Thumbs up

My absolute favorite holiday is Halloween.

Because:
- fall is my favorite season
- scary movies come out this time of year
- ghost stories and haunted house shows on TV
- all the cool Halloween decorations
- costume parties
- Halloween candy
- kids having fun trick or treating
- the folklore behind All Hallow's Eve is fascinating

Please note: The poll choices are more American-ish (except Cinco de Mayo which we Americans use as an excellent excuse to get wasted), so some holidays that aren't observed here probably aren't listed. Don't mean to offend, but there are a bazillion holidays and I couldn't list them all.

I like New Years. The parties are always just a little more sexy, IMO.

SINTERKLAAS!

Sinterklaas.

Your santa claus is actually a rip-off of this dude The names kind of look alike. His actual name is 'St. Nicolai' (sint nicolaas). There is an old myth about a saint giving poor children in a village pieces of gold by letting his servants go in the house through the chimney. However we dutch raped the story, so now it's an old man from spain (no idea why) and he has a hoarde of helpers, called 'zwarte pieten' -black 'joes', piet is just an ordinairy name like joe in the netherlands. Some people were bitchy about it being racist and all, but people seem to have forgotten that his helpers are actually black becouse of the chimneys, not becouse they are negro. (not that they are, I think they are not).

And lets not forget that in the original book of charly and the chocolate factory the workers were little black people too! : )

Anyhow, sinterklaas rocks, he gives kids a bunch of presents every 5th of december. And he's in town (country) like 2 week before that, so people have alot of random occasions to bomb people with 'peppernoten' (kind of a kookie, only cooler).

After all this, how can you ignore the GREATNESS OF SINTERKLAAS

Well... we actually don't HAVE Cinco de Mayo, Independence Day, or Thanksgiving here in NZ. And Halloween isn't really celebrated all THAT much... I don't like Christmas or Easter because of all the religious nonsense... So, UI'm gonna go with New Year's, just by default.

Well, here in the middle of nowhere, we don't have about half of the holidays listed...it's rather boring around here..but my favourite is Christamas by far! Because:

-I love snow!
-I love snow in the park in my town and the pretty shiny lights!
-I love it that the lake is frozen and I can fool around on it.
-I love the decorations!!! Especially in window shops when they put present boxes in neat wrapings.
-I love it the first time I see the big Xmas tree brought in front of our Town Hall.
-I love getting presents that I don't want to unwrap beacuse the wraping paper is too sweet...
-I love giving presents and recieving them!
-I LOVE carols!!! (I think I'm gonna go listen to John Lennon's "Happy Xmas(The War is Over)" now)
-I love carolers!
-I love it how everyone is so merry...
-I love believing that a miracle is going to happen in the most magic night of the year.....

Made up my mind to make a new start,

Going To California with an aching in my heart.

christmas... because that's the only day in the year i absolutely LOVE christianity...

but seriously: i like new year's eve the best...
i still think it's a strange idea of us humans: "Time", and this night is when i think about it the most (and right then, i have more than enough time to do so).

and btw: while i'm at it, why has my lucid age changed to "0-2 mons". what the hell are mons anyway?
last time i checked i had it filled out as +/- 1 year...

God I love Sinterklaas. And actually, he's not from Spain. He lives in Spain, but he's from Turkey.
And eh.. Yeah pepernoten rooooock.

Só. I love Christmas, because of the setting.. It's cold outside, and nice and warm inside. Everything is cosy and shit, and.. presents. Woo!

IMHO that is racist. It's just like the golliwog in the UK, and the Dutch had colonies in Africa too didn't they. Of course some people claim it isn't but it's subtle indoctrination of kids, they will associate similar looking people with the qualities portrayed in the story. Just like people will go up to a soap opera actor and talk to them like he's the actual character, maybe get angry at him because of what his character did!

lol wtf is that. Well it might have been racist a bit indeed (but found normal at the time), now it is just tradition. No one hates 'zwarte piet', and sinterklaas respects it's 'zwarte pieten'.

-

And yeah the actual saint came from turkey, but the dutch just changed the fairytale-sinterklaas's land to spain at the time when spain was he most powerfull country in europe.
