      Shaw vs Telus

So currently, Shaw provides us with a bundle (TV, internet, phone) for $110 a month. Telus is offering us a bundle for $56 per month for the first three months and then $96 monthly from there on out with a couple promotional bonuses like a few free channels and a laptop (free or a low monthly fee, can't remember what the guy said). That sounds good but I'm not sure if we'll be losing out on anything.

Also, does anyone here know which interwebz r bettor; Telus Optik or Shaw Highspeed?

      Telus Optik
      - Included Home Wi-fi
      - Up to 15Mbps download speed
      - Up to 1.0Mbps upload speed
      - Usage 250GB/month
      - EasyPC | High Speed | Internet | TELUS (this dinky little thing puts my 1GB RAM desktop to shame)

      Shaw High Speed
      - Up to 7.5 Mbps download speed
      - Up to 512 Kbps upload speed
      - 125 GB monthly transfer limit

That seems pretty good (although the 250GB/month makes me kinda wary [will it even matter?]) but the downside is with Telus Optik TV, my internet speed would slow down if someone's watching the tv. I don't really have to worry about that since my Mom doesn't watch TV and my Dad doesn't come home from work until night but the people living in our basement suite might pose a bit of a problem. I don't know how much it will slow down but from what I've read on a couple sites, it's usually between 3-5mbps.

The price difference is the real clincher, if there isn't too much of a difference internet-wise then it's all good. The problem is that I don't know jackshit about these things so some help would be appreciated. Also, there might be contracts involved when it comes to Telus though so I'm not too sure if I want to get tangled up in that.

I struggle with bad internet but in my opinion, if you can afford the fast one and download like crazy, get it. but if you mostly only use the web, (with the slow one you can definitely stream and download pretty fast too) so idk.

P.S. you should get a T1 line, that'd be cool!

Telus Optik one is obviously better in every way.
But as coolbert said, it depends on what you're using it for.
You might not even need the faster speed.

I'm incredibly surprised how much internet costs in Canada.

Also, look up which company has a center (that's not the word but I forgot the exact term) - data exchange point or something like that - closest to you.

Because if the Telus Optik thing is much further away than the other companies ones, your speed could still be slower, so you'd be paying more for no reason.

There's a Telus building a few minutes from my place. The only thing that makes me wary about switching to Telus is the 5-15mbps, I'm worried about the speed fluctuating too much or being stuck with horrendously slow interwebz whenever our basement suite tenants watch tv. I mainly use the web to browse forums, stream videos, and stream music. Every once in a while I'll do some gaming.

Take Telus, they are great, and from experience their customer service is good, we have them for phone (obvviously) and internet. the internet has been amazing since we upgraded.

i dont think its based on the TV, i just think its based on how busy the internet is, bouts of slowness while painful, are usually very short.

Isn't this a tech-talk-advise thread rather then lounge?

Usually that would be the case but if you're on Optik Highspeed internet and Optik TV, the TV affects the internet slightly.

      My bad. D:

      EDIT: Fuck fuck fuck

I just looked up the number online and some people are saying it's not actually Telus, that it's a scam. Some people are saying that is so I hope it is but if it's a scam then I'm fucked. Hard. In the ass. Without lube. I ended up giving them our account number for Shaw and some personal info. Fuck... A major beating is what I'll receive if this turns out to be a scam.

EDIT 2: Just called Telus from the number they have posted on their site and Carlos (I swear there's a company representative named Carlos everywhere I call ._.) assured me that the number was legit. That's enough excitement for one day, I'm gonna go take nap now.

s'all good in da hood yallzzzzz, s'all good

Yeah, Optik is Telus, kinda pointless seeing as there is also a "Telus TV"
