      Pandora

Anyone have any tips on using pandora?? All my friends say if you "thumbs up" songs you like and "thumbs down" the bad ones it will eventually play stuff you like.

I have so many people telling me that it discovered songs and artists they love that they haven't heard about but I've been honest with it and it is still giving me complete crap after months....

Its constantly playing "pop" songs for me like Justin Beiber and such which couldn't be farther from my music tastes...

I'm not opposed to downloading illegal music =O I'm just way too lazy...

If anyone has helpful tips please respond!!

I haven't gotten justin bieber once so I don't know what you're doing wrong. But I can't see justin bieber coming up in Aesop Rock or Modest Mouse radio

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

The best tip I have for using Pandora is using Last.fm instead. It has a larger catalogue of music and will "scrobble" right from your itunes or spotify or whatever you use and will play exactly the type of music you want. It will even add a song it doesn't have in it's catalogue if you play it in itunes or something (just make sure you get their scrobble application). I've been rocking a nice prog station and have yet to come across a bad song, there were songs I didn't like but never a bad quality or irrelevant song.

The main problem with pandora is:

you begin, and get pop/entry-level whatever artist you put in.

you teach pandora, and it gives you specific and repetitive results.

So I vote for Last.fm. Sadly, it doesn't sound like you have an appreciable music collection from which to scrobble.

So, er, how 'bout Grooveshark? Take the artists you've found from Pandora, Wiki to find the albums that most interest you, and then listen to the whole thing free, legally, and saveably on grooveshark.

      Goddamn this post is 2010's.

edit: wait. Are you remembering to switch stations?

Every time I see this topic Pandora pops into my head. Every single time.

(Also I may be old fashioned, but I'd say torrent the music you like. I mean buy. Yes, buy.)

You can just play a station from tags or an artist you know you like, no need to have a large scrobble base, though it helps.

Let pandora ride for a bit. Wait till a lesser known artist that plays a song that you enjoy. Create a new channel with that artist and nothing else. Let that channel ride for a bit. Wait till a lesser known artist plays a song on that channel plays a song you enjoy. Create a new channel with that artist. Continue to do so untill Pandora sounds like Pandora and not FM radio.

I know this may sound like a mess, but that's what it's going to take for you expand your musical plate. Okay, there's another way. Go to the "what are you currently listening to" thread and plug in some of the artists that DV members are listening to. Most of them tend to listen to lesser know better quality artist. But hey, if you end up finding out they a superstar in their own country. It's still okay, unless it's USA.

If you're still hearing radio pop crap a few days from now, I'm sure everyone will do their part in naming artists to help you on your magical journey.

I love pandora. Make sure to have lots of channels of your favorite artist or genre. You can even get stations of timelines. Like i have an 80's station. And for anyone who didn't know this, you can have comedy stations.

The thumbs up and thumbs down help pandora learn. But i really don't use that very much.
