Yes, its a horrible habit. I got it from my dad and have done it since I was very little.

Yes. I've done it for as long as I can remember. I try to just bite a little, though, and to leave nice edges.

I don't bite the nails themselves but I nibble on the excess skin on the sides.

nails, hangnails, sometimes all the way down to the first knuckle. Its a nervous habit i picked up as a kid and can never get rid of. When I started smoking people told me I would stop biting my nails because smoking was my new nervous habit. Turns out that wasn't true at all.

I hate hangnails, the bit which sticks out at side and it hurts when you pull it off

If you nibble them properly, it'll look like you trimmed them with clippers.

I wish I could cut the habit, but once they are longer than my preferred length, it's just so tempting.

It can be a phycological disorder, like OCD, hair eating, hair pulling, scab pull, scratching, twitches, any repetivite type movements, and phobia off all kinds. They are all anxitey related disorders though usually not that serious. Though they can be at times. They cause stress, or relieve stress, or manage stress. Pretty much everyone has some or even multiple small disorders. Especially into todays world where there is so much stress.

No. I don't even get how people do that. It must be some habit of anxiety or nervousness or something.

I used to all the time, then I started caring more about my appearance, and realized that chewed up nails look like something the killer in a horror movie would have, so I evend them out with nail clippers and now I don't chew them anymore.

I used to chew my finger nails AND my toe nails But dentures kind of cures that bad habit VERY quickly.
Now I'm almost obsessive with the nail clippers. It drives hubby bonkers but I keep my nails cut back to the skin. If I could remove my nails, I would. They drive me crazy.

BUT, my daughters are friends with a family who bite their nails to bloody nubs. I had never been that bad. I always chewed them back to the skin (as I keep them clipped), then filed them smooth with my teeth.

      Lol at this thread.

I used to bite them pretty bad, including the skin Burke mentioned. Now I only bite one if it's starting to come off partially. I get occasional manicures so that also helped me break the habit. Somewhat.

I remember once in college I was really trying to grow them out and make them look pretty, so I put a rubber band around my wrist. Every time I bit a nail, I would snap my wrist with the band. Didn't take long to work haha.

Out of curiosity... yes, I could still bite my toe nails if I was able
I'm fairly flexible. Without stretching, I can still put my ankles behind my neck (barely ).

Not bad, not bad. I am most pleased with myself
(Of course, having Ehler's Danlos Disease- Hypermobility Type, is the only reason behind my flexibility)

When I was little I would bite my nails. Then one day my mom took a nail polish brush and "painted" my nails with Tabasco, that fixed me fairly well.

Sexucationally speaking, you just made my day...I had no idea about Ehler's Danlos Disease. I'm 'double jointed' in the shoulders and fingers, but that's about it.

Hahah, too bad your mom didn't know a friend of mine. I know a guy in his thirties that still sucks his thumb. I've never bit them, and they sometimes grow out of control if I don't clip them. I've heard everything from "wow you have beautiful nails" -manicurist in a class of mine, to "when are you gonna cut your nails"- admissions counselor.
