      No Pressure

So I just came across this video advertising an event by some environmental group. Check it out:

The internet never ceases to amaze me.

I cannot fathom what was going through their heads when they thought this was a good idea.

      I lol-ed.

That is pretty demented! Was it on the internet only or is it an actual tv commercial?

Hahaha... oh my God. This just takes it to a whole new level... I mean seriously, it's so ridiculously overt it's like the environmental loonie brigade has just said 'you know what, fuck all this pretence and pussy footing around, let's just shoot all the non-vegan bastards'.

Scaring the audience into thinking that there are people who want you to die for not doing what they say looks an awful lot like terrorism.

It's an internet commercial of which they put on YouTube on an official channel and their website. They have since taken it down.

I am going to increase my emissions by 10 percent just to spite these crazies and get a good laugh.

      Uh.

I thought it was like, a comedy sketch or something when someone linked me it.

      Meh. It was funny anyways.

As a parody of crazy enviromentalists, it is funny. Like Conservapedia, part of me will always believe things like this are satire no matter what the creators say.

I could just imagine someone pushing a red button for me.
I love the environment and applaud people who make changes for the better, but at this time, it's unrational for me to believe I can make any noticeable contributions. I use 100 watt bulbs because it affects my mental health for the better. I drive a gas guzzler because I can't afford to buy a hybrid.
I do go behind and turn off lights and leaky faucets all the time though. But that's in no way 10%. And I don't drive as often as I used to.

Don't worry about carbon emissions. It's a crock and a waste of time. But worrying about energy consumption in general is a nice thing to do.

Come on. It was supposed to be edgy. Do you take everything as literal as you
see in commercials or promotional videos, Invader?

The thing is, no one is talking about the millions of other videos that don't have
a controversial subtext and are reasonable, but then there is one that grabs the
publics attention, albeit through means that I would have advised against, and
everybody feels confirmed about what they believe environmentalists to be.

I would be curious as to how many of these "crazy environmentalists" you actually
know. Most of the ones that produce these kinds of awareness videos are a lot
different from what you would expect I'm sure. Do the ones generalizing here
even have the slightest idea about how huge of a world wide sector this even is?

Haha. I used that phrase, but not as a term against enviornmentalists in general, but only aimed at the crazy ones. For sure, most aren't crazy and instead are just concerned about the environment. I can respect that. But some are totally nutso about it. When you may use the phrase religous extremists, are you trying to insinuate that most religous people are extremists? Of course not. For example, whoever funded/wrote this commercial being totally serious is taking it too far. I'm not offended, but a bit concerned as to what state of mind the producers of this puppy would have to be in to give this a go.

And yes, I am pretty aware about the environmental movement. A good friend of mine is going to college for sustainability right now and she is absolutely not crazy. I respect her for it. I am probably more well informed about the movement than the average person, actually, even though I don't consider myself a part of it. Global warming was the topic of my high school micro-thesis.

Nobody here was generalising. You're jumping to conclusions; I'm an environmentalist myself. I just don't think an advert with environmentalists blowing people up is any more acceptable than an advert for Islam in which non believers are burned at the stake.

Wow that was disturbing video. They didn't even get their point across correctly. It could have a subliminal effect in which it says its O.K to hurt those who disagree with you. That is wrong and terrible. Thank god they took it off air.

It's also a profession. Like I said, there are heaps of people that make a living off of it.
It's a huge business sector. People that have introduced themselves to me as environmentalists
are usually actually professionally active in that field. But it's diverse for sure.

I am pretty sure that the people that made the video and started the campaign do that as their main job.

And I figure that's the kind of people we were talking about..?

I personally wouldn't call myself an environmentalist, since I have not (yet?) dedicated my life
to preserving the environment, although I do try to make my own impact as little as I can.

      But I see your point.

I'm pretty sure that studying the environment is a science. I took an environmental science course, and it's a huge, relevant field. The science also shows plainly how we are destroying the environment. Denying the reality of it in favor for the status quo is more of an ideology.

I'm not sure what the heck was with that ad, and whether it was for or against action on climate change. It seems more like the ad is making you think that those who want to save the planet are nazis trying to control everyone (and there are plenty of people who actually think that). No pressure. I'm.... so confused.

I don't actively campaign but I do strive to live a green life. Our electricity comes from solar panels, I use public transport, we grow quite a bit of our own food, and we compost our non-edible waste and feed our edible waste to our chickens.

The salient point for what I was saying is that I agree with the environmental message.

That's really good. Limiting consumption of resources is something I should really do more of. The video, however, aside from being stupid and off-putting, wastes it's time. Rather than focus on general lack of waste, it emphasizes on carbon emissions. I thought that was the big thing two years ago, but people have finally started to realize that CO2 is one of the smaller things we are doing to the environment. At the very least, it is a symptom of the over-all problem, (if CO2 is a significant problem at all.)

My statement was aimed at the fact that the ad portrayed environmentalists as extremists. How exactly is this kind of propaganda supposed to support the cause? It looks more like an inside joke among militant environmentalists than a positive "pro green" message to share with the masses.

Making an ad in which children explode and blood flies onto other students doesn't paint one in a particularly positive light.

Too seriously? Is that because am taking it for what it is? This video is sending a BAD message regardless of what their original agenda was. Do you feel this to be Good Commercial? I like to hear your take on it?

No, I don't, mainly for the reason that it is counter productive. Yet I can appreciate the grim sense of humor and the completely overdrawn way they use to get across the urgency of the issue. "No Pressure" - It's funny. That they chose an elementary school in their first shot takes it even further. Furthermore, they do have a point.

And it's not a commercial. First and foremost environmentalists aren't people trying to sell you something for profit. There comes a time when you just have to face the fact that we might be in for quite some trouble, without sugar coating the harsh reality all the time. To paint a fun and pretty picture to encourage people to go green was clearly not the intention. The effectiveness of different approaches surely varies and can be discussed, but it's not like the environment sector is very homogeneous, so it only makes sense that different approaches are being tried.

Anyhow, I still think that you are taking it too seriously. It sends a subliminal message that it's ok to hurt those that disagree? To me that's overreacting. Do you think that video games corrupt the youth?

      Lighten Up.
