The Magic Eye images are specifically called autostereograms, which use a single-image to achieve the effect. The image is usually generated by computer by repeating a narrow pattern from left to right. By decoupling eye convergence from focusing operations, a viewer is able to trick the brain into seeing a 3D scene. Autostereogram - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The pairs of 2D images are simply stereograms, which use two offset images to achieve the effect. Stereoscopic imaging relies on the use of a stereoscope to present a slightly different image to each eye. The stereo pair can be viewed with the naked eye, if the images are placed side by side. Stereoscopy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basically, an autostereogram is a specific type of spectroscopy...and therefore they are not "literally exactly the same thing". The wiggle-gram of the trex someone posted, and the familiar blue/red 3D images are also types of stereograms and spectroscopy, and these are obviously not all exactly the same thing.

It's a subtle distinction I wouldn't expect everyone to be capable of making.

Especially somebody who didn't realise you view them in exactly the same way and hence the basic mechanism.

Once again, you are wrong. They are NOT viewed in exactly the same way. The stereograms are designed for cross-eyed (convergent) viewing, while the autostereograms are designed for wall-eyed (divergent) viewing. They are two entirely distinct methods, and when a stereogram is viewed with the wrong method, the depth information gets reversed and the image is not seen correctly.

lol, why have you simply resorted to talking out of your ass?

For wall-eyed stereograms, which are the most common, you simply put the left image on the left, and the right image on the right (Side-By-Side and Cross-Eyed Stereo).

Look at the first picture in this thread and tell me: which photo was taken on the left, and which on the right? Clue: look at the chair in the foreground. ;V

Look Xei...here's the bottom line...which you fail to grasp.

There are two methods of looking at these types of images.

Wall-eyed (or parallel) viewing and cross-eyed viewing. Wall-eyed images are made to be viewed by the parallel viewing method, and cross-eye images are made to be viewed with the cross-eyed method. It is clear that there is a right way and a wrong way to view each image. Autostereograms such as Magic Eye are encoded for wall-eyed viewing and designed to be read in only one way. They will produce incoherent 3D patterns when viewed cross-eyed.

If a two-image stereogram designed for wall-eyed viewing is viewed cross-eyed, all details on the Z-axis will be reversed - objects that were meant to be seen to rise above the background will appear to sink into it. However, in an autostereogram, repeated patterns generally interfere with one another, causing incoherent 3D shapes.
We can view stereo pictures in two ways. The normal method is the parallel technique, the alternate method is the cross-eyed technique. It makes a BIG difference which method you use, as they reverse the depth information of the stereo picture you are viewing. A parallel stereo picture's background will appear in front of the foreground figures if viewed using the cross-eyed method, and vice versa. If you cross eyes on a parallel picture the front objects will appear to be in the background.
Therefore...magic eye autostereograms that use the parallel viewing method do not use "literally exactly the same" technique as the above images intended for cross-eye viewing. This is simple logic and if you fail to accept it then we'll just have to agree to disagree.

I'm glad someone bumped this thread because it reminded me of something I was doing just about a half hour ago during a nap. I was somewhere in between wake and dreaming, I don't remember if I was in full SP, and I don't think I was seeing any HI...I was just watching static on the back of my eyelids, and decided to try and adjust my view as though I was looking at a magic eye image, as though there was a hidden 3d image inside the static. Well I started seeing all sorts of things hidden in there, it was pretty awesome. Then I decided to try and find a more detailed realistic 3d image like in the ones posted above so I tried the cross-eyed view thing and that worked too. It sorta made me dizzy though because I started flying into these elaborate 3d scenes and it transitioned to full fledged 3d hypnogogia. Pretty awesome. Someone else should give it a try and let me know what happens.

Keep trying, just cross your eyes slightly, not too much. When the third image appears, try to relax into it. At first it took me awhile to get it too.

And Aquanina, that sounds AWESOME. Might try it out if I can get all the circumstances to gel

As if you are trying to look "through" the image at a point behind your monitor. Once you get the right position it actually feels quite natural, not as if you are straining or crossing your eyes at all.

God I love these. I literally have a whole book filled with the kind that Ninja posted, except they make shapes and pictures inside of the images.
It's cool hehe I'll post a few when I get home.

Also, I was looking at these at school and everyone looked at me weird.. Haha

Actually I've done a similar thing with my eyes open, just staring at the same spot.
Got really trippy hallucinations. At one point I even had a theory that psychedelics force you in to that perspective of vision, plus something else regarding serotonin, which causes you to hallucinate. But those thing that you see, are there all the time in the area you don't usually focus on.

Obviously I can't do these 3d things properly though, but I just focused sort of not on the object I was staring at.

It seems to work for me when I gently push the outer sides of my eyes with my fingers, which kind of manually crosses them.

I'd like a more blatant in-your-face example though, so I can tell better.

OOOOOHHHH now I've finally figured it out! I just crossed my eyes, kind of looking past my nose a great deal, and the third pic in the middle was blurry, but I kept softly focusing on it until it got clearer, and the effect is so perfect!! WAY better than what I was attempting before.

Yeah, that sounds like how I did it. I cross my eyes until a third, center picture is seen, then I adjust my eyes until all I see is the center one (the other two are still there, but it's like they're in my peripheral vision). It's really easy for me to do now-a-days. I used to never be able to see those things lol

It helps a lot if you start by holding a finger up in front of your face and focus both eyes on the tip of it, then move it away from your face and toward the image. When you've just about touched the image your eyes will be almost perfectly aimed, and it just takes a little more adjustment then. Sometimes there will be a dot printed over the center of each picture and you can use those - get the two dots to converge and then just look down at the picture. Then once you've got it you can hold your hands up like blinders to block out the extra images.

Some people can do the cross-eye viewing easily (I can) and some find it difficult but can do the other kind more easily where you go wall-eyed. I can't do that at all. It hurts to even try it. But I can quickly zone in a cross-eye video and watch it for a long time. (Not sure how long - they tend to be short films.. )

Here's a stopmotion video shot by a friend of mine named Ron Cole in 3D:

For the King of Titans - harryhausen90 - YouTube

I didn't embed it because you need to set it up on YouTube to make it work - they recently changed their 3D settings and any vids that were already posted are screwed up unless you go in and make a couple of simple changes. Here's what you need to do:

Click on 3D under the video, then on Change Viewing Method and select Side by Side from the options. Click Half Width and also Swap Left/Right. You only have to swap left and right views to see it with your eyes crossed - if you would rather use the Parallel View option (wall-eyed) then don't swap them.

Here's another one, done by Nick Hilligoss: Walking the Walk
