      Isaac Hayes Quits South Park

Isaac Hayes Quits 'South Park' By ERIN CARLSON, Associated Press Writer

Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.

Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he's cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians."

Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.

Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."[/b]

      Well damn. That blows.

As much as I hate to say it, though, Stone has a point.

South Park has been tip toeing around Scientology for a long time because of Isaac Hayes. They had no problem busting on other religions so all I can say is see ya! Chef will be missed.

Oh that's lame. I don't watch South Park, but I thought that was just from thinking about the recent episode's crude satire of christianity and other religions (I just assumed this). But when he was fine with that until they made fun of his own completely absurd "religion," that is definetly pretty silly of him.

Yeah, south park went kind of downhill the last few years, first it was great. But it wil never be the same without the chocolate balls of love chef brought into the show <=/

ah well, I do hope they just let chef die and make one really cool scientology joke

      yeah I'm confused

it's ok for them to make fun of their OWN religion, but no one else can

I think it's a scam to gain more popularity

I like SouthPark, but sometimes I just feel they go too far and I actually can't keep watching. In regards to religion I'm not concerned what they have to say either way, but I just mean some of their topics (or the events that happen) are well, really quite awful. For instance, I really can't sit there and watch [even cartoon] animals being butched or shot to death, with the blood splattering all over. Har, har.

I think that pretty much sums it up. Moron.

I'll miss his voice but not his attitude. South Park however has already lost it's fresh gleam. It dosen't have the edge it once did.

It didn't actually said he would be back either...it said someone quit for him. Maybe his scientology representive quit for him? Any religion that had a representive following me around all the time would really make me question their motives.
