One of the world's most-used pirate film websites has been closed after providing links to illegal versions of major Hollywood hits and TV shows.
The first closure of a major UK-based pirate site was also accompanied by raids and an arrest, the anti-piracy group Federation Against Copyright Theft (Fact) said today.
A 26-year-old man from Cheltenham was arrested on Thursday in connection with offences relating to the facilitation of copyright infringement on the internet, Fact said.
The arrest and the closure of the site - www.tv-links.co.uk - came during an operation by officers from Gloucestershire County Council trading standards in conjunction with investigators from Fact and Gloucestershire Police.
Fact claims that tv-links.co.uk was providing links to illegal film content that had been camcorder recorded from cinemas and then uploaded to the internet. The site also provided links to TV shows that were being illegally distributed.
Visitors to the site could get access to major feature films, sometimes within days of their initial cinema release. Recent links took users to illegal versions of the Disney/Pixar animation sensation Ratatouille as well as to most of this summer's blockbusters.
"Sites such as TV Links contribute to and profit from copyright infringement by identifying, posting, organising, and indexing links to infringing content found on the internet that users can then view on demand by visiting these illegal sites," said a spokesman for Fact.
The group's director general Kieron Sharp said TV Links was the first major target in a campaign to crackdown on web piracy.
"The theft and distribution of films harms the livelihoods of those working in the UK film industry and in ancillary industries, as well as damaging the economy," he said.
Roger Marles, from Trading Standards said sites such as TV Links allowed people to break UK copyright law.
"The 'users' are potentially evading licence fees, subscription fees to digital services or the cost of purchase or admittance to cinemas to view the films," he added.
The British Video Association estimates that at least £459m was lost to the video, film and TV industries due to piracy in 2006.

Thank pirating god for alluc.org
I don't get why it's illegal to distribute TV show recordings for free...
Motion pictures - sure but why TV shows that are already free, broadcast on public TV channels?
Of course it's illegal. You have to pay liscense, in order to watch TV. Well, atleast in Denmark. By using TV-Links, you can through some TV removal and things, watch TV on the internet, without paying for it, which certainly is illegal.
So, if an english person watches american TV, he should pay double liscense, or get some bonus pack stuff from his TV service provider, which gives him american TV, or something like that.
Before somebody starts saying "Well he was only linking...", then I must say, that it's still illegal. It's like a person, who makes people buy drugs at his friend's house. He might not be selling drugs himself, but he gives people a source of drugs.
And why is that :P ?
you can score drugs at the corner of York Road and Grover Street in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England SS1 2BL
Did I just commit a crime?
Its a shame that, was the best of its kind. I guess its back to torrents then...
No you just gave some info.
Tis a shame to bad there are hundreds of more sites where that came from.
Good Luck Government busts your asses but it's still not even worth it.
what about a link
drugs here

You're doing it wrong. You have to put people in contact with the drugsellers, you have to be affilliates of them.

Viva La Resistance!!!
This isn't a drug thread people.
Arrr crap, now I have to use blurry youtube for Heroes eps :(
Thanks ma'am :P
and heroes has a video section that plays back all of its episodes. a day after. its on nbc.
veoh sucks! they make you download this crap player that doesn't even work more than a few minutes
This might sound like a stupid question, but why don't any of you watch these shows on a television, you know, the way it was intended :P?
As for Heroes, I work on Monday nights, so it's either record it via VHS (and have to take time to fast-forward through commercials), or watch it on the computer. As for some of my other shoes, I don't have cartoon network.... :P
And, I also use DivX. You can usually find more clear videos/shows through that.
Sweet I just discovered that the brand new mp3 player I bought is also a Tivo :D ...though...I don't watch any shows on TV, so that's sorta pointless. But at least I can stream movies from my PC straight to my TV now, that's pretty badass.
Oh, and I never used tvlinks for the TV shows, I used it for the collection of hundreds of movies it had! :P
NOOO!!! TV LINKS!!!
Damn the anti-Piracy... Greedy bastards want the money they make...
Seriously though... that sucks.
Please tell me if I've missed something, but it sounds to me like you're saying public channels could just as well make money if they allowed people to download shows off their site as making people watch it on their network.
They have to get people to watch it on their station so they can have ratings. The more ratings, the higher advertisers will have to pay to put their add in during a program. Advertisements are what drive the TV industry and if everyone were watching them without advertisements like they are on these sites, the networks will have less ratings. Therefore, the networks don't get as much money.
Anyway for those trying to watch Heroes you can here :D
http://www.cucirca.com/2007/05/27/watch-heroes-online/
I used to watch tv-links because I'm not in the U.S. so there is no possibiliity to watch these tv shows in Japan...That and why watch it live on the networks time schedule with commercials when you can download, pause, import into iPods, and watch it on trains and the like whenever you please?
Do you really need to ask why? C'mon now...ef helping them sell auditing shares... let them do more product placement, or work on selling special edition DVD box sets if they want their meaningless money that badly.
i got loads of them PM ME ill give them too you
