I'd assume you'll have to check with a professional to see if you have sufficient corneal thickness or whatever. It's done often enough so it is relatively safe.

My sister had it about a year ago and she said it was the best thing she'd ever done for herself. She said even as soon as they were done with the surgery, she could read the wall clock at the other end of the room - something she could never do before.

Like Squall said, you'll need to go in for an ocular examination to make sure you are a good candidate for the procedure.
And if you do have it done, make sure you stick to all the recommended post-op home care instructions very strictly - there's no point going through it and then not take care of your eyes properly afterwards. Especially since your eyesight is something you don't want to fuck with. Proper home care is extremely important in the healing process.

I think my sister had to use special eye drops every couple hours for a given amount of time, wear special sunglasses while driving, and couldn't wear eye make-up for quite awhile afterwards. But it's definitely worth it - just imagine not having to worry about contacts or glasses!

I absolutely have every intention of having this done as soon as my optometrist gives the OK. It's been around for a while and the technology has improved greatly in the last several years.

As soon as I'm old enough and if I'm a candidate for it, I am so doing this. Contacts were fun at first, but now it's a bother more than anything else.

oh well, still would be awesome to wake up in the morning and actually be able to see

My mom had laz0r-eye-churgery. She is happy about it. I think I will do it too. Contactlenses are okay I guess, but I really would like to wake up with 20-20 (preferably next to a hot girl... however perhaps not being able to see good in the morning isn't such a bad thing )

No, but if it fails (small chance), you have to get reading glasses.

20-20 is actually american slang as far as I know for 'perfect eyesight'. 20 is the best value humanly possible. Or something around those lines.

At least that is what I thought it was

Oh and if you operation gets fucked up and you have bad luck, you need huge glasses And contacts to see Anything at all. At least that is what I heard. Probably a silly horror-story. Lazer-eye-stuff just gets better and cheaper every year

That's a silly horror story. A myth.

The truth is, if it fails, you need glasses for reading. AND your eyes still havn't been "fixed" (as in, to '20-20', their sight still sucks), but you don't need huge glasses to see anything at all.

I'd be happy even if my sight didn't end up being 20/20. I have a slight astigmatism and my eye sight is terrible (my contact prescription is -6.5 and -6.75, so even if I could be at a point where I'd just need glasses occasionally (ie. to read a sign) then that'd be great!

Right now, without my contacts I can see shapes and colors, but I am unable to see any details (lines, letters, words, etc.) that are are more than a foot in front of my face unless they're super-huge. And I've noticed my astigmatism a little bit more over the years. It's not readily apparent, but sometimes I'll start to see a slight double-image of something if I'm looking for it.

And when one says 20/20, it's not necessarily perfect vision, but that just means that you are able to clearly see details at a certain size that are... 15 feet away or something like that. It's kind of the mid-point between having trouble seeing things far away (nearsightedness/miopia) or having trouble seeing things close up (farsightedness/I don't know the technical term).

Ah ok, so that is what 20/20 mean... I am just glad didn't made it up or something =)

And star, that pretty much sucks balls. I have -5 with both of my eyes, but with contacts I see fine. It's that A-word thingy that makes your eyes so? I hope that a big friggin' laz0r can treath that!

And Amethyst, that really sucks. My contact prescription is -2.75 and -2.25.. And I thought that sucked.. lol

well, I've worn glasses since i could remember. i now wear contacs, and i never want to go back to glasses. contacs are getting on my nerves, even when i clean them well sometimes i get excruciating pain in my eyes when i put them in.

i will definately have to look into Lasik surgery. i might not be able to get it tho. i have a rare prescription.

And eh yeah, contacts tend to be shitty some days. Do you have hard and small contacts or big and soft/bendable contacts? (I bolded contacts just to prevent immature and perverted replies)

When I was in 5th/6th grade I first wore contacts and they were gas permeable (essentially hard contacts), and I hated them with a passion. They were so uncomfortable that most of the time I would go to school or wherever with only one in. But then I switched back to glasses.

My senior year I went back to contacts and was able to get green-colored ones (because I worked for my optometrist) and they were soft and I have enjoyed them ever since. Hopefully when I have a few more $$s, I can get those green ones again. I love it when people ask, "Are those your real eyes?"

When my eyes stop changing (and they have been recently) I'm going to have the surgery done. If I'm lucky that might happen in the next couple years, but I'm not crossing my fingers yet.

Yeah Hard contacts really suck. Really have no good sides. Maybe they are cheaper, but they irritate your eyes alot more, losing them is worse becouse they arn't monthly, and basicly they are just annoying me by their looks alone.

Actually as far as I remember 20/20 means you can see at 20 feet what most people can see at 20 feet. Meaning you have average good vision. Following this standard if you have 20/50 vision it means you can see clearly at 20 feet what most people can see clearly at 50 feet. Likewise, having 20/10 vision means you can see clearly something at 20 feet what most people can only see at 10 feet.

My dad got Laser eye surgery last year, and he does not regret it, although there's been some side effects.
No, it's nothing serious. His eyes have been dry, as in drier than they should be, and this got worse after the surgery, but it wasn't ever actually a health issue, just uncomfortable.

I'm so jealous of you. my prescription is such that they don't make colored ones for mine. i can get non prescription ones tho but i would still be blind and lazy in one eye.

What kind of prescription do you have, ranma?

The advantage of hard contacts is that it has a tendency to help retain the eye's shape so that it doesn't change as much. When I had those contacts it was because my sight was still deteriorating at a relatively rapid rate. From third grade (when I first got glasses) to fourth grade, my prescription doubled.

My eyes are stable. In the 1.5 years I have had contacts (and at first glasses) my eyes have always been -2.25 and -2.75.

I hate hard contacts >_< A friend of mine has them and he says that at first (first couple of weeks/months) it feels as if someone put sand in your eyes.
