Unbelievable... Bill in US Congress Proposes Draft

Have you guys heard this? From all I can tell it's true: twin bills (H.R.163 and S 89) have been introduced into the US Congress, "To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes."

it's just a modified selective service deal... meaning this doesn't really effect you ffx-dreamz because you're a dude and dude's gotta sign their life away to the gov at 18 anyway. :mrgreen: regardless, i wouldn't mind if a cutey like escapist was covering my back in battle. :wink:

This probably wouldn't affect me, either. I'm half-blind and am renowned for illnesses, including juvenile rhumetoid arthritis, heart irregularities, and sudden onset of near paralysis. But I still get really freaked out by the idea...

Bush and his henchmen will never let this pass. They know that people will support war as long as they aren't personally involved.

A very interesting read! I hope it gives you some comfort. I, myself, am not worried about the draft. As Baconmastermind said, the President (or any politician, for that matter) knows American support will drop significantly should young men and women be called up for draft duty. :)

But...

Yea that bill won't pass.

The clear and present danger clause of the current draft would be as far as civilians will want it to get to a real draft.

If such a bil is even in place it would make you wonder how thin spread our troops are now and also what they would have on the back burner.

Honestly, I don't want the draft to be instituted. I don't want someone who has been forced into the military to cover my back. They aren't totally committed to the job. Who would really, if they had no choice in the matter?

Like I said before, military isn't for everyone. It's not a slam against them. It just not for them, and there isn't anything wrong with that.

well you see... bills are introduced to the house of represenatives... bush doesn't really have any power until the bill is passed by them (which it won't be). :mrgreen:

Yea if you want to call someone stupid you should check who proposed the bill. Which is rangel for anyone who lives in New York who wants to call him up and tell him hes stupid. Also want to point out he is a democrate who voted against the war. He thinks if everyone is drafted we wont go to war unless its very important. Though I agree with everyone here and think its a stupid idea.

I believe a bill of that nature will pass. And there is really nothing the people can do. The president has the power to create and change around previous executive orders as he see fits. Anyway they need to increase the military because we do not have enough troops if we are going to occupy Iraq till time indefinate. Eventually there will be a permante Base there just like our bases in Germany, Japan, France, Puerto Rico, and other countries too many to mention. Anyway when we go to war with North Korea we will need the additional manpower.

Lol don't forget Russia, China, France (especially France), Iran, various other nations in the Middle East, and basically any other nation that American deems 'a threat to democracy', cause that's the only way to run a country!

But to force 18-year-old girls out into military service overseas (or into a bunker with 25-year-old male comrades, for that matter) would be the most insane bullshit ever. It takes about 2 braincells to figure that out.

The bases in Germany, Japan and others that Switch mentioned are not permanent. We are there at the invitation of their goverments. If they asked us to leave, we would and in my humble opinion, we should. Maybe I'm wrong, but I consider many of these countries to be perfectly capable of defending themselves.

Charles Rangel and Fritz Hollings are men with a fear-mongering agenda. They know the draft is not needed. They're just out to make some head's turn and get a buzz going. It's the art of real politicks!

I agree with Alric. Charles Rangel is an idiot and doing nothing to help the Democratic party, which seems to be so out of touch these days.

I can only see the Draft being reinstated if we're looking at a war on a massive scale, like World War 2. We're not any where close to that. We have plenty of volunteers in the Armed Services. If they were so badly needed in one place, then they'd certainly be pulled out of the many areas where they are not needed.

that doesn't really add up. the president has no say on the bill passing congress... the people elected their congressmen and if the people don't want the bill the congressmen won't push it in order to save their jobs. the only thing bush can do is pass or veto the bill...

Agreed, Patriot is th only Combat MOS that allows females to be in the unit.

I can remember when the draft was abolished in 1973 and can remember signing up for selective service in 1979.

Daeraug has made the best point. You would rather have a volunteer that believes in what he is doing watching your back.

I am a little concerned with some of our reservests though. Many of them got into the reserves just for the paycheck. Now they are on the frontlines in Iraq.

Oh well, our army is now in the finest shape it has ever been in. Enlistment standards are higher now than when I was younger. Back then, they would take about everyone including highschool dropouts and people joining to avoid a prison sentance.

Enlisted men now are expected to have a diploma or GED, officers are expected to have a college degree.

Oh well, I'll stop after this:
I don't think there will be a draft again. If America herself were ever threatened with an invasion on our soil, I think the recruiting office would be so flooded that they would have to turn half of them away.

If I remember right, Finland (yay) has something like this, but it only applies to men.

It's like a choice of one year of social work or two years of the army. But it's not like the Finnish army does anything anyway.

Damn it! I'm 18! Aren't you exempt if you're in college? I hope so, cus I'm to much of a softy for war.

As far as I know, they won't take people in college.

As Seeker pointed out, a lot of Reservists and Guardsmen are in Iraq. We had a group of reservist infrantry with us in Iraq. A few were old active army guys, but a lot were college students that joined the reserves for money. They never expected to be in Iraq. Now some of them are dead, and injured. It a shame, because I used to eat and joke with these guys.

The humanity...where is it going? Where are we taking it all? All I can say that I haven't said 200 times before: It that it is political stuff like this, where many times lives are sacrificed by seeing the big picture, but not the individual one(Being unable to see the forest for the trees), that makes me ashamed to be a human, that makes me want to seize to exist, just cause I cannot stand what we are doing to ourselves and to our world.

Actually its a little more deeper than that Spicefiend. Switch is right in regards to the US being a permanent occupying power to those countries. That Pact was initatiated after WWII by the United Nations Security Council. Check em out!

Wow you didn't know that the President can create Executive Orders or Directives as he see fits. He doesn't need Congress to pass a bill. He doesn't need anyone, the Presidentail office has given itself solemn power over all administration within all houses of government. The Constitution means nothing.

The checks and balances are still there, and if you passed the test then I don't need to explain it. He doesn't have that much power as your saying though it has grown a lot over the years. If the president ever crossed the line he would get smacked back across in a second.

For this conversation though, he is right, the president has no say on the bill at all untill after its passed.

Well, I did say I could be wrong. Dp you know the name of this pact or perhaps the number of the UN Resolution? I'd be really interested to know because what you said makes little sense. The US an occupying force in Germany and Japan? Occupying... meaning to sieze or gain control of.

I don't think that's quite right, but if you have a name or link I could look at, that would be great.

Actually that's pretty much what it is. In the sense that 'occupying' means to control territory and policies of. The U.S. after WWII set up puppet governments everywhere, especially in Japan and Germany to make sure they will be democracies and basically imperialist strongholds against communism. But its not that they have much choice, imagine Uncle Sam letting Germany and Japan alone, they would have rebuilt their militaristic system up and came after everyone again.

Drafting females into the military? Yeah, at least I'm gonna have company (of that nature.) Now I'll need to control myself so I won't get dishonorably discharged.

I don't think it will pass. Like someone said. It would be suicide for bush or for anyone to pass a bill like that. Besides I don't think Iraq is a valid reason to start drafting. If it was over American Soil, then yeah, but for Iraq?! Pfft.

Also some just arent fit to be fighters in the battlefield. I think it's very wrong to force someone to do something that they are not fit for. I feel like they are just sending people to their deaths. I'll comment on this some more later.

It's less than a deal you make it out to be. Although Finland probably isn't going into battle anytime soon, their country functions perfectly fine with the choice of three years social service or one in the army (if I remember right). It's not unbelivable, most U.S. citizens are like "omg government gives me resources and supplies to live, and now I have to actually get off my lazy ass and give something back!!!". Fair deal if you ask me.

Although, I might not be one to speak. It is really doubtful that I will ever be drafted. Despite what most people think, drafts are not totally random. Some people are put in a higher "priority" than others. Being a only child, with alot of my family in the military, I will probably only be drafted in a very serious and urgent situation.
