Agreed, I don't get it. I thought that it's something people do for attention, when they're desperate. No-offense.

In some cases, in other cases it is something people do as a result of mental illness namely depression.

A lot of people think that, Finlander. And sometimes, that is the main reason someone does it.
About 2 years ago or so, my oldest daughter (then about 14 years old) starting cutting herself in very obvious places. I called her emo and she accused me of not understanding. Oh really? That's when I decided to come out of the cutters closet with my kids. About my past anyhow.
I went some 8 years without cutting and I learned some tools- like wearing a rubberband around your wrist and using that instead. I told my kids about that and other things (like exercise) and in private, I asked my daughter if she was looking for attention ("it's cool") or a savior ("my life sucks so much but I don't know how to ask for help").
For her, it was a combination of both those things but she eventually took to the habit completely
      Both of my daughters did.

I'm 37 years old Dianeva. I seldom scarred in my teens as well. The suckiest thing is that some of those ancient scars are now visible. My upper left arm is worse. But I realize that I'm the only who really sees them (when I don't live in a long-sleeved shirt that is). I know they're there. They're very faint, but I look like a zebra. I've lost count of all my scars.

Even though I don't want to advertise my scars (mostly for the comfort of others), I still wear them with pride. Cutting has saved my life. As awful as that sounds, I'm so ill equipped to deal with emotional stress that I would have killed myself a long time ago if it wasn't for the relief of self-injury. The scars show all the "battles" I've overcome. And it's my goal to be able to face further challenges without hurting myself, but if I fail to, I'm still alive.
I get majorly ticked off when people say self-injury is a form of suicide ideation.

Sometimes life gets bad. Real bad. After enough time goes by constantly feeling the pain of life, some people start shutting down some of their emotional vulnerability to avoid feeling the pain. It's natural, emotional pain sucks. But shutting out emotions (both bad and good) doesn't make the pain go away, it just makes a person numb, ineffective, closed-off, and distant. In an effort to start feeling less numb, many will turn to pain (cutting) as a source of emotional stimuli, one of the few sensations that seem to breach the wall that surrounds the person's core.

Once the walls go up, it's hard to tear them down. Only pain gets through. After a time...the pain feels good, familiar, easy to understand.

I have taken down my walls, for the most part. My pain is a part of me, part of what makes me who I am. It's the pain that brought me so low that also allowed me to get such joy out of simple pleasures, and I no longer feel alone or void when life deals me some bad cards. I have genuine happiness in my life, and reasons to smile every day. My pain is always there, and new pain replaces old, but it no longer controls me or defines my actions.
