The US National Weather Service has issued a tsunami warning for New Zealand and Fiji after an earthquake in the Pacific Ocean.

The tremor, off Tonga, happened at 4.26pm UK time and had a magnitude of 8.1 on the Richter scale.

It was not immediately clear what damage it caused but there reports that it had been felt in several islands.

The quake struck 95 miles south of Tonga's Neiafu island and 1,340 miles northeast of Auckland, New Zealand.

The Tonga islands are an archipelago east of Australia and northeast of New Zealand.

An earthquake in December 2004 off Indonesia caused a tsunami across the Indian Ocean that killed more than 200,000 people in several countries.[/b]
