      Thumbs up

Anyone taking online courses for their degree? Or even if you are not do you know what advantages this approach has compared to it's disadvantages?

      Commuting is a BIG plus.
Because my job is on call, I could do the work load at my own pace and time.

How do firms and agencies look at an online degree?
Does this effect your job employment opportunities any differently than that of an on campus degree?

      Thanks all.

It probably depends in which country one lives. Self-study has been on top recently.
      I'm tired being sorry.

Correspondance and distance education are generally grinned upon by schools and employers - as what many faculty members of my schools in Canada tell me. At one time I did consider it as well, however, the personal nature of the study creates a bias not too mention testing performance of study becomes a little edgy sometimes too.

Be careful - there are many distance education programs which are actually unceritified and award false or unrecognized certificates.

I did one class of correspondance - I do not recommend distance education.

      Thanks for the input.
When you say, "Correspondence and distance education are generally grinned upon by schools and employers."I take that as they like it? Did I misunderstand.
The rest of your thoughts seem to not take that same tone.

If you care to share it, what was your main reason for not recommending distant education?

It depends on what college you're attending if it's looked at as legitiment or not. My sister is doing her business degree completely online and it's totally the real thing. I think with some things online degrees can be beneficial, especially if it's business-related (no hands-on experience required), or if the commute is an issue.

I took a couple of my lecture-only vet courses online when they were offered, because my commute was 45 minutes one-way and it was much more convenient. Obviously this wouldn't work with the rest of my classes which required hands-on experience, but I loved the online classes for the lecture-only ones. I actually felt like I learned more because of the forum-style correspondance, and I could log on at my own convenience to do it.

I'd recommend it if the online school has all their credentials and everything.

      Thanks.
I looked them up at the BBB. They had a clear record there.
I guess what I need to do is find out the appropriate regulatory agency for Ohio and find what credentials are required for entry level employment for landscape design.

I took a psychology correspondance course. When I asked other institutions wether or not the credits were transferable, almost all of them told me no. Most of them told me that it was because distance education lacks the direct education from their own chosen faculty.

However, it really does depend on where you go for it. I did not do my correspondance through a presitigious institution so if you are doing distance ed. through a university, that is probably a lot better.

I have heard this was an issue.
In my case it would not be cumulative to advance a degree, but rather to be certified.

      This part certainly sounds appealing.

i believe that the university of phoenix is the only nationally accredited online university... and because of that they're pretty damn expensive. i think it's something like 9k a semester.

i've actually done some of the course work for some of the upper level business courses and it's really tough stuff. so you're getting your money's worth.

I would suggest trying to take online courses from a university that has a "regular" brick & mortar progaram as well. This would probably be more marketable than on online only university.

      Good luck!

      Thanks guys.
Yaa know Education should be free like in California.
Why would a system not promote education?

Oh yaa. Too much military upkeep to consider.

I am doing correspondence for Spanish right now, and I really don't like it. It's ironic, too, Spanish was my favourite class last year (I changed schools to one that doesn't offer it), I finished with 98% and never had homework because I'd always finish it in class.

But now... wow, I usually leave it until the end of the day, if I even feel like getting around to it, and I'm behind. It's harder for me to grasp the concepts and rules of the language because I am my own teacher. I don't get to practice my skills (which are very well off for my age/grade level) with anybody else, which is terrible. Correspondence is the equivalent of going into a History class, the teacher handing you a textbook, and telling you to get to business and that she wants you to finish all the questions/tests/exams by the end of the semester.

Not recommended if you have no prior knowledge to what you're doing. I'm lucky that I completed Spanish 9 and 10 with very high As.

You make a very good point.
It sounds soo appealing to work around your schedule. But what that really means is procrastinate until I have to do it.

I really am having second thoughts...I don't know.
My work would make it difficult foe a commute.
Maybe I will toss a quarter.

Fair enough. I'm pretty anti-GWB, but I appreciate your perspective (how PC is that??).

Well maybe if both parties worked in the same mind set as you, we would not have such partisanship!?
