You freakin romantics make me sick - I just ordered a pizza for me and my little furry bitch. Then sat together and watched the Chronicles of Riddick. All this after I finished remodeling my bathroom.

      Ain't love grand!

Well, because valentines day was on a weekday, my boyfriend and i had to celebrate it last weekend. I was working, so i kinda thought i wouldn't be in the mood.
But he'd gone to town setting a lovely table for me, and sorting dinner out. We sat there for an hour talking about anything and everything, and then he gave me a beautiful valentines card, with a note saying 'clue number one: you put stuff in me when i go on holiday'.
I worked that out. There were many more clues dotted around, and it led to a small gold chain with half a heart on it, of which he has the other half.
We just basically spent time together. No big deal, because every day is like valentine's day. Why wait till a certain day in the year to say 'i love you'?

try to go back and make them last.'

Same here....I only get to see my fiance on weekends so we had to celebrate it then. We pretty much just spent time together and he gave me a cool oil lamp that I love. It has a fake flower inside and it is shaped like a heart. I gave him some incense that he had been wanting and a bunch of candy. Because we only get to see each other on weekends, it seems so much more speacial when we are together, though I would love to be able to see him every day!
      Shine on, you crazy diamond!

      False!

The first recorded association of St. Valentine's Day with romantic love was in the 14th century in England and France, where February 14 was traditionally the day on which birds paired off to mate. This belief is mentioned in Geoffrey Chaucer's Parlement of Foules (1381). It was common during that era for lovers to exchange notes on this day and to call each other their "Valentines". A 14th century valentine is said to be in the collection of the British Library. It is probable that many of the legends about St. Valentine were invented during this period. Among the legends are ones that assert that:

      * On the evening before St. Valentine was to be martyred for being a Christian, he passed a love note to his jailer's daughter that read, "From Your Valentine."
      * During a ban on marriages of Roman soldiers by the Emperor Claudius II, St. Valentine secretly helped arrange marriages.

In most versions of these legends, February 14 is the date associated with his martyrdom.

One of the most famous, though often overlooked, mentions of Valentine's Day in literature is made by Ophelia during her insane speech in Act IV of Hamlet by William Shakespeare when she says the line "Tomorrow is Saint Valentine's Day."
