      Waking Life

I just saw this movie and was amazed. It was such a good movie. It starts off kind of odd but eventually progresses and turns into a movie about lucid dreaming. It gets slightly less interesting at some parts, but even at those parts the animation is just so facinating to watch it doesn't even matter. I highly recommend this movie to everyone on this forum, if you can't find it to rent by you I just found the dvd on www.half.com for only $6(brand new!) and I just purchased it myself.

I've seen it several times, and think it is truly a great movie. I've been wanting to purchase it for a while, thanks for the tip...

P.S A couple suggestions, for your sake:

1.When you are not sure if a topic has been created use the search option. It is better to add to this topic, than to create a whole new topic about the same thing.

      2. If you appreciate your life, don't bump topics, or Paperdoll will eat you alive...
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

Personally I really liked the way the animation was always moved around. It gave you some nice eye candy throughout the whole movie, especially in some of the earlier lectures that arn't as exciting. I also though it was really cool how the entire movie was shot live action and then drawn on top of (check out the special features).

Well I saw an older topic relating too it, but thought that it deserved a new one.

No one had responded after almost two days and I wanted some discussion, since this movie deserves it.

I'll use one of my teacher back in high school's favs: Well you thought wrong!!!

No, but really, the movie is great and deserves a bunch of discussion, but if people are not discussing it, there might be a reason behind it. In case you want to discuss it more throughly, I suggest www.imdb.com. You look up the movie and it will have an active message board about it...

I'll humor you, but just becuase I saw it again yesterday:

This movie is fucking great...the guy on the car with the loud speakers, the four guys lead by adam goldberg, and the guy that sets himself on fire are my favorite segments, but the whole movie is really fucking great

      Happy now?

here is something to discuss: what is the movie about? is it a real movie or some kind of documentary? is it a drama, comedy or what?

I haven't seen it but I'd guess it's about this:

      i'll humor you as well...

the movie basically proposed theories and then tied them all together with dreaming and a possible afterlife... but once you see through that stuff it's just crap. brief moments of intellectual conversations are hardly enough to keep someone's attention for 90 minutes... they simply aren't. i enjoy a nice deep conversation but this was so played out and preprogrammed... no new ground was broken and nothing was suggested that changed my outlook on life. not only that, it was hypocritical. early in the movie the narrator’s distaste for politics and useless political stances was established through the dude on the loud speaker yet there was a gun control plug and even a scene where a form of communism/socialism was advocated by it's 'humbled' followers. what jargon! what rhetoric! this is the perfect movie for some pseudo intellectual to really get lost and "find himself" with.

but yeah... apart from the annoying visuals and lackluster plot it was ok.

sorry if that was harsh but i've heard most every theory presented so the movie seemed to drag on forever!

I know that the conversations might not be the most ground-breaking to ever be transmitted through film, but I do value each and every one of them. The fact that there might be contradicting thoughts, in my opinion, would not make him a hypocrite particularly. I think we all have contradicting thoughts, and mostly when one is exploring the subconcious. The movie also hints he is in the astral plane, and not just inside his head...

You are entitled to your opinion as muchas the next guy, and I shall respect that. I think that whether or not the ideas are new for one or not, they are developed pretty well. I don't think in it I will find myself, etc but it really is worth my attention as I really love philosophy and most of the contents are really truly interestingly presented. It's might not be the movie you want to see 20 times, but I think its worthy of being watched at least 1...or 2

well you see i never got involved with the movie due to it's theme. i saw the hypocracy, not as the main character's thoughts, but as the writer's attempt to make a political statement. plus i was kinda pissed when i wrote that... if you didn't notice.

I was pretty sure you were paperdollin' the review

I'm not sure that the writer was trying to make a specific political statement and nothing else. I think he was rather trying to present many views about many subjects, some interlapping and even contradicting others. If it was only one character that said it all then I would say it was hypocrytical , but since its many characters then it is easy to contradict or show the different stance on a same subject...

Should I feel stupid for liking this movie and thinking that some of the views expressed within are insightful? What is wrong with thinking that? Am I a pseudo-intellectual for finding the movie interesting...?

What is insightful? Isn't it usually a relative term? Or, what is "real" enlightenment? Because I would like to watch some "real" insightful movies (seeing as they are so hard to find).

did this movie actually make you think about your situation and who you are? yes, it had insight but the movie itself was bad... yes, it had ideas but it was executed poorly. movies with insight are hard to come across these days but when you find a movie with something to say and it's interesting to watch you'll have a good movie in my eyes. -- again, i was pissed at something else when i wrote that so please don't take it in. you're not a pseudo intellectual if you liked it... i just think it could have been sooooooooooo much better if it was tied together with some substance rather than a misunderstood dream. the movie was basically information spouted off in an aesthetically pleasing order to tug the viewer along while keeping an ambiguity. i just didn't feel anything after it was over... indifference is not the sign of a good movie to me. just me.

The movie hints that it is not a misunderstood dream, but he is not able to wake up because he is dead...

There is a segment when they ae talking that when we die we will leave the physical world and inhabit the astral plane or whatever do to so and so reasons. It says that the only difference is that you won't be able to wake up ever again...

There is not enough info in the movie to succesfully conclude that he is dead beyond doubt, but it is hinted that he is pretty stongly. Perhaps when we die we get to inhabit that plane listening to people talk and learning philosophies and such until we achieve enlightment and are able to move on to yet another plane...its an interesting idea, at least

yes we do. as in you and i who know some dream signs. i didn't know the movie was about dreaming until about 5 minutes into it, then i had it pegged. i can see how it might have been a mystery or questionable to someone who didn't know dream signs but i knew the who movie was a dream. i think that drew away from the mystery that they were going for. that also drew away from my enjoyment.

That has nothing to do with what you were arguing before, but nonetheless I will say that the fact that everything is a dream didn't change much for me. It being a dream isn't really something that will shock people when they learn of it, it is not an unexpected twist and the movie doesn't rely on it to be a good one.

The interesting concept of this movie are the conversations, and not the excuse that puts them all together and gives a purpose as to why they are happening. I don't think there was intended to be much of a mystery, in contrast to its real point: philosophy....

For me it did because I wanted to explore my dreams and learn how to experience lucid dreams, which has had a fairly substantial effect on my life.

The movie didn't claim that it was going to be more profound, more thought-provoking, or able to advance the human race in any way.

Take it for what it is: It is a nice movie about a person's dream. Its a collection of small short-tales and anecdotes told within a dream. It is deliberately weird and confusing. It has no narrative because that is how the writer, Linklater, wished it to be. Its an attempt to capture the feeling and the "vibe" of dreaming, with some philosophical musings about the nature of reality and the meaning of life, which are related to dreams. Nothing more, nothing less. Not all movies have to have gangsters, explosions or sex (which are featured prominently in the favourite movies you cited) 8) to have value.

But I'll admit it was a bit boring.
