Seri and you other scientists--Question about magnetism.

You know my job and how redundant it is and you know that I'm on the computer all the time, so my wrists end up killing me by the end of the day. Well, I was in Walmart the other day and I saw some really pretty bracelets (there is a point, bear with me). Aside from being nice to look at, they were 'therapeutic ' bracelets. Apparently they have little magnets in them. I bought them mostly because I liked how they looked, and I figured what the hell. The 'therapy part' can't hurt, I suppose. So I wore one to work that night. Having had little experience with magnets (and even less trust in merchandising tactics), I didn't know what to expect, but they actually work! Very well, in fact. Not only did I not have any pain while wearing the bracelet, I actually felt a sort of soothing energy in my wrist.

Could you (or anyone for that matter) explain how putting tiny magnets into bracelets helps to ease the pain? And what was the energy I felt? I'm thinking that it has something to do with the iron in your blood, but I'm not sure. I'm no scientist. That's your department.

There is no proof that magnet therapy works.
It has been around since the early 1900's. The theory was that the magnetism affects the iron in your blood. There is just one problem, the iron in hemoglobin is NOT magnetic.
Personally, I don't like to keep a lot of magnets around, they are bad for computer disks AND credit cards!

I suspect what might be happening in your case is that wearing the bracelet is causing you to reposition your wrists slightly.

Like you, I sit at a computer all day. Make sure you have proper wrist support and that your workstation is level with your elbows.

Could possibly be the placebo effect. The energy feeling, perhaps, is simply from concentrating on that part of the body (ever notice that before? I have). I really dunno.

We all produce our own bioelectric and magnetic fields, its tiny of course. I am unsure how the bracelets would ease pain and such, one of my friends had one and told me to put it on, I had it on for about 5 minuts and had to take it off, it was weird, felt like it was throwing me off balance made my hand then arm and right side of my body feel weird... So it probably alters your natural field. The high gauss fields at work throw me for a loop too, I dont like to be around those machines when they are on. Big frikin electromagnets...

hehe I havent used a floppy disk in ages...

True, it can alter your electircal field, but to really have any effect you would need field strengths in the teragauss range.
      Something like a super-MRI

Well, I have an anti-technological field. My friends and I used to joke about it, but now it's not a joke. We're totally serious. Everywhere I go, lights go all wiggy and computers crash. I think I'm the best means of National Security... just throw me in the way of an oncoming missile or enemy aircraft and my field will mess up their navigation.

Maybe that in conjunction with the tiny magnets in my bracelets contributed to the lack of pain in my wrist. Or it could have all just been in my head. I am a diagnosed crazy bitch after all.

That was the second time you have said you were a 'diagnosed crazy bitch'.

LOL. It was something someone said to me awhile ago. He said I wasn't allowed to visit him anymore because his roommate thought I was crazy.

      BOO!

It's true, the body does produce tiny electic and magnetic field. However, SeekerDave already put it right. There is no proof at all that these devices work. There have even been experimens on similar effects where you could switch the magnetic field on and off without the notice of the person affected by it, and there was no difference for the person between "field on" and "field off".
      Sleep well and prosper.

As many of you already know, water is slightly repelled by magnetic fields.
Have any of you seen the video in which they levitated a frog in an extremely strong magnetic field?
I bet that sucker had some visions

Yeah no proof, I still feel funky around strong magnetics though.
