I LOVE sleight of hand - and all the more when I know how it is done. Bobo-style stuff just blows me away with the artistry of it all. I've learned a few tricks and rolls just as hand exercises, but they can be both fun and useful from time to time!

A late cousin was a professional magician. I "inherited" all his gear, books and tapes, which have been carefully preserved in case anybody else in the family develops an interest. My interest remains with the stuff involving pure skill.

GH should chime in on this - I seem to remember him mentioning being involved in stage magic.

cool, well i start this off with a simple one i learned to make a coin dissapear...

      You Need:
      a coin
the ability to snap your fingers (in other words click)
      an open sleeve

      Method:
place the coin on the backside of your hand in the center. raise your hand over the coin and snap your fingers, making sure the finger that comes off your thumb hits the coin backward in to your sleeve.

      Helpful Hints:
make sure your sleeve is i the correct position so when you hit the coin into it, it actually goes in instead of flying off or hitting your sleeve and ruining the illusion.
you may want to do more then one snap or a bit of hand waving above the coin first to distract them a bit.

      P.S. practice makes perfect

      Yeah! That's a fun one.

Two of my favorites are the French Drop and a Bobo coin manipulation I don't know the name of. The French Drop is classic, of course, made beautiful by proper misdirection. The magic is all in guiding the attention of the observer - though a skillful drop is also necessary.

The Bobo one is especially lovely because you can make coins disappear and reappear with a bare arm and one hand, at very close range. Describing it is kind of tricky, and it involves a lot of practice, so I'll forgo that. Besides, I wouldn't want to spoil the beauty of it for anybody who doesn't want to know how. Pushing this one to the limit, you can very convincingly produce a stack of coins, one at a time, from mid-air, having them seemingly appear in your fingertips. It is especially sweet because the line of sight issue is vertical rather than horizontal!

If you can, pick up the reprinted book by Bobo on coin manipulation, originally written around the turn of the last century. It is hands down my favorite book on sleights. The guy was a genius, and more than half of his stuff was pure, staggeringly adept skill.

I love seeing magic tricks, I know a few card tricks, which are not as good as the coin tricks, I also love a lot of Derren Browns work, although not conventional magic and more focussed on POS - It still facinates me

The French Drop can be found on the 'net with a quick search, easy enough.

Ten bux at Amazon will get you "Modern Coin Magic" in paperback, by J.B. Bobo: ISBN 0486242587

      You will never regret it!

      Found the french drop one.
But im starting to notice i allready know a lot of tricks from one book, or alot of the common one's
The book is called Shamanka and i follows a girl in a quest to find her parents after she finds a book of her fathers in her evil aunties atic. shes an illusionist and it tells some of the tricks. Id recomend it, not only did it give me a few magic tricks and some info like how to guide via stars but it also gave me a great read

Well, that certainly blows away David Blaine's heel lift levitation.

I'm not sure why, but the 'big production' magic stuff just never caught my fancy. This guy must be a newcomer, huh? Never heard of him.

Criss had his own tv show (Mind Freak) and I used to watch it and marvel at what he does.

Um, yeah. I hate to say this but that one was already debunked as being camera/editing tricks. It didn't happen that way live.

Anyway, pj is correct. For a few years I was a working "semi-pro" magician. I did close-up (mainly in the form of "table-hopping" at restaurants), parlor magic (lots of birthday parties, business dinners, library shows, Boy/Cub Scout functions, etc...)

I've done many stage shows as well. That's where most of my money was tied up as far as props go. I made a few of my more valuable props (such as an Asrah Levitation). My largest stage performance audience was for a little over a thousand people, at the local civic center auditorium.

Oddly however, since I got out of magic, I've pretty much given up on watching magic. It's like the magic's gone for me on some level. I still am in contact with several of my old magic friends. And amazingly, some of the members of the club I used to be in still talk about me and share some of the tricks I created back then.

I've created several and produced and sold a bunch of magic tricks when I was involved. I was also very good friends with a famous magic manufacturer and inventor (Jim Zachary aka Jim Z). He's well-known for his dice stacking routines and books. He also invented and produced the famous "Hot Rod" paddle trick, amoug many others.

It's funny, the very first time I attended the Central Florida Magic Club's meeting (as a guest), I performed the Hot Rod. I looked up to see every one siting there with huge grins on there faces. When I was done, several members pointed to Jim and said "That's the man who invented and manufactured that trick". That was awesome.

I really like magic cos it makes u think, but it's even better when u actually do it in front of people. It can be really funny just looking at them trying to figure somethin out when it is really just simple.

      P.S. I love coin tricks.

Oh yeah, that one's called the "Mexican Monte". I've got the packet with the red diamond, blue diamond and the green card that says "$14" and has a picture of a stack of money. But I've often done it with Aces/Jokers and an odd card. That one's always been a crowd favorite.

thats the trick revealed. It's kind of hard to learn because there are alot of hand sleights, but once you've learned it, its an awesome trick.
