      Yeah! It was great!

      Just thinking about something now...:

If you are going to buy a guitar, get a USED one. Get it at like a pawn shop or something.

      Reasons:
1: The guitar already has a "feel" and "soul", a unique sound. And it's already worn in.
2: They tend to not know how to price guitars. I had a friend buy a guitar at a pawn shop for $100 that was worth about $600 (mostly from age).
3: The choice is pretty good, anywhere from '60's fenders to last year's ltc.
4: You can find some pretty unique amps, too. As of right now, I have a local pawn shop holding a 100 watt amp with two 12", covered in red-dyed alligator leather.

Learn on an acoustic. It will do wonders for your technique. I learned on electric and can't quite make the transition to acoustic... I found I was relying too much on the distortion to cover up my crappy sound.

I feel that I must retract my last post concerning this topic. Since you said that your friend might get a guitar, too, it sounds like you may find that your competing for the position for second guitarist in your future band. In which case, run out and get a decent electric guitar and amp today! You don't have enough time to be sitting home learning diminished 5ths, hybrid picking, arpeggios, & music theory on your shiny new acoustic. By the time your ready to pick up an electric and SHRED, your buddies may have landed a record contract and be touring by then!
So, instead, pick up an electric, learn a few power chords, turn up the distortion, and rock! You can worry about technique later. Learn how to read tablature (it takes about 3 minutes), and get sheet music off the internet. Just about any song you can think of is out there somewhere written in tab.
It isn't that common to have two lead guitarists in a band, but there are alot of them out there. More common is the lead/rhythm guitarist duo. If you were to play rhythm, all you do is stand back and play chords (mostly) while the lead guitarist does all the complicated stuff!
The only way you'll get into the band with an acoustic guitar is if your planning to cover alot of Tracy Chapman tunes!

Well, I got an acoustic..It is a begginers acoustic, so it is a bit smaller than a normal one.I guess my grandparents heard me talking about getting a guitar and they went out and bought this one.Im happy with it, but as soon as I learn some basic stuff, Im either buying a bigger acoustic or switching to electric.Oh yeah, I got plenty of time because my friend doesn't get his guitar for a few months.
      You guys suck.

being a drummer I'm not one to talk, but get an electric, only because the music you can play on it is superior.

After a year and a half, I finally got in for guitar lessons, yay!

If you want to play in a rock/punk band, I would suggest tuning your guitar to drop D, learn powah chords, and the C pentatonic.

But the more theory you know, the better you will play.
