What sounds make your body completely shut down?

For so many people, it's the sound of nails on a chalkboard. It causes their whole body to just seize up, and their ears feel like they are going to explode. That sound has never bothered me, though. In fact, I would often be the guy to walk in the classroom and scrape his nails across the chalkboard, when everyone was least expecting it. Hehe. I hear that the squeak of a balloon is another common one.

There are two sounds that really get me, though: silverware on metal (that horrible, metallic scraping noise), and when people bite their silverware. I don't know if it's just any kind of metal, or specifically silverware, but it seems to happen the most with silverware. Drives me fuckin insane. Seriously. It makes me want to shoot myself.

Kind of sucks, because I have a great love for knives and swords, but I can never sharpen them myself...for safety reasons, of course.

      How about you guys? Anything?

I'm really quite interested in the neural basis of this, which nobody seems to know. It's very interesting in particular how these sounds are all of the same type, but small changes in timbre or frequency or whatever is very important to different individuals.

Although I don't mind nails on blackboards so much, the one thing I really can't stand is the sound of squeaking polystyrene; also the feel of the stuff. The two seem intrinsically linked. I get the same shivering feeling from dry cotton wool, and I imagine if cotton wool made a loud enough noise I'd hate that too.

Haha. Yeah, that squeak can get on my nerves, too, but it doesn't bother me too much. I'm also very interested to know what is it gives it that distinctness, to make our bodies react like that. If you ever find the answer to that, let me know.

Nails on chalkboard sometimes gets me, but rarely. As for the scraping of glass on glass, that's one thing that really bothers the crap out of me, the noise is very irritating and just wants to make me cover my ears.

Long nails scratching skin, or these holographic card things. Also, someone scratching vertically on a thick metal guitar string.

You know the certain plastic that some stuff is packed in, like chips. That sounds can really annoy me. It doesn't make me break down though. The other is magazines with really smooth pages. Sometimes if you run your fingernails down the pages, it will make a really disgusting sound. That can really destroy me.

You know when you go to erase something on a paper, only the eraser's worn out and all you do is rub the metal end against the paper? I can't stand that feeling or sound it makes

Haha my sister yells at me because apparently I always bite my fork/scrape it on my teeth when I eat and she hates the noise. I don't even realize that I do it until she says something. I think it's funny the way some noises really bother people. For me it depends on my mood I think...sometimes any noise can drive me crazy and sometimes I could care less about noises because I'm just distracted.

One sound I absolutely detest is teeth biting a popsicle or anything hard and frozen. *shivers* I can't think of any others at the moment, but I'm sure I have more.

If I focus on silverware it will send shivers up my body, or if it makes a sound moving against something it does the same thing. I don't know why, but it just does. I also don't like imagining metal scraping against your teeth like you're eating something off of it and it just gets caught there.

EDIT: Just saw Aquanina's post and it reminded me that I don't like anything cold on my teeth that is about the same coldness of a popsicle/ice cream/&c.

Also, for whatever reason, whenever somebody looks at me in the eyes it sends a shiver through me.

This is a problem for me. Not neccessarily with everyone, but there's just certain people I can literally not look directly in the eyes. There's no reason for the people who have this effect on me to have that effect on me, but for whatever reason they do. Has nothing to do with eye color either. It's just certain people... wish I could figure it out.

As for sounds, I hate the sound of a phone off the hook. Creeps me out.
And the squeaky sound that happens when you chew on ice.
And the sound of electricity. Like if there's a tv on mute or something. I swear I can feel that sound.

And this one is actually sortof a good thing, but when a song goes back and forth from right to left headphone. I like the effect it makes but sometimes it kinda feels weird.

For me, nails on a chalkboard sometimes. Even doing it myself sends shudders down my spine... the vibrations it causes. And same with a fork or knife on a plate. I can't really think of any other noises that bother me

The sound of a metal rake against a sidewalk.
A broom against a cement floor.
Rubbing a Mr. Clean eraser/sponge against pretty much anything.

:shudder: and now my teeth are tingling.

That's weird. I don't think I can look many people in the eye without having a shudder going through me.

An extra note on what I said: it happens with eye contact, not just looking at somebody's eye, just in case you perceived me as saying that.

Electric humming sounds bother me. I hear the same thing in my head when everything is absolutely silent and it drives me bonkers. I have to turn on something to drive it out of my head.
The wail of a baby, the chaotic/loud yammering/playing/fighting of children, continuously barking dogs and a certain pitch my birds whistle make me angry.

The feel of things bothers me more though. A certain fabric (not cotton or wool but some blend) I cannot stand to touch for even a second. Tags, seams, knots in clothing all drive me insane until I cut them out. The feel of silverware against my teeth bothers me. If I touch anything gross I can't help but make weird noises (an almost "clearing out my throat and hissing"" sort of noise lol) until I can grab a handwipe.

Wearing shoes without socks makes me feel sick behind my eyes and the back of my neck.

You couldn't stand to be near me or my 16 year old. We crack everything from knuckles to neck to toes

I can't stand very loud music either. My ex-hubby used to blast the radio while driving and sometimes it took everything in me not to jump out of the car.

The only time I can't look someone in the eyes is if I'm picking up strong emotions from them (anger, grief) or if I've disappointed the person. Any other time I do- even strangers.
