Artificial intelligence on the right track

I am very interested in artificial intelligence, and I think that computers in a few years will be able to handle so much information a human brain is able to.
(They will propably not get consciousness, but they can be able to handle information as good or even better than a human brain.)

I just found a interesting artificial intelligence test, who can by tried here:

      http://y.20q.net:8095/btest

Here is one of my tests:

I am guessing that it is water?
      Yes , No , Close

      16. Is it smaller than a loaf of bread? Irrelevant.
      15. Does it have cash value? Yes.
      14. Can you eat it? Yes.
      13. Is it used in Oriental cooking? Probably.
      12. Would you find it in an office? Probably.
      11. Does it contain a lot of water? Yes.
      10. Does it contain a liquid? Yes.
      9. Do most people use this daily? Yes.
      8. Is it something you can wear? No.
      7. Do you clean it regularly? No.
      6. Is it very, very expensive? Irrelevant.
      5. Is it worth a lot of money? Probably.
      4. Does it come in different colors? No.
      3. Is it a metal? No.
      2. Does it shine? Probably.
      1. It is classified as Mineral.
      [/b]
Yes, it was water I was thinking about.

And by the way; here is a other AI program, who shall try to chat with humans in a way that it is easy to imagine that we are chatting with a human, and not a computer program.
You can try it here: http://www.a-i.com/show_tree.asp?id=115

Any viewpoints about artificial intelligence anyone?
Do you think the computers will be able to handle information in the same way a human brain do?
(I think it is possible, and that it may be possible already for about 10 years).
And the computer scientist Alan Turing had no doubt about the computers abilities already 50 years ago.
      Are you dreaming?

First of all, that first program you mentioned there is a very simple trick that involves a rigid set of previous input.
A far cry from the ultimate goal of AI

I feel it will be a looong time before we can truly match the human brain, but that being said, I believe we will break some incredible ground very soon.
Even if we can create an intelligence equal to eg. a pigeon ... that is already a massive breakthrough.

I have some ideas of my own that I'm developing on the side
      (I'm a software engineer)

Wow that is pretty good. I thought of fingernail and it got it right. So I thought of something harder and it got dung beetle right!

It had a problem with a dream though, it got it on the third guess. Said reflection, then sleep then dream.

Yes, that's why I started this thread; computer programs can act very intelligent, even if they not have consciousness.

I beat it with chatroom, a wallet and zipper. I also got it with them rings that go around a planet, it didn't even have that in its database.

I would have to say though, there is no intelligence in the program... It merely directs the program a different way, according to changing environment. Much like the fuel injection system on a car... It just monitors conditions, and adjusts to a pre-defined table of values.

I do agree though, that this can be refined to the point at which it would be very hard to distinguish the difference between the two.

The two programs you give as examples are some of the best A-I I have seen in a long time. I assume then, Human, that you have been interested in AI for some time. I am sure you would remember the program that came with Creative Lab's Sound Blaster cards for a long time called "Dr. Sbaitso". It quite remarkably interacted with a person, claiming it was a mental doctor there to help you. It would ask you questions, and return fairly intelligent responses. This program was quite old, and for DOS only. But the fact that they could do something that amazing more than 10 years ago shows that this technology can and will develop quite quickly. Stunning.

      Scarry almost.

Alan: Hi. My name is Alan.
      Me: I know that
      Alan: So you know
      Me: Yes I do
      Alan: Do you really?
      Me: I told you I did, didn't I
Alan: Oh... I don't remember you telling me I did did not I... right?
      Me: You are confusing me
Alan: Today, if you are not confused, you are just not thinking clearly.
Me: You are not thining clearly!!!
Alan: Why are you so negative?
      Me: Because I am dead
      Alan: Oh, I understand.[/b]

wow... that sounds just like a coversaton had with one of my friends the other day

But cool with the guessing game. got horse and carrot in first try... must be a lot of work behind it
A child's rhyme stuck in my head.
It said that life is but a dream.
I've spent so many years in question
to find I've known this all along.

allen sounds alot like alicebot, alice bot used to be free software that was sooooooo cool, so realistic, when i was first chatting with her i thought see was a real person fooling me,
try this site www.agentland.com and chat to the cybelle character down the side, she also is extremly realistic to talk to-the site also has heaps of cool downloads for chatterbots
sadly alice bots creator did what i always assumed he would and made the alicebot software cost $ so it is no longer available online altho i wonder if all the people who downloaded it in the begining still have it.
assume makes an ass out of u and me

The alan one says he is just a program more than once and I have even got answers like "I am not programmed with an answer to that" so I guess it would fail heh.

I don't think we have to worry about computers going crazy and killing everyone for a very long time heh.

I was reading in a norwegian magazine that some scientists think the computers will be a singularity already for about 20 years. That could also involve bad consequences; yes.
Unluckily, new technology can have bad effects if we don't are able to control it.

I see you are from Sweden.
Swedish and norwegian is similarly languages, so you could read the article here, if you are interested:

i was surfing the net and i came accross the www.agentland.com site, cybell said hi so i started talking to her thinking she was real, then when i asked personal qtions (age where she lives ect) she told me she was a computer, she was made from alicebots origonal freeware, it wasent that i started talking to alicebot thinking she was real(the site says she is not)
for awhile i had a palm pilot and i downloaded alice to that as well, but her name was ruby, everyone who spoke to her was amazed

AI is some really cool stuff, but can it also be dangerous like it is in MANY movies? what do you think??[/b]
well definatly not these chatterbots, they are just programs made to respond with the most suitable response, they have no conciousness other than that which the user thinks it has.

yea, i had read that article. it does not only take up A-I as a singularity, there is also some interresting stuff about combining A-I with the human brain if i remember right. For example it could give us the ability to store information just lika a computer, but inside our heads. We could also be able to think as fast as a computer.

      That's true.
But it was also a theory there about that the robots are going to be our enemies.
Because if the robots is going to be more intelligent than humans, we have no ability to stop them if they do something we don't want them to.

Ye, its a scary thought ... But wouldnt it be easy to add some sort of barrier that makes it impossible to hurt a human?

Sci sodding fi rubbish. No chance. This would be the worst case scenario:

Housecleaning Robot I shall destroy you with this ironing board. Hah hah hah.
Housecleaning Robot rolls towards women at a tremendously slow speed.
Housecleaning Robot prepare to meet your doom. Hah hah hah.
Woman presses "OFF" button on remote.
Housecleaning Robot No. It is getting darker. Help. Stop it.
Woman presses "RESET" button on remote.
Housecleaning Robot Hello, thankyou for buying the GIHOUSECLEAN 2000. Please give me a name with the onboard control keys.
