      any longboarders here?

I used to skate when I was a lot younger, but lost interest after a while. I never got very good at it, mostly because I was a little kid I guess. Not that long ago, my friend bought a cheap longboard on Amazon, and that got me interested. After trying it out one night I decided I had to get one and give it a serious try. Long story short, I've got quite a bit in amazon gift cards, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm ordering a board tomorrow, nothing too fancy, but the best "cheap" board I could find, the atom super carver pintail. Right off the bat I might order a set of bones reds to replace the stock bearings, but aside from that it looks to be a pretty decent board for a beginner.

Anyone else here into longboarding? Any tips for a newbie?

Longboarding looks pretty stupid, you wouldn't rather just learn on a normal skateboard.

Yeah I do and have for awhile. I skate down alot of big hill where I live. But three days ago one of my bearings fell apart >_<

edit: oh yeah and tips. Be one with the concrete! If you do crazy ass shit it might be good to wear a helmet. This kid I used to skate with, I let him borrow my board to go down a steep hill and he got speed wobbles at the bottom and flipped and got road rash all over and hit his head fracturing his skull and giving him a concussion and an ambulance came and he had to be helicoptered to another city and in the hospital for days. So ya helmet can be worth it. Although I never wear one >_>
When I skate hills you either carve, or you just go all out and go straight and try to not to die from speed wobbles. And then theres all that sliding shiz, but I'm no expert on that although I can kind of do my own slide type things.

And another thing. Soft wheels are great for riding on streets, hills, chunky surfaces, but on smooth ground like at skate parks or other things it is very awkward. Soft wheels thrive and go fast on more rough ground. Hard wheels thrive on smooth ground. Pretty much any trick skate boarding or skating ramps like quarter pipes half pips bowls, ect. It's better to go with hard wheels and a deck that gives you a good sense of control rather than having some funky long board/cruizer shape. You'd be better off with a normal shaped skate board or even something shaped like this http://www.strange-house.net/images/...er80sComp1.jpg ( I used to have a deck like that but I snapped it [I've snapped several boards]) for that type of skate boarding. Although I would prefer to have a long board/cruizer with soft wheels to get around town, just because it's such a smoother ride.
But yeah just get whatever you like.....

That's cool. I'm mainly just working on learning to carve now (and learning to footbrake ). I think my trucks are still set a little too tight...and my technique probably sucks. I'm not really planning on doing any trick riding or anything, so I'm not interested in a "normal"/trick board. The wheels that came with that board are kinda soft, but I guess that's fine for now, especially since a lot of the roads around my area are a bit rough.
