      Say and Discuss Favorite Quotes.

I noticed there isn't a thread for people to put down their favorite quotes from historic or not so historic figures. So here it is now. Feel free to discuss the quotes other member add to the thread and please don't quote songs.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. That's a pretty powerful quote, and it makes sense...i mean, if you have nothing you think is worth fighting for, or trying for, then what do you really have to live for?
I think that doesn't necessarily have to be taken in the context of war, but maybe just in the thought of life in general.
You're only free if you're autonomous. If you live your whole life according to the dictates of others you never have anything to fight for anyhow, because you've never had the chance to experience things for yourself, and find out what these things might be.

I have one...that someone said to me last night.

To see a world in a grain of sand, and to see heaven in a wild flower.
To hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour William Blake[/b]
I thought this was beautiful, what's other people's take on it?
To me, it's about how the smallest, tiniest things can mean so much, how you can spend the littlest amount of time in someone's company, merely an hour, and yet you can feel like you've travelled through time and space.
I think it's a case of big gestures don't mean so much...it's a word, or something someone says to you that can touch your heart in it's deepest place.

The brain is wider than the sky
For put them side by side
The one the other will contain
      With ease, and you beside.

      -Emily Dickinson

A very eloquent way of reaffirming our infinite potential.

i love that quote Merck, its really meaningful, its a quote you can think about and still question its meaning without understanding it.

it reminds me of some George Orwell quotes....
"I was looking back to see if you were looking back at me to see me looking back at you".

I've often thought about that, in my gloomier times...such things as 'all the things i like, are not really so individual, so many people have done it already, what's the point?'

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.[/b]

To hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour William Blake

      This is really beautiful

To see a world in a grain of sand. (that grain of sand, not so small and insignificant as you think)

heaven in a wildflower. (everything in a wildflower is in heaven, also hollow
graphic universe. Everything is one. To see beauty in the oneness)

infinity in the palm of your hand. (you are eternal, in the "possesion'" of infinity)
eternity in an hour (Time an illusion. You ARE forever)

      irishcream i like your sig.

      Love is a powerful thing.
It leads to truth, freedom, peace, all those things we strive for.

If you have love you have life. And that is true light.
If you have ever felt it you will know why I say it is life.

If you have hate, or if you wish to take away, restrict rather than give. You have death.
that is true darkness. It is foolish.

If an enemy is in need. Give to him. Feed him if he is hungry.
And this will be to him like a dumping of hot coals all over his head.

In relation to this I'd just like to add here.
Never let darkness defeat you. Love is much better.

Darkness can't defeat you if you find love in the midst of the darkness...

I love that quote, it makes me believe that everyone and everything has real potential, as long as you believe.

That one is amazingly true, at least when it comes to me.

These are woutes Mystical Journey put up in a thread I made and i hae kept them in mind ever since

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
      Joseph Addison

From the moment I picked your book up until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend reading it.
      Groucho Marx

No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.
      Confucius

You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.
      Mohandas Gandhi

I think that the online world has actually brought books back. People are reading because they're reading the damn screen. That's more reading than people used to do.

      We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhood cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Good site to check out irishcream

There is an excellent docu out there Boof called "Timothy Learys Dead" (very interesting).

Lets not forget his good old mantra "Turn On, Tune In and Drop Out" (somtimes he says it like hes forgotten the meaning of the words but even so its good ol' Tim).
