      Ouija boards

Why do Ouija boards work? I have one, and I used it one night with my two sisters. We lit a candle because I heard that's generally what people do. It worked right away--didn't move fast, but definitely moved and landed decisively--and all our answers were coherent. None of us was purposely manipulating the board.

I just don't buy the theory that it's actually a spirit moving the platform through your fingers. (If spirits were real and they could move things or possess people to move things, they'd rule the world!) However, if anyone has a really good argument for why it is in fact spirits, then go ahead.

But what I'm really interested in are other theories for how we got coherent answers when none of us were consciously moving it. We all TRIED to make our minds blank of expectations. When the last name was being spelled out, the first three letters were H-U-G, and we laughed skeptically at the word "hug," but then it was followed by an H for "Hugh." None of us expected that turn! It just puzzled me to no end.

Please share your opinion, even if it's just an idea!

I don't believe it's spirits either. My friends and I used to play with the thing ALL THE TIME, and we would always get these really crazy messages... once we got an entire history of some dude who died in WWII... well the fact of the matter is it was always me moving it. Your friends may say that they aren't moving it, but they are.

Okay, after I read your post, I just went and demanded my sister to tell me that it was her moving it. (I know it had to be her, my other sister is only 10.) She confessed. AHHH!!!!! To think I was fooled so easily. I asked her why, and she said because I had so much fun! Ahh, it's so true.

So EVERYBODY who has an "experience" with one of these things is just being tricked???

Not necessarily - some people contend that if the group as a whole expects a certain answer to appear, they may each subconsciously push it extremely slightly towards that spot, or even just have less resistance towards motion in that direction.

This sort of phenomenon can be seen using a hula hoop and a group of friends - suspend the hula hoop above your heads, and make each person make a 'gun' sign with their hands, so that the hula hoop is resting on ONLY the index fingers of each person in the group. Then, try to lower the hula hoop without anyone losing contact. Invariably, everyone will blame everyone else for keeping the hula hoop up - the mysterious upwards force results from each person trying to keep in contact with it and pushing it upwards very slightly.

Another cool application of this general concept is the magic trick involving holding someone's hand and wiggling it about gently when looking for a hidden object. When the person knows where the object is, they will have less resistance to motion in the general direction of the object. People with sensitive hands can take advantage of this to locate hidden objects by 'reading their mind' while just holding their hand.

Chris Angel once did that trick at a car dealership - he had one of the dealers hide a set of keys in one of their thousands of cars, and then walked around holding his hand for a few hours until he was sure he had the right one, from the tiny changes in resistance.

I don't know what thegnome is saying, but Chelita, I wouldn't generalize my and your experience to everyone's since that's a risky thing to do with anything... At the end of the day, even though I always moved it, it was always a hell of a lot of fun. And sometimes I even tricked myself into believing certain stuff. One time, my friends and I were doing the ouija board in my very creepy attic at home, and even though I was totally moving it, it still creeped us all out - and eventually we all started to hear noises. That night I slept over at their house because my parents were out of town and I was convinced that we had awoken some sort of spirits.

Yeah, that's what I meant... we asked its first and last name and got "Erik Hugh." My sister admits she made it up.

I agree with Mes Tarrant that it is a lot of fun, so you should try it, but don't be overly credulous like I was! I guess you can still get pretty freaked out even if you know it's not real. Like watching a horror movie or playing a game in the woods at night.

That's really interesting about the subtle hand movements. I bet that has something to do with it--it's probably not always one person who's controlling it.
