Random mysteries of the day

This is a thread for people to post the little perplexing things that they find in their daily lives that make them stop and think. Whether they are philosophical or just plain derp, they are welcome here. Massive amounts of image spam, of course, belong in SB. :P

The two things that confuse me today: My reactions to varying amounts of sleep, and my phone battery.

Spoiler for Long-winded explanation:

First the sleep. I know that my ideal amount of sleep is 8-9 hours a night, but I react very differently if I get less than that. Handy breakdown:

>10: Kinda sluggish for a few hours. There is in fact such a thing as too much sleep, I guess. :(
8-9: Morning tiredness I can shrug off within the hour.
6-8: My morning kinda sucks, but by afternoon I'm okay.
4-6: Here it gets weird. Either I'm just dragging a bit well into the afternoon, or I'm REALLY tired but I shrug it off by 1 or 2. No rhyme or reason.
2-4: And THIS is where I was today. I'm generally massively tired at this point, BUT -- like what happened today -- sometimes I'm strangely extra hyper and it cancels out the tired. Then I'm fine for most of the day. It's only now at 8:30 PM that I'm starting to crash. I don't understand my own brain sometimes. :?

The other mystery of the day is my phone battery indicator. It's the type that has 0-5 bars filled in, which in theory are evenly spaced. In practice, it seems more like this:

5 bars: >20% battery
4 bars: 15-19%
3 bars: 10-14%
2 bars: 8-9%
1 bar: 6-7%
0 bars (OMG FEED ME): <5%

Seriously. I can go several days without charging my phone or seeing the indicator change. But once it dips to 4 or 3, I know I have about 8 hours to charge it. I tested this morning, and 5 minutes of charging got it from 0 to 3 bars. 10 minutes of use brought it back to 0. Why even have those levels there?

...sadly, I fail at humor, especially on 2 hours of sleep. Hopefully you guys can cover for me here. :P

I used to be pretty hysterical when I don't have enough sleep for a couple of days. Probably around 3 - 4 hours range of sleep per day. But I'm able to handle it better now after experiencing it so many times. I don't get all crazy and hyper like I used to. My mind can function although I'm freaking tired. And I tend to knock on things easier when I am tired. :shock:

The only time I really get crazy is when I go one night without sleeping at all. Then again it's rare for me to go several days with little sleep, so maybe it would have the same effect. All I know is that after maybe 30 hours of no sleep, if I'm laying down I start to experience some weird stuff... it's the only time I experience hypnagogic imagery at all.

Anyway, today's mystery involves the dog I'm watching for the weekend. She's very playful and friendly, though she tends to whine for attention. Several times now, she's rolled onto her back waiting for a tummy rub or scratches. And inevitably, after I do that for several seconds, she sneezes. I seriously do not understand it, but she can't mind that much if she keeps asking for tummy rubs. xD

Could be something to do with a vagus nerve. It may run down along the stomach, not sure about in dogs. In humans it does, and some people when you touch a certain place they sneeze.

I have lots of these thoughts, so I'll be posting here shortly no doubt.

I get scolded by my mum for the smallest mistakes I made and she said I don't have common sense.

Finally realised today she has been expecting me to think like her all this while. I guess it applies to many people who are in a close relationship with another person, you always expect someone else to think like you and when they don't, instead of nicely explaining it again you burst out and started blaming why they don't understand you, especially so for people who had known you for a long time. But the issue is they are never you, they'll never know what exactly you want.

Learn to communicate, then to expect.

Ok, so I was driving yesterday and I realised.... it's extremely obvious, but you just don't think about it most of the time....
Those white lines are completely imaginary boundaries that we have created, and somehow we feel pretty much completely safe if we're following the rules that whatever markings and symbols are on them indicate.

Also, we literally put our trust in every single person going in the opposite direction to not just swerve straight in to us because they're insane or depressed etc.
Pretty amazing.

I don't trust those people very much. They scare me, in their metal boxes driving towards me at 60 miles per hour.

Also, what if you start choking while driving alone on the highway at 70MPH? (Say you're chewing gum or eating something, perhaps a piece of candy.) There's no way to safely "chair" yourself without some serious swerving... and there's no one there to perform the Heimlich...

I think I'll just stick to taking public transports after reading the two posts on top. :|

I was thinking about how dinosaurs weren't actually that big. When you think about, we're just tiny. Seriously.
Like we're too small for this world. Dinosaurs were actually much more in proportion to the rest of the world.
I thought of this while looking up at trees, for example. Then because most animals got smaller, we get ridiculous things like giraffes.

I had some other thing that my brain led on to after this, but I can't remember it right now.

I think this is actually pretty common in anything with a battery indicator...it's never really accurate. My phone's battery will drain faster and faster as it goes down, but then stay at 1% for hours. My iPod will stay at like 99% for a couple hours, then go down quickly to 'low battery' and stay there for a while. :| Technology, man.

I don't drive but I always think about this when I'm walking across the street in front of a car. You're putting a lot of trust into the people stopped for you to not just roll forward a couple feet and crush you.

Alright, I got another mystery of the day for you guys: What the hell is up with my internet?

I got Comcast on Tuesday, and so far it's been mostly good... but randomly when I'm web browsing, it will just refuse to load a page. Instead, it tries to redirect me to some "selfinstall4.comcast.com" site. Occasionally, it will succeed, and tell me I have to finish self-installation... before breaking on the next page. More commonly, it tells me that I'm forbidden from accessing the page that it tried to redirect me to!

According to the internet, that generally means that my modem isn't "provisioned" correctly for their security needs, so I can't properly access the internet. Two issues with this theory. First, I didn't self-install this, I had some guys come in and do it. Granted, they didn't seem entirely competent, but they did have it working when I left. Second, I can access any site I want 95% of the time! So whatever "security" measure this is fails horribly! I clearly have full access to the internet, so they must have my modem on file, but that page randomly pops up, suggesting they don't... I reset my modem and router, and if that doesn't fix it, I'll have to call them and yell at them.

About internet, all of a sudden I was unable to load a site I was able to all these while. So I use Ultra Surf (probably a proxy or DNS changing software I can't remember the term) and ta-da, I can access the site again. I closed the program and I'm able to access the site that was unable to load just moments ago. I think I've flushed out something. :D
