      The Beauty of Music

      Hello everyone

I don't know about any of you but i have been listening to music almost my entire life and i find it to be one of the most important aspects of my life. It truly does have a big impact on how i feel, what i do and what i intend to do. Music can be very inspiraing and motivational. I find that it really is one of the best things that was ever created. It has expanded so much and there have been some great pieces of music created. There is alot of rubbish being created in the present day, but that is only one aspect and it is only my opinion. I love music and to be honest it has had a huge impact on my life.

What are your thoughts on music, what does it mean to you?

Besides my family, music eclipses every other facet of my life. Writing, playing, listening, analyzing, and just plain enjoying it. I really can't stand the stuff they pump out on the radio, though. You have to know where to look for the real stuff!

Or they haven't built the right radio station yet. Either way.

Is there someone out there playing Spoon, Sparklehorse, Elbow, Doves, Mercury Rev, Grandaddy, Built to Spill, Super Furry Animals, Heat Miser, Pavement, or anything actually interesting? Because I just keep hearing the same old vapid pap over and over. Most stations playing new music have tiny playlists, and people are exposed to such a narrow range of music... usually the least interesting range in my opinion.

I like having a network of friends with similar tastes I can share new finds with.

Music is the only thing I've been doing consistently through my entire life. I became enamored with guitar at the tender age of 5, and actually started learning to play a year later. I studied classical guitar through grade skewl and then discovered Rock. I started composing in my early teens and have never stopped.

Just about every genre of music holds something special for me, from the simplest folk to the most complex fugue. Especially dear to me are Celtic, African and Nordic region folk music and a lot of the 'Art Rock' out of the 1970's. (Yes, Genesis before Gabriel split, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, etc...)

I started seriously studying jazz about a year ago, and have since fallen in love with what my parents (WWII generation) used to know as Popular Music - and I'm in awe. My generation picks up a guitar, learns a couple two-finger bar chords and gets up on stage. Their generation had to understand not just basic harmony and structure, but also embellishments, alterations, passing chords and notes, and also be able to IMPROVISE - I mean creating melody that makes sense with the harmony on the fly, rather than just showing off slick chops.

Jazz isn't the end-all, but I can see it occupying my attention as far as my instrument is concerned for a very very long time. From a performance perspective, it has an incredible lot to offer; an amazing range of stylistic variation to explore and a tremendous depth of history to learn.

Music. It is what I think about and what I do any time I am not engaged in meeting my responsibilities. What it means to me is mysterious and profound, but very very important... important enough to have dedicated most of my life to it.

FM radio is terrible, AM is better (little music, but lots of good talk shows). I need music constantly or else I feel weird. That's part of the reason I hate school, theres no music besides band. I feel that it is extremely important to improv, because its a way to be creative and express yourself with little though. Music is magical!

      Wow... that's so true.

Another thing to tie into my theorising of reality...
You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.
