Anime: Love it or hate it?

Lately I have been noticing a lot more anime. Whether it be t-shirts in hot topic, a random conversation I hear walking through school, or the avatars and signatures on DV. It seems to be becoming more known. My best friend is actaully addicted to it, it's the only thing he can actaully devote himself to.

I personally can't stand it, the plot, the animation, the arogant characters, the strange obsession with food, the seemingly normal people with god like abilities and skanky women in skimpy clothes, the facial expressions... and so on. This isn't an anime hate thread by any means, I just don't see the apeal. So i've decided to ask you anime fans, why do you watch it?

Because of the plot, the animation, the characters and so on.
Anime series have some fun plots, very enjoyable. The animation can be simple and enjoyable or seriously shaded and very well drawn to the extent that it really captivates too. Either way, I find it appealing. The characters are just like any fiction. Different anime is different just like different books or movies differ.

I suppose the one reason that stands out most is the animation style. It appeals to me. I find it well drawn and I've studied how to draw it but haven't pursued illustration and drawing quite yet myself. Once I do though, I'll be drawing anime.

Characters drawn in the anime style are generally more stylish and appealing to the eye. I do suppose that adds to the general interest.

Anime is great!! LOVE IT!! All the way lol

Its just so fun to watch, you forget all about reality (or at least i do) and it makes me happier. The facial expressions are priceless lol xD and the storylines are the best...especially in fantasy/action styled animes!

Perhaps, I suppose it's definately more opinion of what's stylish. I personally can't stand all the "pretty boy's" and in my opinion He-Man (lol...) has some better backgrounds and scenery. I guess to me a lot of anime just seems too polished and flashy... sometimes very flashy.

Not necessearily flashy, but flawless, in a sense. Characters can be perfect. Not a wrinkle or pimple, with perfectly flowing hair and skin of a perfect tone.

I guess that can be seen as "flashy", like you put it, but really...why not strive for perfection in fiction? There are also "grim" anime styles where characters are hardly flashy and there's plenty of depressing themes.

The one thing that stands out in anime series though is how drawn out actions can be. Sometimes it can get to the boring side when in some samurai related anime the warriors speak more than they clash swords and the battle takes 3 episodes, though lasting no more than half an hour in the fictional scenario, heh.

That's just one of the things one notices when watching anime by series.

Well Merlock, I have to thank you for making some solid reasons on your part. When I ask my friends why they watch anime they can't produce any actaul reason other than "BECAUSE IT'S FREAKIN AWESOME", and think i'm a moron for thinking otherwise.

I've seen some of the more darker anime shows. Though still, it's the animation and shallow plot that turns me off...

Funny you'd say that. The very example I provided above: about drawn out actions, is part of anime for the very reason that plots can be quite thick. The characters speak a lot and such interaction both reveals the plot further to the viewer (or reader, in the case of manga) and causes it to deepen.

Then there are more "action"-based anime, as far as I've seen. The kind that are just fun to watch and follow, rather than anything really deep.

After all, I don't think anyone would truly compare anime to, say, Tolkien's work (since we're comparing fiction here) or any number of legendary fictional series but it can indeed be quite enjoyable: be it just for fun or enjoying some well made anime with an intriguing plotline.

What anime(s) have you seen? It always seems that when someone doesn't understand why other enjoy anime, they haven't seen any good ones.

Sorta like judging english dramas using Borat.

I really enjoy anime, although I have to say it's probably already a little too mainstream now.

Ultimately for me, it's always been mainly about the plain Japaneseness of it.
I've always found something weirdly addictive about modern Japanese culture and anime happens to just be dripping with it.

      I chose "hate it".

      • Artistically speaking, the animation is lazy and sparse, the art design cliched and tired and the aesthetics devoid of any value.
      • Plot wise, most animes are a continuation of the same over-tried themes as last year's batch, and those that are successful, have their plotlines stretched to paper-thin dimensions. The characters are a hodge-podge of stereotypes and empty personalities, any facets of which are lazily pasted on with rarely enough thought put to the process.
      • Music wise, they are crammed full of disposable, worthless J-Pop crap.

So, yeah. I don't like them much.

Hmm, interesting. I probably haven't seen any of the shows your talking about then, I just remember seeing a few episodes my friend was watching that was unusaully 'dark' for anime. Can't say that I hate it all. Some Dragonball Z I actaully like, especially the movie Fusion Reborn. Though haven't found much else to interesting.

Identity X, I couldn't agree with you more. I too chose the hate option. All the characters look the same to me and I hate that upbeat japa-music. The only cool anime's are the really dark and depressing ones, but I only like them because of how much gore they can pack into a cartoon. Even then, I don't watch anime.

And this is from a kid who's school's second biggest number of ethnicity is asian.

      Boo anime.

If you say you hate all anime except for the few good episodes of DBZ, you clearly only have exposure to the crap they imported into mainstream television in the states. Like if you look into Lodoss (the first season, from 1990 - I haven't seen the second set from 1998 ), you'll find the animation is pretty nice, the music is decidedly not jpop crap, and the plot ain't that bad either. I'm sure everyone knows Evangelion too, which has a much deeper plot than, say, every american cartoon combined. And then there's the stuff that's genuinely funny, like GTA and Ranma. Noir is pretty decent too, and that one's more recent. It's a pretty big world, and unless you have exposure through someone who is a ridiculously huge fan, you'll only see the garbage that airs on the cartoon network here.

      Absolutely hate it

Probably because my older brother was way into it and would insist that I liked it, but it just confused and angered me.

All of you are saying its the same repetitive stuff but its not really. All animes are different with different styles.

I admit some anime (like dark styles ones) can really suck. But you've got to find a style your in to otherwise yeah, you'll think its crap.

But i respect your opinions, everyone is different
