Uh, no...I have friends that are Mormon, and they told me that they don't practice in polygamy anymore.
The only reason why they did was because there were some evil discriminative people (against their religion) that slaughtered a whole bunch of the wive's husbands, and with them unable to sustain themselves anymore, they had to get married to some of the others so they could survive (oh, and many of the husband's wives and children got killed as well).
And what I recently learned in Utah Gov:
After being persecuted by the government yet again, Brigham Young told them that they should not practice in that anymore, that all members of the church should obey the laws, after all, they did believe in obeying laws.
Uh, and well, no matter what religion you are, it isn't really nice to bother people of other faiths like that.
BTW, I would like to see you sometime, Howie, but just so you know, in person, I am a lot more different than I am online!
People can come up with rationalizations and reasons and excuses for anything.... we call all that 'spin' nowadays. Lawyers engage in 'spin' for their clients, and politicians are adept at spinning for themselves. So, you can say that the Mormons engaged in polygamy because there were extra women, but so many cultures have had to deal with an imbalance of their female demigraphic without resorting to sexually enslaving them, which is, afterall what multiple marriage is... a form of sexual enslavement. Ordinarily such women find employment as domestics, nurses, school teachers, nannies, or they spread themselves out more socially as prostitutes. In Catholic Cultures many 'extra' women take Religious Orders and become Nuns.
