flooded out of our home, swam for our lives - we are homeless but OK

I'm sorry for not being online much these last few days but I've been recovering from hypothermia and exhaustion, losing our home, and just reflecting and thank God for our lives.

The night of January 14th, right as we were going to bed around 11 pm, we got a call from the campground office saying the river was rising and we had to evacuate. Adam told me to stay inside, and he waded up to his calves getting both our cars out. This took about 30 minutes, by that time he was up to his waist (he's 6'3"). He tried for another half an hour to save the trailer but the hitch was submerged by the time he had moved both cars upstream about 100 yards away. He was frozen by that point, he tried til he couldn't feel his hands. His feet and legs had been numb for a while. Around 1 am, he came in so frozen he could barely move or talk, just shivering. He told me to grab our little dog and my purse, shove everything I thought we needed in my purse - bank cards, his wallet, both our car keys, and I draped the purse around my neck and grabbed our Chihuahua. Adam said he would stay there because 1) he needed to rest after being frozen, wading in hip deep water and 2) someone was supposed to come help drag the trailer out, but to be safe, he wanted me and the dog out right then, in case the water picked up the trailer. Leaving him there was the worst feeling! I remember him urging me on until I couldn't hear him the the rain and the river. I was only in the water about 10-15 minutes. I used the utility post hook-ups as a guide to the way out of the campground, debris was everywhere. By the time I got out I was so frozen I could barely think, I was just going on adrenaline. We got to the car and I got blankets out of the trunk, and me and the dog curled up and were chilly but not freezing. I prayed all night for Adam to stay safe, I could see him in my minds eye. I knew he was shivering and exhausted, but that he was OK. The "help" never showed so Adam was stranded in the trailer all night. When daylight came (still raining), the water had receded about 2 feet. Adam grabbed his guitar, threw it over his shoulder, and climbed out! As soon as his feet touched ground I knew we were going to be OK, even if we lost our home.

We've been living in a motel up the road since then. Our home is a loss, but we can replace it. The Red Cross has helped us with food and clothes. We're just so thankful to be alive.

I hope everyone else is doing OK.

We lost the main computer (using laptop about 12 years old right now). Recording media, microphones, cords, acoustic pick up. I think a friend is going to let us borrow his come February so Adam can finish his album.

Also you misfortune triggered memories of my (late) mum. Back in 1976 I was safe in another part of Queensland but mum got caught in big North Queensland floods. She was alone (isolated) in a hut, miles from the nearest shop. A helicopter came and dropped food. They called out to her and she said that she was safe so long as the water don't keep rising. She knew others might be in more desperated plight and wanted the rescue helicopter to get to t.hem.

When the floods subsided we paid for her to join us in the city. Thanx to that terrible flood I got to spend the last 4 years with my lovely mum in Brisbane before she suddenly died.

Only while reading your above posts did I realise THAT! That terrible flood ensured mum and I would be together for the (wonderful) last 4 years of her life.

Thank you BlackBirdRising for sharing you deep experience with us and letting us know you are ok

I wasn't going to mention that your post to me was post 111 because I felt too lazy. So I just logged-in and "liked your reply instead. Then I noticed that when I "liked" you, BlackBirdRising, it took my like count upto 222.

I find it amazing that it took you to post about your deep experience of knowing your partner was wet and cold in the trailer, and you and you doggy were wet and worried, all through the night, for me to realise that a Queensland flood brought mum and me together for 4 wonderful years before mum went to her permanent home.

When I asked mum how should I pray she said, crying,

Please don't pray for my healing, I want to go home.

When she looked up and saw my shocked face she said, "you shouldn't have made me say that".

She later said the same thing to the paster's who visited her in hospital.

Your Avatar reminds me of my 45 year old mum who pass quickly of pancreatic cancer on 21-Jan-1981.

Hope things come good quickly for you, your partner, and your doggy.

No need to apologize for personal tragedy inducing absence.

You are recovering from your flood. I hope things are on the mend love.

      Right now

1500 trapped in Bundaberg, Queensland, including a hospital where 60 patients having to be moved to the 2nd floor. All roads closed. Only way to get folk out is by hellicopter. Main helicopters can take 83 people at a time but with 1500 in peril this is a massive job.

River will peek in 3 hours from now.

Lots of wind, rain and flooding else-where in Queesland too.

People in Bundaberg knew the flood was comming but are used to floods and didn't evacuate but this is the worst flood in living memory.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_t0...e_gdata_player

The "Show more" under the video tells how big this disaster is. I lived in Brisbane for 12 years but I never experienced a big flood. Back then the floods happened in North Queensland at Easter. NOW they come earlier and have come down to Brisbane.

Here (below) is an unhappy man who intends to change this lack of accurate flood info at the next election. This was posted 16 hours ago and things are a lot worse NOW.
