Inception and its influx of newbs

As we all know, Inception is that very thing - a well-advertised, big budget thriller that deals primarily with our little community's subject of lucid dreaming. This is likely going to lead to a great influx of people who think "Oh man, I wanna do that", look it up on Google, and find us.

This is a major concern for we are not equipped to handle such an influx. We will be overrun with people all asking the same questions. Preparations must be quickly set up in the form of stickied threads and redirects to stop the potential stupidity, and especially a thread about Inception itself and whether the things in it are possible and how they compare to what lucid dreaming actually is.

As a regular member I have not the ability to set these things up, but I can at least set a call to action. This must be done, or the dykes of sanity will be overrun, and we will all be lost. The movie is already out, so time is limited. We must move quickly.

The staff are aware of the possible influx (I already see it in the newbie section) and we're equipping ourselves to handle it.

this happened with Waking Life and Vanilla Sky as well. just not in these numbers. record breaking but nothing extraordinary.

we've had this problem all throughout the history of Dreamviews

(there are already more than one of these)

hardly! there will be little to no change. only numbers will change. we might hire a couple more staff or janitors to clean up the mess, but we certainly won't be over run.
      this isn't a unique situation

Bearing in mind that Vanilla Sky was only tangentially related and nobody watched Waking Life...

But yeah, DV is a very big forum already. A sticky about inception should keep things clean enough (and new threads can be linked to it). Other then that it'll be nothing more than we're used to.

To be honest I don't see how a community like ours can see an influx of new members as anything other than a good thing. Certainly we shouldn't prematurely be thinking of them as a mass of idiots.

Both those movies came out a couple of years before the DV forums were created...

I ran into a guy last night I've never met before, and as we were making conversation he asked if I'd seen the movie. He told me he looked up lucid dreaming immediately after seeing it himself. I told him about our forum here. Anyways, turns out he's a neuroscience major, with a minor in molecular biology. So no, the influx of "newbs" is not going to be composed entirely of idiots. We were all newbies too, and our fine group is composed of many different personality colours, and from the legally retarded to the geniuses among us. If anyone is worried about the same questions being asked over and over again, please feel free to help our newer members. Point them in the right direction.

It's a good movie. If you're worried about how accurately it portrays the state of lucidity, don't be. I think it's pretty unreasonable to expect all of the shared dreaming rules from the movie to map perfectly onto the lucid dreaming "rules" that we've constructed as a community. It's not a documentary, it's a story, and it definitely succeeds in entertaining.

No, it's not the accuracy I'm concerned about. I don't expect much more than entertainment. But I do feel passionate about the subject, obviously, and the hype it seems to be stirring.. I mean, there are already big movie posters all over the city here in germany and we're usually quite a bit behind the US when it comes to cinema... and it is still a niche.. it makes me feel uneasy. I really dislike unsubstantial hypes.. I usually try to stay away from them and don't want this movie to ruin anything. I'm surprised and even a little appalled at the level of advertisement and attention at this point. Kind of a turn off for me. This will be the first movie I go to the theatre for in three years, too.

But if it does turn more people on to lucid dreaming, it's awesome. A few friends have found out about the art of dreaming and became genuinly interested on their own (although I never miss a chance talking about it) and I love that fact! So, yeah, I think I'll go see it and just leave my critical side at the door, I recently have been wrongfully worried, too, so why not this time.

      Edit:
It's also only fair to say that it was Waking Life and a thread by ExoByte on imdb that got me here

I agree. My idea is to create a stickied post, both on the front page in bold text and in the forum that says something along the lines of, "have you come here because of Inception? Read this."
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

I support the proposition in this post which I am quoting. [Off Topic]Also, Puffin, why do you change your avatar so often?[/Off Topic]

I do think that Inception may bring in an influx of stupid n00bs (although this may just be the contempt I feel for the stereotypical movie-goer talking), but I mean this in that they won't be too knowing of forum etiquette. I'm kind of a snobby twat, and I find a lack of forum etiquette irksome to no end, to be frank.
Nonetheless, I think that most (ok, fine, some) will pick up on the unspoken "Use Search Before Posting a New Thread," "Use Proper Spelling and Grammar As Best You Can," and "Flame Wars Are For Douche-Bags" rules.
Of course, there will be some that won't conform to the holy texts of Forum Etiquette. Those heretics should be slaughtered and their blood consumed by the Lord Satan I don't know what to do about them.

Where was I going with all this? Oh, right, forum etiquette rules should be stickied or something.
I don't usually think, therefore I mostly am not.

That's the big problem I see, is the film's deviation from the way dreams actually work.

All in all, I have faith that the staff can handle any potential issues that may arise with ease.

It'll be fine, just fine. Although I do wonder what the day will be like when lucid dreaming goes mainstream. It's gotta happen eventually, a ludicrously awesome skill like this can't remain in obscurity forever.

Shouldn't be a big problem. Sadly, most people give up and leave after a week anyway.

I don't think inceptions misrepresentation of how dreams works will be a problems, our tutorials are correct.

Even though I haven't seen Inception I have to ask how it could possibly be incorrectly portraying "how dreams work" since it's different for everyone, especially for lucid dreams.

I like the idea of making a thread specifically designed to flag down new members from Inception, but that's not going to fix our current problem of new members asking questions that could easily be answered by them simply looking up the DV Dictionary. What we should do is add a link above the board itself, or even a dedicated board just for this one topic that simply asks if they're new to the board, and guides them through everything they need to do to be a successful lucid dreamer and member of the community: read through all the "Menu" articles on the DV home page, go through the DV Dictionary and learn about the various induction methods, bring up their dream recall, and then guide them to the Introduction and General Lucid Discussion boards to get them going on being a community member.

That would educate two birds with one thread.

Inception is wrong because it is saying that all people's dreams work in the same way.
