      is this wrong?

So I bought my friends 20 GB 4th gen iPod for 40 bucks (he didn't know about iPod manual update or rockbox, thought it was useless)... When I got it home and charged I looked through and found a bunch of indie and emo music that I know he wouldn't listen to so I asked him where he got it from... He said he found it in the locker room. Errr. Now normally I would turn it in but then I would be out 40 bucks... And for someone who doesn't get an allowance and who's only income is pocketed lunch money change, this is a lot. Judging by the kind of music that was on it and their play count it seemed like this was just a punk/emo/goth (are they still called goths?) kid who has stole countless things in his life and probably deserved it, but still. Should I turn it in?

Personally, I'd be more worried about calling someone you cheated out of his item, a "friend"...

Lol well he didn't exactly cheat me, he just thought he was because he thought that an ipod can only get its music from one computer at a time or else it deletes its library and starts over (which is true, unless you have it on manual update which he knew nothing about)

It was actually a steal because it was chock full with 2500 bucks worth of nonprotected music, however I only saved about a third of it, the rest was just horribly recorded people on guitars moaning about pills and the horrible, horrible government. I felt like killing myself multiple times while reviewing the music.

you can tell someone likely deserved to have their ipod stolen based on the music they listen to?

if you are psychic, you should know exactly what to do.

i would say keep it and spend hours and hours filling it with your favourite songs...then i hope someone steals it

Just keep it, if the emo kid ever founds out, just blame it on your friend..

      Pretty simple.

Merlock... i didnt read your post right... oops :/

As for the iPod, my mom bought it from me and now she uses it.

It wasnt exactly in the greatest condition, it had the imfamous "click of death" if left in the dock for a long time, it got hot when playing music that was encoded too high or DRM'ed, and the screen was scratched up beyond help (or so they probably thought, not everybody has heard of brasso) so they probably abandoned it (he found it the day after the ipod video release, kids seem to "lose" their stuff when they want a newer, updated version) and also the ipod was named after one of the songs. my friend dugg deeper and found that it had only been renamed a day before he had found it.

And as for judging by the music, my school is littered with emo/goth criminals (one punk had the nerve to wear a jacket he stole from me in class right across from me, and claim it as his own, his only evidence being that my name was nowhere on it, he had cut off all the tags) picking a random face from the yearbook would be just as good of a randomizer as flipping a coin.

hrm. Sure, we can form impressions about people in regards to the music they listen to, but deciding one is an outright criminal based on the aforementioned seems a bit much don't you think?

Regardless, you should ask yourself how you'd feel if you lost something of similar value. My advice would be to do the right thing--turn it in--and then explain the situation to your parents; they'll likely be proud of you and possibly willing to offer partial remuneration.

OK about "goths," I don't think anyone even knows what that word means anymore. Every time I hear it being used, the person saying it has no idea what they're talking about. "Emo" lost its meaning recently when pop culture got a hold of it.

Now as for this iPod, if you got one using docthory's method, then you wouldn't be stealing and you'd get one free
Back with less attitude and more diffidence than ever before! Maybe.

Turn it in. Do what you'd like to be done to you. And you should get that 40 back from your "friend". He made $40 from something that wasnt his. And dont justify it by saying that he probably steals because hes emo. Aside from that not even being an emo stereotype(I really dont know where you got that idea from) it's ridiculous to judge anyone based on the music they listen to. Honestly it sounds like you know what you should do. $40 is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Doing the right thing will be MUCH more rewarding. No joke.

It sounds like you're trying to build up reasons to keep it. Making it easier to sleep at night by assuming hes a thief or left it on purpose. Who purposely leaves an ipod? Even if he was getting a new one. And anyways, it's all speculation.

Turn it in!? Well... you have more choices than that.

You can post a Lost and Found Note on a bulletin board requesting a $40 reward from the rightful owner...

I suppose as long as you do not add a profit mark-up you cannot be seriously held for 'trafficking in stolen goods'.

Or... better yet... the 'friend' who sold it to you for $40... well have him give you your money back or threaten to have him imprisoned, and then Post the Item on a Lost and Found Bulletin Board.

Oh, and nobody 'finds' such things in locker rooms. These things are always stolen.

Which brings up a pet-peeve of mine, and that is Capital Punishment should be applied to every deliberate Criminal who intentionally acts to victimize other people merely for their own profit. Angels once appeared to me and lectured me on Red Sins and Black Sins. Red Sins are sins of passion and appetite -- of the Flesh, and they have little hold upon the Spirit, and when a person dies, it is very easy to rise above the Red Sins that had mostly been connected entirely to the body and died when the body died. But Black Sins are planned and committed deliberately, with the cold determination of bringing suffering to others for one's own momentary convenience. These are Sins of the Spirit -- a mark of a flaw in Character, and it is a kind of Selfishness that could survive the grave, and would require a Hell to prevent from contaminating the Integrity of any Heaven.

Any and Every deliberate thief should be killed. When any Society is ready to go to War, then why not discern exactly who the worst Enemies of Society are. Thieves are our Worst Enemies, and their Thievery should be seen as shots fired in battle. And we have every right to return Fire. So it should never be allowed that the Sun should rise and set and rise and set again on any convicted thief, but that they should not be hung first, and their bodies tossed in a dumpster. The World would be a better place.

I agree! Those whos steal ipods are the worst sort of people...oh wait...no...I dont agree at all. You're insane. Kill people woh steal? Red sin? Black sin? Schizophrenics making up different kinds of sins.....interesting idea anyways. Would make a great book.

Leo, we were having a reasonably mature and worthwhile discussion...please don't come along and interject craziness. Murder every thief? Ignorant blanket statements like that are exactly why man shouldn't have the right to decide who lives and dies.

Murder theives? doesnt that create a paradox, since you are "taking" someones life and then you must die too? hrmph?

      speaking of stealing

some dude that thinks hes my friend and follows me around stole someones glasses (hes too poor to afford 350 dollar glasses, and he shows it off to people "look at what I jacked") and he has the nerve to WEAR them. I stole them from him one day and said I would give them back only if he agreed to stop following me around and to say (on a tape recorder) that I am the most beautifullest person ever. So someone else stole my idea and asked for a large sum of money in return for the glasses and now he doesnt have glasses anymore. And he still follows me around.

Whenever I find something, I take it and don't think about who could own it.

But I don't actively snoop around and take what isn't mine.

      You draw the line somewhere.
