Have you seen this? Don't know what it is..

For the stories I finished/am working on, I've used these pin/needle like things, and I don't know what they are. I'm trying to figure it out, because I can remember seeing one at somepoint. To get an idea of what they're like, it's like a knitting needle, but thicker, heavier, and made of charred black iron. They're about 9-12 inches in length, and kind of sharp, but not really. I can't remember where I was when I saw one of these things, but I'm betting it was either an old person's house or an antique shop. For an idea of their shape, here's a picture: Anybody have a clue what the hell these things are?

Might be the minute hand off of a clock some clock hands had oval 'eyes' so you could adjust the position on the clock face *edit* Failing that iron needles are used all over the place in physics for electro-magnetic gizmos

Depending on how thick it is, it could be the stake that holds together two train cars at the hitch point.

Hmm, well I'm pretty sure it's not a clock hand, bubble blower, or train hitch, because it's not the right size for any of those. The tent stake and old fashioned hair pin might be possible. However, I think it weighed about 2 or 3 pounds, so that might be too heavy for a hair thing. I dunno, it's weird. I've been trying to figure out what these things are for quite a while, and can't seem to find anything about them. Although I'm pretty sure I didn't just make it up.
