      Ways to Make Money

A job is a good staple, but it's hardly the end of the pursuit regarding making money, in my opinion. At least for me, my goal is to eventually move beyond the need for a job, but I'm sort of in a catch-22 unless I somehow learn how to stomach eating garbage and sleeping under bridges.

So I was thinking of using my free time to figure out more ways to make money besides as an employee. I was thinking of it like Craps. In Craps, you throw down investments and hope they hit enough times to make some cash before the table craps out. This thread is meant as a brainstorm for various ways to supplement one's income which may or may not prove lucrative but serve as an investment because you never know which will hit.

So for me, I want to compile a poetry zine and CD and sell it for a couple bucks. I also want to compile a stand-up comedy routine and sell that CD at various stand-up clubs and open mics I can find. This lead me to the idea that I should start producing more music and work toward completing an album. One man, 3 types of CDs. At first none would make me any money, I'd probably give most of them away and if I sell them I'd sell them for barely anything above the price to produce them but it also allows me to do something I enjoy with 3 separate investments all simultaneously waiting the possibility of blossoming.

I was also thinking, they have a Psychic Fair in my town once a month, and practically every reader there does Tarot Cards. I want to study the I-Ching and start giving I-Ching readings. I don't actually believe there's anything paranormal taking place, but I believe in the psychological effect of giving people very vague, archetypal descriptions then simply reading them to fill in the rest. I've actually been fairly good at giving psychic readings to my friends for my ability to read them. The best part is you can blame your answers on your psychic abilities rather than your judgmental attitude.

And they also do a farmer's market on Saturdays. I was thinking that if I figured out what plants were being sold enough there I could start growing whatever was missing and reserve myself a little niche there.

I like these sorts of ideas because they allow me to think about making more money right now. Writing a novel, developing a video-game and the like are extremely ambitious projects that could take years before I see a dime, if I'm lucky enough. While I'd like to continue these projects, I'd like to do so while also focused on the near-future because I believe if my entrepreneurial skills get rewarded more often, I'll retain the creative drive needed to work on bigger projects.

So anyone got any other suggestions? Online? Offline? Share your ideas!

Learn how to count cards with a trusted friend or relative. It's not hard and if you keep a low profile you can earn quite a bit of money.

You could spend a bit of time learning to day trade stocks. It takes a bit to practice and perfect but it definitely can pay off depending on how much you invent.

Well first you can start by asking people on various forums around the Internet for ideas on ways to make money .

You just need to find a need that is not being answered , create something new that no one thought of before , even something little like cotton tips or the USB flash disk. Really the guys that invented those should have a fortune by now.

I had the farmer's market idea in mind too. Coz I wanna buy a big plot of land soon really cheap, and be self-sustaining. But still have a bit of money for things I can't build and property taxes etc.
Would probably only have to work a few weeks per year to get enough. Although I haven't done the precise math, and it would differ depending where the land is.

You could also buy stuff from China and resell it here. Some things are hugely profitable. It's usually electronics of course, but it's fairly erratic.
For example a camera my sister got was $550 in Aus, from China it was $150. Perfectly legit.

I've also got a business idea but I'm keeping it to myself. Unless you wanna invest

Apparently this doesn't work anymore. I learned how to do it and someone here told me they shuffle the cards way too much and use two sets of decks as well.
Kinda fucked IMO, they couldn't have been losing *that* much money and it provided a cool challenge. Ah well....

I've thought about this. Seems like probably one of the easiest ways. And one of the most soul crushing. However I feel like it's a good thing to divert money away from that and divert toward charities etc.

If I had to make money without a "job," I'd probably try selling shit on ebay. Probably drums, since I'm pretty knowledgeable in that field.

Ex: Find a good deal on a full drum set--hardware, cymbals, shells, pedals... then flip it and sell everything separately. So if it came with 5 cymbals, sell each separately. Sell each cymbal stand separately, sell the drums as a shell kit, etc. Though, this probably isn't an effective method at all--it's more something big drum fanatics tend to do, just so they can cycle through and try out various high end drum gear and make a bit of extra cash on the side. Plus, I'd sort of need to have my own place to even do this--drums take a lot of space, especially if I'm gonna be constantly buying/selling 'em.

Depends on where you are, in vegas they use six decks, in atlantic city they use four usually I believe. But I'm talking about smaller venues. Even if there are two decks you can still calculate your chances, you just need one or two wingmen to be constantly counting at tables so you know when to come in.

And then they throw you out coz the dealer was counting too.

It's possible I guess, but I'm not sure how much you'd make.

      Invest, my apologies.

There seems to be a rather acecpted notion that money is soul-crushing. I was just telling my dad that I trade stocks because it's a challenge, after all, money is just money. I use my money to help people and will eventually donate most of it. The only reason money is useful is because the people that have the means of getting it, can also give it. I'm fortunate enough to be capable of getting a degree that I not only enjoy, but that also pays extremely well.

There isn't any quick or easy way to get money. If you find a method that actually is, you'll end up losing it.

Stocks only seem easy because most people just buy it and let it sit there. You'll average about 8% a year if you do that, however if you can analyze stocks properly and efficiently, you can make 90%+ on your investments. It's a method called technical analysis and it isn't easy. It essentially requires you to be fluent in another language that consists of numbers, probability, intuition, and thinking. I'll link you an image of an easy chart compared to the ones my dad and I make and study.

Just play online poker! I made quite a lot of money on those tables, but make sure you know how bankroll management works, and be atleast a little bit good at 'basic' math. Once ur good enough just multi-table your way up. I wouldn't trow away your job for it though. Just remember that in the short run you may lose some money cause of bad luck, but in the long run you will always win. (If done correctly )

This is totally possible, even in Vegas where they use multiple decks. I've studied it a little bit, but haven't played in a while. The idea is learning the optimum black jack strategy, then counting cards gives you more of an edge. With good strategy and card counting, even with multiple decks, you should do better than chance and at least make some modest winnings. Casinos aren't going to notice a single person counting cards on one night unless they are really winning a lot of money. Even then, you would be able cycle through a few different casinos before you are black listed from all. By then your earnings should be significant enough anyway.

The major drawback to this is, to really learn to count cards and memorize black jack strategy takes a significant amount of commitment and dedication. You need to practice for hours a day for several months at least. I practiced for a few months, but probably only a half hour a day here and there and never got good enough to make large amounts of money before letting it fall by the wayside. That's the reason why doing this is pretty rare, most people won't have the brain power and level of dedication it really takes to accomplish this.

Although, maybe writing this reply will give me motivation to try it again...

Yeah, nobody on this website is going to make money by being card counters. They will lose the $120.43 cents they have to their name.

I think selling your creative works, whether it be writings, paintings, music is always a good idea. That is one of the ways I'm going to try and market myself over the next year or so.

I'm definitely more interested in an artistic route. As much as I'd love to rip off a casino or too, I don't see it as a very realistic option. While art won't give me the millions right away that the stock market or card counting could provide, it's also something I could find much more fulfillment in. I'm writing a novel and working on a video game, these are long-term projects that will hopefully provide the income I need to do some serious investing and get my dreams in motion. In the meantime I need a supplemental income and I want to start working on building the foundation for the lifestyle I want to lead. No major in college could provide an occupation that would give me the fulfillment I seek, so I can't escape the idea that I work a dead-end job by going back to school. Though I do intend to get a Master's, this is not a career based motivation.

Instead I need to start building my lifestyle now, directly, I know exactly the lifestyle I want to lead, now is the time to lay in the groundwork to get there, and that means starting small. Selling something at the Farmer's Market, and setting up a strong network of friends and artistic connections. Comedy doesn't pay much, poetry doesn't pay much and music rarely pays much but combined I have three things I can start producing and selling right now and the way I see it, three chips on the table are better than one.

But there are some great ideas on this thread. I created this thread for everyone, not just myself, and so even though I'm not interested in things like buying up Chinese products and selling them here or taking the ebay route, that doesn't mean others wouldn't find such ideas beneficial. Keep 'em coming!

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

I'm planning on taking the English-teaching route. The demand for English training is going up and up, it just happens to be in places that most people are less and less interested in going to, which is a win-win for me. I'm going to start off in Mexico, and I might just stay there forever if it turns out I got it right on the first try.

Yeah I'm about to finish my master's, but this is a purely curiosity-driven endeavor, and only because it's free to me for military service. Fuck a high-paying job.

Music can pay pretty well if you go and busk in the right place.
Also depending on what you play.

I've thought about this. Apparently you don't even need to know the language of the place you're teaching in. Which seems pretty cool.
I'd love to go to Japan and teach English.

Can you explain the intricacies of trading stocks in a paragraph or less?

No but seriously, do you think you could teach how to do it well?

I'm going to start off in Mexico, and I might just stay there forever if it turns out I got it right on the first try.

Yeah I'm about to finish my master's, but this is a purely curiosity-driven endeavor, and only because it's free to me for military service. Fuck a high-paying job.
I see some english or french students go to korea or japan to teach bussiness men english during summer and they earn so much money it isn't even funny.

I'd love to go to Japan and teach English.
yep, I think that's the standard assumption. I was looking at Disney China and they wanted only people who spoke Chinese, but I haven't seen anywhere else that has that expectation.

yeah, if I'm not cuttin' the mustard in Mexico I'll try somewhere I can make more money, but I'd much rather live in Mexico if I can get by alright. My needs are meager.

Not at all. My dad subscribes to this site called TradeSmartU and I learn from there. There are 4 categories of videos to learn from, and each category is like 20 hours long. The graph was just used to prove my point that analyzing stocks isn't easy. You all have what you need to invest, now go my children.

      Companies should be employee owned

Its hard to free yourself from a system using the system. You've got to really think outside the box. If for example you sell art to free yourself from the system of mindless jobs, well you haven't really freed yourself from anything. The selling of your art, for the most part, still requires employees of some kind. From the clerk who sold you art supplies, from the driver delivering the art supplies to the store, or the factory workers who made the art supplies.

I mean, movie stars would be no one without the thousands of min. wage workers at the movie theatre. etc. etc. Do they ever think about who they owe their financial freedom too?

This is a problem if you want freedom and want others to enjoy that freedom too. I dont know what the answer is. But if we look at the heart of capitalism its the dream of financial gain for the individual. For the modern day hippie who wants freedom, I think the best route is to not look for individual financial gain, but to think in terms of community. Even if its just you and your friends.
