A minecraft world has 9.216e+17 blocks.

That number translates to 921,600,000,000,000,000m^3.

How does one say this number, you ask?

921 quadrillion 600 trillion blocks.

If you count the blocks in the nether as well, that number turns into...

1.8432e+18 blocks.

Or 1,843,200,000,000,000,000m^3.

How does one even say that number you ask?

1 quintillion 843 quadrillion 200 trillion blocks.

That's a stupid amount of blocks.

If that was all made of stone, and you were to mine it with a diamond pickaxe that never ran out of durability, taking .3 seconds to mine a block of stone,

It would take 6.144 quadrillion seconds to mine every single block without error or pause in between.

Ok as a computer engineering student, I'm curious as to how big the map file would be.

My survival world is 53.2 MB. Given that each block/placed item has an ID from 0-255, each block could be represented by 1 byte. 1.8432e+18 bytes = 1.8e+15 KB = 1.757e+12 MB = about 1.716e+9 GB = about 1.676 million TB = something really weird.

So how does it compress it so small? Does it only save the chunks that you have rendered, and then randomize newly visited chunks based on the world seed? If so, would it be possible to crash your computer if you took the time to visit every chunk?

I imagine it could also use run length compressing (i.e. instead of storing 6 Grass blocks, 2 Stone blocks, and 5 Grass blocks as GGGGGGSSGGGGG, it could store it as G6S2G5, hypothetically of course), as the air above ground probably makes up a good portion of the map.

Well, most people don't exactly render every single chunk in the game.

So most people's worlds are likely something FAR FAR FAAAAAAR smaller like 5,000x5,000 blocks.


Also, I def did the math for breaking all the blocks wrong.

Should have just multiplied that 1.83 quintillion number by .3

So, is this thread supposed to justify the amount of time I've spend on Minecraft? Because put in this perspective, I haven't played Minecraft very much after all. So yea, I'm going to use this thread to justify playing more Minecraft right now.

If I remember it correctly, you are probably correct. I know there is a method to connect portals via coordinate math and stuff.

In that case, the number of blocks is far smaller haha.

Nether is different. I think every one block in the nether represents 8 blocks in the overworld? I think that's what I multiplied by to connect portals. I could spend 2 seconds looking up and confirming this, but instead I'm spending those two seconds telling you that I didn't do that. Granted I don't know how/if that affects the total block count.
