The site, where I also found the storms has me fascinated - highly recommended for clicking about and I'll just throw some more stuff in here.
      Guess what that is!

      Aquarium-landscaping!! Looks rather like some mysterio-realistic "dream-art"..

      Some from the art department:

Emptied Gestures: Physical Movement Translated into Symmetrical Charcoal Drawings by Heather Hansen | Colossal

There's a video to watch how she is doing them - it so reminded me of figures, I used to make as a child lying in the snow - like the usual angles with some extra.

New Temporary Whiteboard Drawings by Gregory Euclide | Colossal

Architectural Renderings of Life Drawn with Pencil and Pen by Rafael Araujo | Colossal

      Also for butterfly-flight..

First: A Maldives Beach Awash in Bioluminescent Phytoplankton Looks Like an Ocean of Stars | Colossal

Aand: The Dino Pet: A Living, Bioluminescent Pet | Colossal

Designed by Yonder Biology (“The DNA Art Company”), the Dino Pet is a dinosaur-shaped habitat for a species of bioluminescent marine algae that photosynthesizes during the day and glows at night. “Dino” is actually a sort of a play on words, as the actual organisms contained inside the toy model are called Dinoflagellata and are known for their ability to glow when physically agitated (ie. shaken). The pet lives for 1-3 months and can potentially live indefinitely if the algae is supplied with the proper food. The Dino Pet is currently funding on Kickstarter
There's a video with the enthused inventors, too.

      Absolutely loving this!!

Really milking the art-section of that colossal site - these are going to be the final ones - then I'll go and search somewhere else and a bit more for "sciency" things:

Of course there are many - and good to great paintings also - but I discovered a love for sculpture, it looks like!

      Found something nice again:

"Ocean Drifters, a secret world beneath the waves" is a short film about plankton written, produced and directed by Dr Richard Kirby (Marine Institute Research Fellow, Plymouth University) with a narration by Sir David Attenborough and music by Richard Grassby-Lewis.
Drawing upon Richard Kirby's plankton imagery, Ocean Drifters reveals how the plankton have shaped life on Earth and continue to influence our lives in ways that most of us never imagine.

I've been dreaming of them - visible to the eye - diatoms with 5 cm diameter - I saw them in a big aquarium.
That's unfortunately all I have - just this snippet.

Not exactly something new that I like Klein-bottles - and I got one or two in here already - but this page takes it to another level:

Dark Roasted Blend: Topological Marvel: The Klein Bottle in Art

Impossible shape with no distinct "inside" or "outside" - in Art, Fashion and Architecture

A geometric enigma, a convoluted mind-bender dropped upon us from the wonderful extra-dimensional realm of topology, the Klein Bottle is perhaps even more popular with artists and architects than the ubiquitous Moebius strip. In fact, the Klein Bottle is what happens when you merge two Moebius Strips together: the resulting shape will still have only one side - with its inside and outside merging into one!

Such a paradoxical shape is clearly not possible within our three-dimensional reality and requires a fourth dimensional jump at some point to make it all come together. Also because true Klein bottles do not have discernible "inside" or "outside", they have ZERO VOLUME. As a result, these objects can only be simulated as an "impossible art" in our world, or only modeled with a "fake" 3-D intersection, instead of a true extra-dimensional joint.

On the left you see the intricate mathematical art by Anatoly Fomenko from Russia (Klein Bottle and Torus combination); on the right is a steam Klein Bottle cart "impossible concept" by Roger Shepard:

These ones are crazy - from Science Museum London:

These are standing in Germany - insert your children and hope they get sucked away into higher dimensions:

As an avid at least ex-origamiess - I am fascinated by this enormously:
A single sheet of paper with no cuts or tape can be folded into this interlocking model of Klein Bottle: the crease patterns are available here. Dr. Robert Lang is responsible for this puzzling origami masterpiece:

The Klein Bottle House was built by architects McBride Charles Ryan just outside Melbourne, Australia, has all the trappings of a science fictional dwelling and mathematical Garden of Eden for those who like their brains and sense of orientation challenged - but it also looks surprisingly liveable and warm:

Bit of dream inspiration and other assorted stuff:

This one is soo lovely - that would be the kind of dragon - but in adolescent then, less child cuteness - only a bit - when I'll get my transformation skills on board:

I don't like most of the colour-schemes - but concerning sceneries - dreaming there would be cool:

Yeah - platypuses are fantastic - quite endangered - they need extremely clear water for finding all their food.
You can sort of adopt them, pay money for the in captivity breeding program - and then you are allowed to go into a basin and play with the females*, and cuddle and feed away - they really seem to love it!
And these adorable beaks - they are all rubbery!

They are very cool indeed - here a little collection of platypus special-effects:

The first scientists who encountered the odd-looking platypus believed someone had sewn together the body of a beaver with a duck's bill as a joke. The animal appears to be an unlikely mix of the bill and webbed feet of a duck, a beaver-like tail and the fur of an otter.
They are also one of the very few mammals to lay eggs.

Platypuses are amphibians native to freshwater lakes and streams in Eastern Australia and Tasmania. Males average 20 in (50 cm) and females are about 17 in (45 cm) long.
*Males are also very venomous having a spur on their hind foot that, when released, can kill a medium-sized dog and severely incapacitate a human. Hence they miss out on the cuddle fun above - poor guys.

Platypuses are mainly active at night, using their electroreceptors on their sensitive bills to navigate. They also use the bills to turn up soil for food.

These animals can swim well in water and are carnivorous bottom-feeders scooping up small crustaceans, larvae and worms from the floor. A platypus will store the food it scoops up in cheek pouches to consume on land.
They do not have teeth, using bits of gravel to help crush their food.
The platypus stores fat in its tail to help it survive when food is limited.

When on land, their webbing retracts and the claws are more pronounced. They walk awkwardly on their knuckles to protect the webbing.
Platypuses live in burrows they dig near the water's edge. Burrows can be very complex and up to 100 feet long.
A baby platypus is very small and helpless. They stay inside the burrow for nearly four months before they learn to swim.
Platypuses spend nearly 17 hours a day resting in their burrows.
A platypus bill is flexible and feels rubbery to the touch.
Platypuses have two layers of dense, thick fur that helps them stay warm underwater. Until the 1900s, the animals were often hunted for their fur. When swimming, the platypus shuts its eyes and ears. They usually remain about two minutes underwater before they come up for air.

      "Naked Geometry"

      Pentamen
A pentagram is a five-pointed star. When inscribed inside of a pentagon, it becomes a symbol that was of importance to the ancient Pythagoreans. The inscribed pentagram embodies the golden ratio in many ways and was used in part to identify members of the Pythagorean school.

The inscribed pentagram is also the shape of the K5 graph, a complete set of 5 vertices all connected to one another.

Here the graph is represented by a group of 5 men, with their legs forming the pentagon, their arms forming the pentagram, and their heads doubtless lost in mystical contemplation of all that is good and beautiful.
This was one of the earliest pictures in the Naked Geometry project and has become the project's symbol:

A more complicated version with female figures :

      Pentamen spiral
This spiral of human figures link their arms and legs together to form an infinite spiral based on design elements of a inscribed pentagram. Whereas in the traditional form the edges of the pentagon are equal length, in this representation each successive edge is scaled in proportion to the golden mean, thus creating a spiral instead of a closed figure. The arm and leg linkages create both forms of the golden triangles with angles of 36°, 72° and 108°:

      5 from 6
The 5 Platonic solids each created with 6 identical figures. These figures transform one into another in the video "Platonic Transform":

      Male Cube
Six male figures lock wrists to form this cube:

      Female Cube
These four female figures form a cube. This model was the first 3d printed Naked Geometry model, The Human Cube (see Sculpture section):

      Borromean Rings
No two of these rings are linked, yet the 3 together are inseparable. If any one of these 3 links is broken, the other two come apart. This is the symbol for strength in unity:

      Sierpinski Tower
The second iteration of the Sierpinski Triangle, made from gymnasts. These acrobats were created using Poser and Photoshop, but the physics is sound and a tower such as this could stand:

And now for something quite different: The Benice Equation in it's quasi-botanic fractal action - enjoy:

Something on the border of maths and art again - from Anita Chowdry:

She has also built a harmonograph:

Slow Life: A Macro Timelapse of Coral, Sponges and Other Aquatic Organisms Created from 150,000 Photographs:

Created by University of Queensland PhD student Daniel Stoupin, this remarkable macro video of coral reefs, sponges and other underwater wildlife, brings a fragile and rarely-seen world into vivid focus. Stoupin shot some 150,000 photographs which he edited down to create the final clip. He shares about the endeavor:

Time lapse cinematography reveals a whole different world full of hypnotic motion and my idea was to make coral reef life more spectacular and thus closer to our awareness. I had a bigger picture in my mind for my clip. But after many months of processing hundreds of thousands of photos and trying to capture various elements of coral and sponge behavior I realized that I have to take it one step at a time. For now, the clip just focuses on beauty of microscopic reef “landscapes.” The close-up patterns and colors of this type of fauna hardly resemble anything from the terrestrial environments. Corals become even less familiar if you consider their daily “activities.”

Fantastic thread, StephL. Some of these images are truly mindboggling.

I really want to add something to it that I found a few years ago. If you've ever wondered which instrument produced the haunting sound of the Midsomer Murders theme, look no further:

It is a theremin, aka etherphone. It is an electronic instrument invented nearly a century ago, and is played without any physical contact.

I think, I saw a theremin in a science fiction movie a long while back - perfect for this thread!
It is a pleasure to watch - and looks, as if you needed a very high level of concentration - she also seems to stand completely still, besides her actual gestures. Eerily beautiful sound - I will actually look for more to listen to!

I always loved these snails and played with them a lot as a child in the garden. They are lovely - being tenderly interested in everything and looking adorable - feeelers!! If I would have had a macro-camera and a bit of technical basics - it could have been me, arranging them in some sweet scenery and see what they do.

Bravo Siby!! I love the theremin. First time I heard it was on Spoilsbury Toast Boy on fat-pie.com, and I thought it was a human voice being modified somehow. But the recording they used was a really old one, probably from a century ago lol. The one you posted was gorgeous though, and that's the first time I've seen someone actually play one. Looks like she's magic. So cool.
