      Pressures of highschool soccer

I play highschool soccer and I'm debating whether or not I should continue. I'm not good with pressure, and lately the pressure of soccer has been really unhealthy for me. I know it's messing me up, because I have an irregular heartbeat all the time in the day whenever I think of the upcoming period.

In soccer we have really really tough workouts. We do really hard weight regimens, tires, running. The coach puts everything into competition, and so all groups need you to win. If you don't perform it pisses them off.

The worst part of this is my irregular, stresed out heartbeat throughout the day. When I know its going to be a hard day, every time that I think of it during the day, my heartbeat speeds up and goes into nervous mode. I might think about it maybe 30-45 on or off minutes a day. It feels really unhealthy. It adds up to a lot of time. A lot of unnatural beating. Beating that isn't relaxed.

Now I'm debating what I should do. I can quit, but I want to put varsity soccer on my resume, I'm debating how important that is. There is some peer pressure to not bail out on soccer too, I don't think it would affect me too badly.

Overcome my mental stress. This would be hard but possible. I can't help but think how hard it's going to be.

Get into really good shape so the workouts will be less demanding.

I'm just trying to figure out what to do. I really would not like to carry on having a nervous heartbeat all day.

well, the decision is ultimately up to you and how you feel about this or how dedicated you are.

I'd say talk to the coach. Ask him to lower the workout a bit or make it less competitive and tell him how it makes you feel. Tell him how it makes you want to quit soccer. Don't push yourself to. If you're tired, then sit down and come back in 5 minutes. There isn't really much you can do with this except talking with him or sucking it up, or just not doing it(but that wouldn't really be fair for everyone else)

whenever i thought of swimming i always got pumped up and my heart would race to. So the only advice i can give you is to stop thinking about it. This unnnatural beating sounds weird though. Talk to someone about it. either your mom, coach, or doctor.

i won't lie. varsity sports look good on college applications, but you know you can always do another sport. Try something new, see if you're good at that or pick a sport less demanding. It sounds like this isn't your first year playing varsity soccer so the year you did play would still show up on your resume. If people give you crap about quitting, just tell them that you wanted to try something new

If you're up to do the hard workouts, then go for it, but if this irregular hardbeat becomes too much of a problem or too bothersome, then don't do it. Health risks are not worth having sports on your resume.

      hey sephiroth,

it sounds as if your in one of those trapped situations, there is no way out that won't do some sort of damage, such as you quitting or keeping the stress,

my advice, maybe do some outside personal training so that your soccer training doesn't take so much of a toll on your body,

about the stress and heartbeat, i can symnpathise exactly and it doesnt feel great, all i can think of is when that happens think of anything positive to do with soccer, try and flip the situation, that works for me when work stresses me out

hang in there buddy, take it easy ey
      n00bs i love you

Well, I know how that goes, having done a sport in high school. What year are you going to be? Honestly, if you're not enjoying it I wouldn't put up with it. High school is so much fun and it really should be enjoyed! Also, I'd tell someone about your heart beat being unnormal because you shouldn't have to do something if your health suffers.

If your parents aren't aware of how you're feeling you might want to let them know (this is just the mom in me talking).

Have you been to a doctor about your heart? If not, I would definately recommend you do so as a doctor could advise you either to quit or how to proceed safely.

      Please take care..

I am not anti-school spirit, but I am anti-school sports. I do not like having to use my time to practice after school having to meet a standard in a workout. I recommend that you play with friends like I do and exercise on your own to where you can do it. There are three main principals of exercising and body composition. The one that applies to this one is the Principal of Progression. You do a little more over time. Don't try to go leaps and bounds. When your health is concerned it isn't a good idea to do activities and workouts that stress you physically.

I told my parents I was having anxiety and my dad said not take it so seriously. I don't think thats the case though. It's like I have to take seriously because I know whats ahead of me. It's not like I'm getting excited about it or into it.

Thanks for your comments, I've been thinking about it, I still don't know what my answer is. The year is almost over and so thats my first year down, but there is still next year. No I don't play varsity yet nightowl, but I'm assuming that I will eventually.

So far the best option is looking like, do a lot of running in my free time this summer, and get my heart into really good shape. I really do like to play soccer, even though these workouts are really bad.

We had to a run a timed 800, an event I don't particularly enjoy. It's just short enough to be moderatly grueling the entire way. I could definetly feel my heartbeat running. I don't know if I should see a doctor because it's not an irregular heartbeat really it's just a nervous heartbeat. Fight or flight signal for extended time. I have thought about taking mega b stress which is taken for anxiety attacks. I wonder how possible it is for nutrition to play a role.

      1) GO TO A DOCTOR they wont think your wasting their time , they are also trained to talk to people and help them out. You want to check your heart out or general health .

      2) Your dads right dont take it to seriouly your friends arnt going to hate you if you mess up thel just be pissed off for abit

      3) Think of the rewards - The feeluing you get if you succed will be greater than the negative feeling , its also good to show you can work in a team and its girls like that kinda thoing too.

4)Fake an injury an take a break for abit to see which you pregfer.... however i would not realy recomend this just as a last resort.

hey guys, thanks for all the advice, I have just recently quit soccer, and I am now starting cross country, a sport which I think I will find much less straining, with more "self motivation." I think I'm going to find this sport much better for myself. I'm glad I finally quit, it's a major relief, and all of the major "crap" from my friends is all over.

      Just wanted to update yall.

Although I'm late, I'm glad that you got your problem resolved. I know how important high school choices are and I think you made the best of your given situation. I wish you luck in your new sport.
