      Antidepressant drugs dont work

If antidepressant drugs are effective, why don't they work for psychiatrists? Year after year,
psychiatrists commit suicide at a higher rate than the general population. Are we to believe that they don't take their own drugs, or that the drugs don't have the benefits attributed to them?

      LOL

psychiatrists and psychologists are reknown for being insane. that's probably what attracts them to their line of work in the first place.

one pshrink i saw sheepishly admitted to having tryed a particular AD, and said it was pretty good. i suspect he'd sampled just about everything in the prescription book. if i was a shrink i know i would.

in fact this drug was pretty good, but not because it helped depression or social anxiety (it didn't), but only because it was a MAOI and had a spectacular potentiating effect on a number of fun drugs including OTC codiene (playing with fire - not recommended)).

when it comes down to it ADs are pretty useless for most people. apparantly a few people they work for, but i've yet to meet anyone. i think placebo effect counts for alot, and so does natural recovery - i.e. people sorting their stressful life situations out thus leading to reduced anxiety, thus leading to reduced depression.

Nah, it's just their conscience catching up with them. They suddenly realize how intrinsically wrong it is to charge $100 per hour for a consultation - and then it's hello razorblades.

      OT:
Antidepressants just trigger pleasure in the brain, as does most common "street drugs" among other effects. After a while this wears off and you become desensitized to pleasure, so when you go off the pills, things that would make you happy before have littler effect, thus worsening your initial problem. Working things out always beats putting substances into your body.

Concerning the razorblades: once in a very deep conversation with a cutter, she described it as "the only pain I can control". I don't think I wil ever forget that phrase. Unfortunately, this behavior can lead to worsened behavior and more severe means of self mutilation. LOL

      $100?

far out that's cheap, my last one was nz$225/hr, and i've paid upto nz$300/hr.

i have no insurance. suffice to say, i didn't see either of them for many sessions, on the brightside i did get loads of (govt paid for) funky drugs out of them, particularily that MAOI rocked!

Woah, I just pulled the $100 figure out of the air, I had no idea they were that steep! Time for a career change methinks... just hide the razorblades.

Well using antidepressants (AD) alone won't necesarily do a whole lot. It will help some but it all depends on the individual which AD works. Research has consistently shown that drug therapy in combination with psychotherapy is more effective than just one or the other. Of course the patient has to work to get through whatever is troubling him/her. Drugs won't just fix the problem.

About the suicides among psychiatrists, I guess maybe it has to do with the fact that they spend most of their lives listening to other people problems and constantly being around people who have disorders of some type. Maybe that has to do with their state of mind.

      For the record...

      Lexopro is my friend.

Sure, it's ninety bucks a bottle; sure, it doesn't stop me from feeling suicidal overall, but it keeps my emotions down enough so I'm not potentially teetering on the edge every other week.

      They work for me.

Well, it's like every time I used to watch Romeo + Juliet, I'd end up speaking in Shakespearian verse for about an hour afterward. Of course your environment is going to effect you, especially something like that. I'd be surprised if they didn't feel quite morbid. It's a shame they commit suicide, but...

I think talking to yourself works best. And after a while, there's a bunch of "people" to talk to.
