things.. and nothing really happened.

I'll try again this morning after 5-7 hours of sleep. In fact... I don't really have to be up 'till around 11, and I really want to get this--I'll probably try all morning lol

Robot_butler, the only position I don't sleep in would be on my side, maybe I'll give it a try on the couch.

Thanks for the help so far, I think I'm getting close! It's such a weird experience to actually feel yourself falling asleep and know what's happening..I used to think it was impossible to actually know when you're starting to sleep.
