      Japan's artificial indoor beach

      http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1554350

      fascinating.

personally though, i'd still prefer the real thing, even when cloudy & cold.

An artificial beach- mankind's latest attempt at severing all links to anything natural.

      Nice though

Why not just walk/drive/bike the quarter mile or so to the real beach just outside of the faux-beach dome?

judging by the commentary I'm guessing the real beach is pretty toxic. Or maybe it's a coastline without much of a beach like we have up here in mass. This manmade monstrosity must kick the crap out of the real beach to warrant paying $50 to get in (and look at the crowds!) I would probably go once, but I don't think I could live with myself if I regularly went to a manmade indoor stadium to spend a day outside at the beach.

That thing is gigantic!!, I don't see any practical use for this other than to draw turists, and still, who knows if that actualy pays it for. This is one of those things that make me ask why they don't use the money on other stuff like medicine research or educacional pourpouses.

All it is really is an indoor water park..seems pointless.

I think it's kind of cool. Though the real thing is probably a lot better, I can't help but at least want to check the place out.

I wonder how they keep birds out when the dome is open...or rather get rid of the birds that wander in, once they're ready to close the roof?

Maybe they leave them inside. Bird shit all over the "beach" would certainly add to the realism.

At least you wouldn't have to worry about sharks. The air / water temperature is always right, and presumably the water is cleaner than the real beach. So, I could see myself going there, for reasons other than the sheer wonder of seeing it in person the first time.

Not much of a water current to carry away any 'debris' if someone decided to have a dump.

The water is probably chlorinated like pool water. Without the natural cleaning processes which filter a natural ocean, that beach dome would have to rely on regular chemical dumps to keep it sanitary. I don't know what they'd do about solid waste, though... they might use some sort of huge fishing net to campture any, er, floaters.

I think they'd use netting to keep the birds out? That seems the most logical. By the way, Peregrinus, what are those natural cleaning processes and how do they work? It would help get rid of one of those things I ponder on (thinking of how gross the water is from how much feces/urine/flatus juice is in there).

Well I definetly think I have it in some ways... but there are some things (I couldn't really list em right now because I can't think of any) that I just wonder how they work so it helps get my mind off of it when I learn how it works. But do you say that because I ponder about that or why exactly?
