I gave up cakes and sugary food, but one day in I made some pancakes (real ones, not American ones :P). So oops, looks like I suck. |

First off, I'm not Catholic, but I think that it's interesting to hear what different people gave up "for Lent." I know the reasoning behind it, but for me it's a specific time where I can practice moderation or better habits, kind of like a more potent New Years Resolution. |

I'm not sure if this counts as giving up something in the spirit of a holiday, but since I came to the Netherlands I've given up all nasty American snack foods. Occasionally I'll indulge in a Dutch stroopwaffel but, really, who can blame me for that? I’ve also pretty much cut salt from my diet entirely. |

My sister is Catholic and she said she gave up soda - but only colored soda, clear soda is fine. What the hell is that?? Soda is soda, no matter what color it is. I don't get it. |

I'm giving up lent this year. For god's sake, I'm not going to make my OWN life a misery by cutting down on things I like. That's for other people to do, like parents and politicians. |
