My first guitar

Should I get an Acoustic or Electric.I don't know a thing about guitars, so I want to know which one I should get to learn the basics with.I plan on starting a band with a few of my friends, and I figure that even if that never happens, guitar is a nice skill to have.Oh yeah, and if we do start a band, I will use an electric guitar.I just want to know which one is good for begginers.

I really have no idea, but I would choose an electric guitar You plug it to an amplifier and you can play it as loud or as low as you can... Loud would be my choice(disturbe the neighbors)....

Yeah, but I don't know of many people that started with an electric guitar. Loud is good though.

As far as I know it shouldn't be that different to start out with an electric guitar, in contrast of an acoustic one... Give it a go...if it doesn't work out there's always ebay..

Electric would probably be better for a beginner... It's easier to play and is a lot more versatile.

not to mention much more fun, and loud. You'll learn quicker on an electric.

I know, you can make one! My friend made an great electric guitar out of a old vcr case.

Yes an electric guitar is easyer to begin with, but if you learn first in an acoustic you can move easaly to electric, the oposite is a litlle harder(although not very much)

Yes, the action on an electric is much easier, but most instructors would rather you learn on an acoustic. But hey, you just can't do those cool riffs on an acoustic!

Yeah, Lenny Kravitz won't sound right on an acoustic. Get a acoustic electric.

You could always get an aucostic pedal or something. I would say go for the electric.

If you want to learn guitar, you should start on an acoustic. The strings are stiffer and the only sound is from the guitar itself. When you eventually move onto electric, the strings will seem like butter and it will be easy to play. Plus, you will learn to rely on your fingers and good technique for your sound, instead of effects that come with electric. If you do choose electric, you need to know what you want from your setup. What type of sound do you want? Alot of factors come into play: make and quality of guitar (they are just like cars, different models, prices, quality, etc...). Single coil or humbucking pickups? Active or passive? These all make a difference in your sound. The sound an amp makes: Peavey, Marshal, Crate, Fender all have different sounds to them. And they all come in different sizes and models, too. And don't forget about effects: delay, chorus, compression, distortion, overdrive, and many others are out there. The last thing you want to do is lay down a wad of $$$ on the first guitar and amp you come across, then get it home and find out it sounds nothing like you wanted it to. If and when you do decide to pick up the electric guitar you may want to find and talk to other players. Tell them your influences and what type of sound your looking for in shopping for equipment. Country? Blues? Death metal? Different types of music will call for different variations of equipment. And remember, this all costs a bit of $$$. It would be great if you could borrow someone else's guitar for awhile to see if you really want to invest your money and time to learn. Of the many people who play guitar, there are many, many others who picked up a guitar, but gave it up because it wasn't as easy as they thought it would be. The guitar and equipment end up in the closet or basement or sold for a fraction of what the person paid for it. I didn't mean for this to turn into a novel, but when I started to play 17 years ago, I made all the mistakes. Hopefully, my input will prevent you from doing the same.

both are good, i started with an electric i loved it. so many different sounds. acoustic is good too, because you can take it anywhere and play it without having to find a outlet or carry around the amp pedals and patch cords. if you think your just goin to be sittin inside playin it then i would go for an electric. acoustic has a certain sound hat you cant get with though and its great. p.s. if you get an electric anything under 200$ can. new will fall apart in 2 months!!

He probably wants to play punk so he should just get the cheapest stuff out there, beat the HOLY SHIT out of it, put a thousand stickers on it, learn G and F accords, and then repeat them indefinatly in some varying tempos, and then sing some good charlotte.

I started with electric, and I'm fine with it, I don't think it'll really matter too much, but if you're starting a band, might as well go straight out electric *cough* Its better anyways *cough* Guitar is super fun, and takes up a lot of time, so whatever you get, have fun

I first got an electric guitar. I found myself turning up the amliphier and zoning out to the wammy bar and all the disortion - LOUD! The acoustic I took more seriosly. Which may be benificial in the long run if you are just learning - then move onto an electric. Twisted Sister..... Who are you? where do you come from? Are you listening to me? Im looking to play some papa roach, red hot chilie peppers, skillet, metalica, acdc, and nof.x. Basically a variety of things.All I want to do is pretty much turn up the amp and play till my fingers bleed.But, that tis a while away...Anyway, me and my friends are going to form a band.So we all ready have a bass guitarist, a drummer, and a lead guitarist.But what about 2 lead guitarist?What do you think of that?I don't know if that will work or not..But my friend wants to join, and he is getting a guitar for his b-day also...

A whammy bar will really fuck up your tuning unless you have one of those lock things at the top of your neck. I would instead suggest a whammy pedal fom digitec. Then you can play stuff as high as Jack's solo at the grammys, or as low as the Seven Nation Army bass line. I like Skillet. Good band, saw them live.
