I'm taking yoga for the first time this semester and it's harder than I thought it would be. Not only is it a lot of stretching, but it really does work your muscles more than I thought! I'm actually a little sore from it today.

So, does anyone practice yoga regularly? If so, for how long have you been practicing? What kind, and is there something you like about that particular style? I really don't know a whole lot about it besides the few poses that we've learned so far.

(And as my instructor was demonstrating a new one today I was thinking to myself, "Uh, lady, my body doesn't do that." But apparently hers does! It's crazy&#33

i've done yoga. i didn't really do it for too long. because IMHO once you get the basic stretches down and a few of the intermediate ones. there's no real need for monthly fee's.

i took my yoga @ the local school. which means i was paying double for the lessons. as much as i don't suggest illegal downloads there's no sense in paying the huge amounts of money, for mediocore (sp?) training. especially if it's from a teacher who's teaching @ the local (let's make money from soccer moms) level.

if your from america (U.S.) and i assume you are. the local yoga classes may teach good stretches, which is fine as long as you accompany them with some other form of meditation/training. many people forget that yoga wasn't originally taught as a exercise. it was originally taught as a form of meditation (i.e. it could liberate one to be "mindless")

yoga is the basis for shaolin kung fu, indian wrestling, and other physical training. that pushes your body beyond it's threshold. strecthing is ALWAYS good. in fact most people don't remember that most countries' governments encourage stretching even when your not involved in exercising.

stretching has been know to reduce certain types of cancers (i don't know how), aretheritis, and many many other effects of the body.

in short, the stretches are always good, but it's not exactly something you should be paying for at the local strip mall. once you know the strecthes. take your money and leave. they can't take that money awway from you monthly anymore. plus there's prolly plenty of sites that teach the stretches.

unless you happen to be one of the people who needs others to remain active. then by all means. keep doing it if it makes you happy. happiness is the most important thing you can find in your life time.

I started doing yoga and pilates awhile ago before I got married to try to get into shape. Like you said, Ame, it was a lot harder than it looks!

I didn't go to class, though, I bought some DVDs from Target - they're the GAIAM Mind, Body, Health ones. I got one for arms, back, and shoulders; one for hips and thighs; and a cardio pilates one. I can't motivate myself to go to the gym so I figured this was the next best thing. I especially like the cardio pilates DVD - I was sore for like 4 days the first time I did it!

I'm not doing them much anymore, though I should get back into it once my wrist is back to normal. I didn't get into it for the meditative value (though the first 2 DVDs I listed are good for meditation), but more for the workout. I'd recommened them if you ever stop the class and want to do it at home instead.

That's not a bad idea, Burns. The class I'm in is essentially free since it's through our school and we have to pay a recreation fee anyway. If there is a fee, it's pretty minimal for the whole semester. And sometimes it's nice to have an instructor there just in case I don't think I'm doing it right.

I don't think I'd take the class anywhere else. Paying $10 an hour to contort myself isn't exactly my idea of a good investment. So I'm getting what I can out of this.

And I just wanted to see if others did yoga and what their experiences have been.
