Okay... And you ripped it off from Google. That's a scientific explanation, not the meaning that most of us are looking for.

This is probably actually closer to the answer than you think.

So if you don't reproduce, does it make you less of a living thing? If you're in a coma or in a bad accident and you lose your limbs, does it make you less of a living thing?

No, it just makes you inferior.

I'm sorry that it's a scientific explanation from Google instead of the answer you were looking for. I posted it in the lounge, not extended discussion, what do you expect? But I think it really is that simple, we're alive because we are. No deep meaning or reason, it just is.

I know, I learnt it when I was 9, it was in my science textbook, the differences between living things and non-living things. But it's hard not to think so much when we have 60,000 thoughts a day.

Perhaps there's no deep meaning to why we are alive but people are searching for meanings to know why they should be alive.

There are many theories as to the meaning of life, but I don't think that the OP wants to have a discussion about the deep question. Otherwise, he would have posted this in ED. Though if that is the case, the better place for it is senseless banter I should think.

I'm sorry to hear that. That really does suck. Well, if it makes you feel better, I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico™.

Well perhaps if he puts a little explanation on the end of his post I wouldn't have question him on what he's trying to say.

Nonetheless you can have a discussion in The Lounge.

I just don't like the definition that a living thing is classify as its "capacity for growth, reproduction, functional..." If anyone is born with defects and is unable to perform any one of the above, feels like they don't fit in the definition any more.

If someone is born with a defect that stops them from growth, reproduction and .....functional (not sure what this is, looks like the sentence is cut off).

....If they cannot grow or reproduce they are probably born as a calcified feotus. In which case, no, they are not living.

"The condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death"

I admit growth is essential for a life, however there are people who are unable to reproduce because their reproductive organs are damaged, etc. There are people born less mobile than their peers too.

      I don't see your point....

They grow, therefore they meet the definition of life.

I'm just saying reproduction and functional activity doesn't necessary mean the definition of life. Whereas the definition marks all four points as the meaning of life, I don't agree with two of the points mentioned.
