      i WAS ASSAULTED BY A BIRD TODAY...TWICE!!!

ahem..sorry for my excitement, but something i read just reminded me that this happened earlier, as i had almost forgotten (little tipsy)...and dammit, it's not something that happens everyday... i was doing reality checks left and right

i was biking into town and all of a sudden i felt something descend on my head and thrash around abruptly. i was thinking a bird had shat an enormous load on me, but as i was feeling around it happened again, this time very pronouced pecking and clawing...

as i jerked my head around at cruising speed i saw a bird swooping in for another assault and managed to non-physically ward it off with a waving arm.

upon a little research right now i have identified the culprit:

"The male Red-winged Blackbird fiercely defends his territory during the breeding season. He may spend more than a quarter of all the daylight hours in territory defense. He vigorously keeps all other males out of the territory and defends the nests from predators. He will attack much larger animals, including horses and people"

      *laughs* 8)

I have this same problem every year w/ what I was told was chimney sweeps (type of bird) they attack me all the time this time of year.
Apparently they think MY front porch is thier breeding ground and "nesting space".
Its pretty bad when I have leave my home carrying a broom to ward off the angry birds.
      Nature....what can you do?

Hahaha. That actually happens a little more than you'd think. I found that out a couple of years ago.

I was on my way to work one day and had stopped at a stoplight waiting in a long line of traffic. As I was sitting there, I happened to look over at the sidewalk on the other side of the street and there was this guy just walking along minding his own business. Now this guy had a huge Bob-Rossian 'fro, which may or may not have played a role in this, and this blue jay swooped down out of a tree overhead toward him. It fluttered over his head a few times pecking and clawing at the big patch of hair as the guy was all ducking and swatting his arms. The bird flew back up in the tree for about 5 seconds as the guy kept walking, a little faster. The bird then flew straight toward him again and started just attacking the hell out of this guy's head. Rofl. I felt so bad because EVERYBODY in traffic was watching this guy get mauled by this bird, but DAMN was it funny. He swatted it away again and started damn near running away from the tree. The blue jay waited until the guy got a good 50 yards away from the tree and then shot at him AGAIN like a damn missle from the tree and started assaulting him more.
It wasn't until the guy ran for another good twenty or so yards before the blue jay finally left him alone. Hahaha. But after that, I started reading about how aggressive blue jays are, and have seen two or three similar incidents that have all been attacks by blue jays. Haha. Damn aggressive bastards.

Hah, yeah. Same kind of birds took a couple swoops at me many years back, but they never actually attacked me quite like that. Came pretty close to hitting me, though.
