Yeah, I heard that on NPR while at work this morning. Exciting news!
cool! let's live there
mucho mas birthdays :P
omg fuck the [new] tongue smiley :wtf:
Yeah, and if there are some low-primal organisms, that seem to show resistance, we'll blast them away!
Hate to burst the bubble... its twenty light years away. Even going to the nearest star outside our solar system will take a stupidly long time. The universe is such a ridiculously large place...
But still... pretty good that scientists have found an equivalent place.
God, I almost hope they don't find life. Especially if its evolved life. If they somehow found a way to get there by warp speed or something, (yeah, I know... Too much Star Trek) then whatever creatures they found there would be dissected and tortured by teams of Scientists just to see how they work. And if its advanced life, like us, more than likely the gov't really would try to destroy them.Quote:

Chaos, I'm sure you haven't watched too much Star Trek, because if you would have then you wouldn't be assuming such things. Remember all those alien fleets with enormous armadas of gunships capable of annihilating anyone to stand up to their might? I doubt they'd let some puny Earth government even close to their energy-shield surrounded planets. :content:
It is interesting news. But it sucks I will probably not be living at the time humanity can reach it.
20 light years for you earthlings... not for us! :alien:Quote:

what if there was life on that planet and they looked just like us? What if they are here now and visiting and have been for years? How would we know if they looked like us?
wooo, weird!
Anyways yeah, I saw that this morning on yahoo. You think they would've come up with a better name...go figure
Exactly what I was thinking. Damn... I was always thinking I was born at the perfect time, with all this technology blooming and what not. But now... crap, I wish I was born a few years from now and see how this planet discovery turns out. Oh well... maybe I'll just get to live 120 years, and I'll still be able to see what happens.
Sounds neat.
*plays war of the world music*
I'm surprised they found this with the equipment they have now. Too bad the Terrestrial Planet Finder project was canceled or I'm sure we would find a lot more of these Earth-like planets in the next few decades. Though I think we should spend some resources terra-forming Mars, since it's actually probable that we'll be living on it someday.
This era really does not have much use for astronomy. In the past astronomy was used for navigation and was valuable to humanity, and astronomy will be possibly used in the future for space exploration. For now, it's just a science of curiosity.
I think it's very important, though. Like you said, the information gathered may not be of much use for this era, but many of us have to think about the world our children are going to grow up in, and their children. Such a science of curiosity could prove to be a "science of the continuation of humankind," in the not-to-distant future. It's best to get as big a head-start on it as we can, don't ya think?
almost makes you wish for another cold war.
Who can get to c first?
Quick, develop!
Wouldn't it be something if they found evidence of life on another planet, in our lifetimes! That would be so cool; just about the most significant discovery in history. I doubt we'll get around to travelling there for quite a while, so they'll be safe.
Joe Satriani is from there... for sure.
