Likes Given and Likes Received

I am not sure whether this is the right place to post this. I wonder whether I am alone in this particular thinking: Whenever I look at My Profile in DV, I like to verify that the Likes Given is higher than the Likes Received. I don't give out likes unless I generally like something, but I do feel it important that I give out more of them to others than I get in return, and if I start getting lots of likes, I feel it my duty to start giving out more likes in return.

I don't think anyone would see you differently in a negative way if you ended up with a lot of Likes Received and less Likes Given. Usually the Like feature is kind of subjective for something that only takes a millisecond to click, and people use it in many ways: - To verify they read a post and/or agreed to some or most parts in it - Someone took the words out of the other person's mouth that was about to post something similar - "I'll get back to on you that" - And all sorts of reasons I don't think anyone will think that you, JoannaB, is a cold and heartless person for not liking back. It's not really a give and take system that's a matter of life or death or social status on DV. At least, that's what I think. You don't want to like too much where the person ends up realizing you're only liking or finding posts you can think you would like for the sake of giving back what you got in return. That would probably ruin their day when they thought their existence on the forum actually mattered.

I feel like the whole "like" system is kind of silly. I know it's useful for some things, but I don't think other people should be able to see how many likes a person has right underneath their name all the time. I guess that's not really on topic for this thread but I felt like saying it and I didn't want to start another thread. In answer to your question, I do sort of feel that way but I can't say that it really bothers me. I like what I like. I often don't "like" posts that I should because I just forget or get caught up in the discussion.

Here in DV we officially have the name tag and achievements as a separator between members but I guess most people will also look to the post count and amount of likes to get a weak image of how much a user is liked or respected on the forum. Personally I think it works well here on DV because there isn't an elitist attitude with long standing member, generally high likes or posts just shows that they are active users. However on other forums, especially gaming ones or forums where the average IQ lies a bit lower you will notice that people will more likely agree with a member because of his post count. I think most users who come to this site quickly realize that we don't pay to much attention to such trivial matters such as post count.

Just to let you know, the rational part of me completely agrees with all of you who say that it is silly to want to give more likes than to receive, however, I strongly suspect that I will continue to irrationally feel about this the way I do, and no I do not intend to stop posting good stuff, and I also don't want you guys not to like my posts, and I will not start liking stuff when I do not mean it, however, if my likes received ever go up more rapidly, I do intend to pay more attention and remember to not forget to like others posts which I might have forgotten to like, even though they deserved it, but the likes received shall remind me to not forget to like back. And while the like system is a bit silly, but I kind of like getting likes and I bet others do too, in which case it is not entirely silly after all.

I do think that the LIKES should be balanced with some other clickable word, or words LIKE - DISLIKE Maybe have a fully balanced system with LIKE - NEUTRAL - DISLIKE or we could just go silly ADORE - LIKE - NEUTRAL - DISLIKE - HATE This is an idea I have had since joining the forum, and starting a topic about the subject of LIKES, and what they are for.

You don't have to like something. No need to dislike things....it would just hurt forum morale. Some people already do that with thread ratings and trollish posts, just because they can. Maybe it could be done with flags...you know, more flags, more fun!

In the forum from hell that I left before coming here, we had the ability to give users positive and negative reputation anonymously with comments tied to particular posts, so if someone really wanted to spoil someone else's day anonymously, they could. You know, I'm glad we can't do that here.

However, you used the word 'anonymously' On here the likes/dislikes would be open, and people who complain, and give out excessive dislikes would just be shown up by their actions. It would certainly pinpoint the moaners out there. Don't think the moderators on here are up for the idea though. Still, we shall wait and see.

More myopic individuals advocating dislikes, I see. The purpose of giving a like is to cut out the redundant use of "QFT" etc. It is not to turn DV into a popularity/unpopularity contest. But my likes still prove I am undoubtedly very popular
