Tell me how close you've been to death

Of course, no one reading this has died, and this would make for an interesting topic, so tell me about the closest you've ever been to dying.

I've been about 10-20 yards away from death. I was in Orlando, FL, swimming with my friends. We saw some really dark clouds to our left, so we went over to this bar near the pool. The Weather Channel was on. We talked to the guy behind the counter. He said that it storms like clockwork almost every day at about 2:00. Just as he was telling us this, about 10-20 yards to the left of me, out of the corner of my eye, BOOM! This huge bolt of lighting just blasts from outta nowhere. The second it hit I dropped down below the counter out of flinching. We ran inside after this.

Edit: Hey, come to think of it, my dad almost got struck by lightning too. But he was like feet away from the bolt. I think he was somewhere between 4-7 years old when he came close to lightning. Huh, guess it runs in the family...

I almost drowned once. My mom saved me. I was probably around 10-11 years old and we were on a family vacation. We were swimming in the hotel pool and playing football in the water. Someone threw me a long, high pass and jumped and propelled myself through the water to catch it. It's kinda confusing to me now, but I remember taking a breath except I was underwater - so I got a lung full of water. And I sunk like a stone. I couldn't move, and I kept falling deeper and deeper. I thought I was going to die, and then someone grabbed my bathing suit and pulled me up. That was scary as hell and I'll never forget that feeling!

Probably the old "STOP" yelled by my father as I step back from the road.

Well, I came into this world dead, well not breathing at least (I literally hanged myself with my umbilical cord). I've been pretty lucky since then though, and I can't really recall a time when I was in a life-threatening situation, despite my soft side for doing crazy stuff :P...

I almost died at birth, plus when I was born I needed loads of medication. Nothing else really, except this time I feel off a climbing frame but nothing that bad though.

Anyway, I'll just copy+paste my experience!

When I was in Vietnam, 20 crazy kongoes attacked me with AKM-47s. I think they threw 3 fragnades and then shot a lot. Fortunately, I grabbed a dead body, and covered myself, playing dead afterwards.

When I was 12 or 13 me and a friend were just out for a walk, and we happened to be going down a street that had some construction going on. Well a dirt clod with a piece of metal coming out of it fell and nailed(no pun intended) me right in the head. I actually didn't feel any pain, but I felt really light headed and I put my hand to my head and it felt really warm. When I looked at my hand it was covered in blood. Next thing I knew a girl I knew from school and her uncle came over and he put his sweater on my head to stop the bleeding. When the paramedics came by they said another 3 millimeters and it would've killed me.

I was on the bottom floor of a sinking cruise ship.... I stayed calm though.

We were on this boat ones, and I had to put down the anchor, and stupidly I got my foot wrapped around the rope attached to the anchor. Well when I chucked it in, it dragged me, but fortunately I managed to grab hold of the side rail, hanging on for dear life with my foot trapped. Fortunately the water made the anchor less heavy so managed to hang on for someone to come help me.

And about 5 minutes ago on of these huge speakers on my wall, which weighs a tonne just fell down and landed like 10cm from my head!!!!!!!

Suicidal attempts, have put me close to death before.

Aside from that, nearly drowning, and also nearly not escaping a bedroom in flames.

Oh, just remembered: I was almost hit by a car on two occasions. Once when I couldn't figure out how to use the handlebrakes on my new bike, and when I recklessly ran across traffic.

Very close, actually. My car did a 360 on the interstate while doing 70 mph.

I was also almost struck by lightning. Well, not really. But it came pretty close. It hit the footpath at the backyard. I was in the house.

when i was 8 i was walking on the path to our house and a huge icicle fell and passed within inches of my face.

When I first starting smoking weed, my friend had to pull me out of the path of cars several times. I've wisened up since.

I was white-water rafting. One of the rafts ahead of us was stuck on some shallows and so we thought we'd push them off, but we ended up hitting them sideways and the raft tipped over. I ended up on the side opposite the shore and couldn't get around, so when the raft started heading down-river, I just went with it (at the suggestion of the guide). The algae on the rocks caused me to slip eventually, and I ended up going under the boat.

It was probably scarier for the people watching than for me. Personally, I was very calm and made my way to the other side of the raft. I even paused in the middle and put my hand up to see if there was air there. Without conclusive evidence, I decided not to go up, and continued on. I made it to the other side of the raft, and by then a raft behind us had caught up and snagged onto the line on my raft.

I was a little more scared of what the outcome could have been after it had happened. :)

Back in high school, Death and I used to play racquetball every day. These days, though, we don't even talk on MSN any more. =(

Human Translation: Back in high school, during P.E. bullies in a gang named "Death" would pummel me with racquet's until I would pass out. The bullies required I stay in constant communication with them, in case they needed to sharpen their punching skills so we talked regularly on MSN, though we don't even talk on MSN anymore. =(

Not quite. Although I do remember having basketballs thrown at my head.

Very close.....so close that I reached it....and died...But I still hunt at night.

Anyway, I've also had NDE's. I dont want to get into them...but I have.

I was on the edge of losing consciousness when I was eight in the deep end of a pool. The edges of my vision were just blurred light and I kept coming up trying to get air, looking in the back door of the house and hoping someone would help me. They ran out and jumped in and saved meh. :boogie:

8 seems to have been a troublesome year for you, isn't that the age you also messed up your knee?

Closest I possibly came to death was when I was 6 or 7. On my way home from school I decided to cross at a corner that wasn't manned by a crossing guard. As soon as I neared the corner a big car came rolling up and the guy inside opened the passenger door and asked if I needed a ride to school. I backed away and said nothing. He closed the door and effed off.
Now scared, I dashed across the street and ran the whole next block. When I got to that corner the same guy pulled up, this time the driver's side door was right there. He opened it and asked if I needed a ride. I backed away again and glanced down the street, I could see my house only three buildings away. He moved forward and I moved back again. I guess I wasn't worth chasing down because he closed the door and took off. I dashed home and didn't cross alone again after that.

When I think back on it's really sobering to know my life could very well have ended then if I hadn't been the paranoid and anti social little brat that I was.

It doesn't sound too dramatic, but I've supposedly been very close to death...

Although I can't remember it at all, several people (even nurses in the hospital) told me about it.

When I was born, VERY prematurely (3 MONTHS too early), I got so ill that my skin turned into some shade of green :eek:, and because I was born so unbelievably premature, there was a huge chance that I'd become mentally or physically deficient in some way or another.

Now, because of this, and because they normally did not help people with such a huge premature birth, I actually got pretty close to being dead...

Luckily there was this very nice pediatrician ("childrens"-doctor), who thought there was still hope for me, and he's the guy that supposedly decided to help.

And so, there I went, with haste in a helicopter to another hospital, where I spent quite some time recovering and stuff...

And the best thing is: I survived, without mental or physical deficiencies...

And now, whenever I go to the hospital, some people who are still working there and who know me still talk about it as if it's a miracle... At which point I ask them who they are, exactly...

I know this isn't very on topic seen as though I'm not talking about myself here but my mum has tripped over infront of a bus and had to knock on the front window while trying to climb up it, crying. Lol

When I was younger I actually accepted a ride from a lady that looked vaguely familiar to me, but who at the time I had no real idea who she was. :shock:

i was swimming in a river alone with relatives and friends on the banks, coz i wanted to get a lil more swimming in before we went home, and i dove (i was doing breaststroke), and when i went back upm, a motorboat's propeller was inches from my head.

couple seconds, but when i was going down i heard the motor, but i didnt think the boat was coming this way...

the closest i have cme to death is when i was born which apparantely was quite sketchy!

Apart from that not much except for there was quite a high chance that i would never have been here anyway because my dad (when he was about 20) was driving on a road in the midlands somewhere and decided to overtake a lorry (in the dark).

as he was going past (around the middle he realised the dual carriageway had abruptly ended and it had become just a normal road (one lane one way the other lane the other way) unkown to him there was a right angle turn up ahead and suddenly another lorry came around this corner so there was a lorry on one side of him and a lorry on the other!

He then just got as close to the lorry he was overtaking as he could and says the last thing he thought was " oh F*** Everyones going to think i was being a tw** overtaking where i shouldn't have been! Amazingly the lorry just took of his side mirror!!

He still doesn't understand how hes still here and how all three of them managed to stay on the road!

I'm lucky, i never died acctually XD.
but some years ago when we where celebrating new year we shot a big ass firework up in a tree and it didn't blow up. I loved (still do) fireworks so the next day i went to get that firework back and blow it up. it was just the explotion left in the firework, not the thing that makes it fly away, and i had just a fuse to a little rocked.
It was windy and i tried to light the fuse, and then suddely the wind took the flame or the fuse went fast into the firework. anyway it exploded in my hand and i was flashed (like in Counter Strike but with black color instead of white) and i couldn't hear anything. i dodn't know if my hand where still sticking to my arm or if it was spread all over the place.
when the flash was over i saw that my hand wasn't badly harmed, just 13 holes in both of them.
have been other things that could have been killing me to, have seen the lightning strike down about 100 Meters away from me, overturn with a boat and other stupid things that is so damn fun but dangerours.

Me and my friend were stupid enough once, to take a shortcut behind some archery targets. We were about 35 meters away and we didn't see anyone practicing. We thought that the chances of someone actually shooting and missing the target in those 5 seconds as we walked by, were too slim to even consider. So we didn't consider it, untill an arrow flew right between our heads (1 meter or 3 feet away).

One day i was out kitesurfing, and i was standing on the beach with my kite in the air, talking to this guy. Suddenly the wind drops so my kite stalls and falls down dirrectly in front of me, making it catch the wind with full power. I was pulled over a windsurf-sail, through this beach tent full of kids, over a fence and ended up on a parking lot. If i had hit a car, i would probably have died.
Quite a lot of people have died from hitting stuff while doing this...

Yes ... very expensive ... but it's worth every penny;) ... and if you buy used equipment, you can get it much cheaper ... every year new kites are released and everybody sells thier ones from last year at <50% of the price...

I was born 3 weeks late. My skin was all crusty and dry and they said I would have died if they didn't induce labour that day :S

Ive also been hit by a car when I was riding a bike. bitch wrecked my seat.

One of the days I was in Maui the waves at the beach of my hotel were gigantic. Not North Beach huge, but at least twice the size of me (so about 12 feet?). For some stupid - and I mean stupid - reason, I decided to run towards one of the waves and do a full spread star fish jump. By that I mean I ran towards a nearly crested wave and jumped into it head on with my arms and legs spread out. Don't know why, maybe I thought it'd be fun?

Anyways, I immediately got knocked back and under, underestimating the force of this water beast. :P I hit the bottom and did at least three somersaults. By this time I had little to no breath left and was beginning to panic; I didn't know which way was up, and I knew the depth was enough because there wasn't one part of me that was dry (I was completely submerged). I think the Gods smiled on me that day because right before I passed out my feet found the bottom and I exploded from the surface.

Definately didn't go into the water for the rest of the day. :P

I was born with a hole in my lung. was in ICU for 2 weeks before I was able to go home. thats actually how I got my name. my mom would sing a song that had some line about "bring my baby back across the river Jordan" on her way home from church while I was in the hospital. named me Jordan.

I was also backbacking thru Glacier National park in Montana years back.
A bear came into our camp at night. we couldnt see it, but could damn sure hear it. my uncle started setting off bottle rockest to scare it away, except one of them hit a tent, and set it on fire. lmao, that was a crazy night.
A day or two after that, we encountered a bear in broad daylight. It walked straight towards us, slapping the dirt, growling and shaking its head back and forth. was maybe 50 feet from us. We jumped into the Lake and hiked 3 miles in the water. probably the scariest moment of my life.

then theres the time I got robbed at gun point. having a gun to your head is never fun.
had to run from a few shootings in my neighborhood too. I hate guns, heh.

Suddenly, I slipped down the slope that leads to the deep end. My mom was at the very end of the pool and she just watched me going under with a puzzled look on her face. I tried to wave my hands above the water but I was already so deep. My mom's friends saw me go under and she jumed in the pool in her NIGHT GOWN and saved my life.

You know, I've been hit by cars three times, broken just about every bone in my body, been in horrific auto accidents, fallen off 30-40 foot tall cliffs, had lightning strike a car's antenna not twenty feet away from me, and have had numerous guns pointed in my face, but I don't feel like I've ever been close to death.

I don't know if that means I'm lucky or stupid....

Probably a combination of both if that's true. I don't want to call you a lier, but that's kind of hard to believe.

the closest that i've ever been to death was at the Grand Canyon. i was walking by the edge and i slipped. Luckily my foot got caught in a root before i could start slipping of the edge (The ground was all gravel and dirt, making it easy to slide around on it). I fell with my face looking down on the cliff while the rest of my body stayed on land. . .Scary shit.

My little brother jumped on me when I was in the deep end of the swimming pool when I was younger. I didn't start drowning but it certainly was the closest to death I've been so far.

My dad passed a red light, thinking it was a green light. Thank goodness nothing happened.

At the age of one, I crawled out of my cage, er.. crib, and into the bathroom, onto the toilet, onto the sink, and into the medicine cabinet. I chugged a bottle of Dimetapp, and got through the child-proof seal on a thing of tylonol, and had lke ten of those. I was fine. Another time, more recently, I was sailing and was ht in the hea with the boom. I fell into the water and blacked out. I'd have died if not for my life vest. My girlfriend once got really drunk, and she thought whiskey was just as alcholic as beer, so she drank a whole bottle. She's only like a hundred pounds, too. Luckily, I made her throw it back up. And one of my dad's friend's at the Naval Academy was scheduled to fly the next week. It was the day before graduation, and they were in his dorm late at night, hanging out. He looked out the window and said "Man, I'm really ognna miss seeing those green lights on Stanbury Point" or something like that. He was red-green colourblind, the worst kind for pilots, because the lights that mark off the runway are red on one side and green on the other, so he'd have cme in the runway backwards.

i did that to. my moped got pretty much Phucked up.

Must have been in 6th grade, I got hit by a minivan on my bike. The speed limit on that street was 40. My friend was on my pegs, and I, of course, pedaling. Well, lets just say there was some miscommunication, I turned at the wrong time, and this lady just NAILED us.

The back of my wheel bends under her front bumper, and my friend flies off the pegs, off her hood, and about 20 feet away from the car. My bike has a shit fit, and shoots UP into the air, as I'm on it, I swear it must have been as high as the telephone poles. I feel myself start to do a backflip, so I let go of the bike and land hard on the ground. My adrenaline is pumping so much I don't even feel pain. I pick up my lone sandal which had flown off my foot, grab my bike, and check on my friend.

The lady who was driving the car pulls over, looks out and says " ARE YOU BOYS ALRIGHT?" We kind of half nod and she drives off. Bitch.

Anyways, I get home, walk into the kitchen, look at my mom and go...

" Mom, I just got hit by a car."

My mom pretty much flipped. My grandfather (her dad) died in a car accident when she was a teenager, so the ONE THING she fears is a car accident with her kids.

It was a miracle I didn't break or sprain a thing in my body.

For the story I DON'T really remember that much:

Probably around the age of 7 or 8, my parents were always on the road. I have a older half-sister that is 10 years older than me, and was married at the time, who would keep me at their apartment for the week they were gone. Well I had started having sore stomach problems, but everyone insisted it was only a virus, except her. She told me, it had gotten so bad that I wouldn't even let people touch me. After a few hours of her not knowing what to do, she went next door to this ladies house [who was a tarot card reader, mind you] and came back, then wrapped me in a blanket and took me to my aunts house, who is a nurse. I was rushed to the hospital when they realized my appendix was rupturing from infection. I had to be wheeled into an emergency operation. They told my sister that gangrene had started to set into my system from my appendix being ruptured and had I came in an hour later, it would have completely busted and killed me. Come to find out the reason my sister took me the hospital was because the woman read her "tarot cards" and told my sister that she needed to take me to the hospital FAST.


For the story I DO remember:

Maybe a year and a half ago I was working 2 part-time restaurant jobs, and going to high school. I had just broke it off with a guy i liked that night after pulling a semi double and my friends called. They wanted me to go to Grand Isle with them. I figured I deserved a break, so I was going to go. When I got off work, I headed over to John John's apartment to meet up with Will and Sonny. On the way over there I was basically falling asleep at the wheel, from waking up at like 5:30 to get ready for school, getting off school, running up to the hotel and doing some errands for the job, then rushing over to my head hostess job. I told Will I was too tired to drive, and Will told me he had been drinking too much to drive, which I respect that. Sonny told me he was straight to drive, that he hadn't drank since about 12 pm and it was ABOUT 11 pm at the time. I gave him the keys and we headed on our way [mind you this is a LONG ASS DRIVE. Probably about 3 or 4 hours, if not more]. Well I get in the back seat to lay down, because I'm so tired. About 3/4 the way there Sonny tells me he DOESN'T HAVE HIS LICENSE because it was revoked. I immediately get pissed and tell him to pull over at the next gas station that we are switching spots and that I couldn't afford any mistakes. Well he FINALLY admits he is completely drunk, and I couldn't even tell. I was steaming by then. Next thing you know, before we even make it to the next stop, he starts to drift off the road, over corrects, and we flip about 5-7 times. At this time I was in the middle seat. It was the weirdest feeling, because it's like... you KNOW you are about to flip even before you do. So right when the first blow hit, I started praying [yes... I'm a poon] and I didn't feel anything after that. Next thing I know I end up in the back of my vehicle somehow, except I can't move. I'm conscious and I can hear things and I kind of see things, but I can't move or yell. The vehicle had landed in a bayou, and Sonny and Will had already made it out of the vehicle. I could feel the water coming in the windows, but I was stuck between the back glass and the tire, because the frame had twisted [I had a 4-runner by the way]. Next thing I hear is Will saying, "where is Patience? I don't think she's got out yet". Then I immediately hear after that, "Don't worry about her, we've got to go before the cops come". I hear Big will scream something like, "Fuck that, she's going to drown" and then hear someone jump in and he yanked me out of the back. He puts me on shore, and I come out of it but immediately go into shock mode, and start uncontrollably shaking. The woman behind us had already called the cops, and the cops came maybe a few minutes afterwords. He let us hear the report and the lady had even told the COPS she thought I was dead.

I ended up taking Sonny's charges because his girlfriend was my friend and she was pregnant, and I knew if he had took those charges, she would end up having to get an abortion because she couldn't afford the baby as it was.

I ended up coming out of it totally fine. The skin from my shoulder down to my lower back was ripped off, and the joint in my thumb was broke, but nothing too bad.

Sucks what happened, but I realized how to appreciate life more, because in that same exact spot, there had been about 8 fatal accidents.... and we were the 9th accident. So we were the ONLY ones who didn't have someone die from wrecking in that spot. The cops said that the house that was in front of that spot has seen so many accidents it's not even funny.

Wow.. did you ever confront Sonny letting him know that you heard him basically saying to leave you to drown?!? :?

Yea, that is actually quite an evil thing to yell out, but remember that he was in panic, and possibly a part shockmode as well.

If you're in say, an air-plane, that has just crashlanded, the best tactic is go get yourself out of there, and disregard of anybody else, unless helping them only takes a single move. If you stopping to help somebody blocks the way, you endanger not only yourself, but everybody who's still in the plane.

The only difference here was that neither of the guys was in danger.. they were safe on land. He simply wanted to get out of there before the cops came probably because he'd been driving, his license had been revoked and he was drunk. :?

I haven't talked to him about it sense it had happened.

Actually I haven't talked to him AT ALL sice it happened.

Everytime we see each other, he just has a guilty look on his face, might say hi, then walk away. There's alot more to the story than I told though, and it's hard to really put put there since only about 2 or 3 people know the ACTUAL story.

All I know is, he's got a guilty concious as it is, and I don't feel like being the bitch about anything. Karma is a bitch..... and not my job.

I have almost drowned 3 times in my life.

I had a knife put to my throat.

I have had to run away from a tornado (literally run away from it) as it inadvertently destroyed half of my trailer.

I almost fell off of a bridge while in a car because the roads weren't labeled right... It was a dark night, and our front right wheel fell of the ledge that lead to a rocky / water area. At the last second my father turned the wheel and the car was saved. Would have killed my entire family.

OH AND THE BEST ONE EVER!!!

I was hit in the fucking head with a machete. Full fucking force. =)

I got away from it with barely a scar though, cause i'm so uber! Lol ok maybe its just that i'm so lucky!

The tieing to the tree, also the doing of my brother. We lived out in the country area and there were alot of trees, so no body could find me for like ever. I guess she lost track of where I was because she did the "whoosh" thing straight in my face. I'm not sure exactly what happened. I got away from it with just a lip split in half and a scar for the rest of my life (but it is barely noticeable)

Lol he's a lot better now, he just went through a bad phase because my mother split up with his father and he hated me because I was his step fathers son. Thus hatred towards my mom marrying another man = hatred of me more than even the step father.

Course he hates his real father too because he is a bastard.

Now my brother likes me, and well...tolerates my father. Because he realizes we aren't bastards =P.

Course now my mother is split up with my father too hehe.

Divorce rates really are high these days huh? =P

I didn't even mention the drunken building climbing I did in college. I once fell about twenty feet down the side of a church I was climbing after the better part of a bottle of Vodka and more beer than I can remember. Probably the only thing that saved me that time was just how drunk I was.

So, let's see;

Hit by cars three times - once when I was five crossing the street in front of my friend's house a 1972 Ford LTD (I think it was Blue with a white vinyl top)came over the crest of the hill that I was just on the other side of. Slammed on it's breaks, but hit me anyway. Broke my left collar bone. Second time was in High School - was riding my bike on a pretty busy street going about 30 MPH when the front wheel came off the bike. The forks hit the ground and I sommersaulted over the handle bars doing a spectacular face-plant into the pavement that drove my teeth through my upper lip, took most of the skin off the right side of my face and bounced me into the path of an on-coming Corrola. I don't remember any of this of course because of the concussion, but my friends described it very graphically for me afterwards. Third time was in college - was stumbling home after a party when someone who wasn't stumbling and instead driving took out a fence, a stop sign and me all about the same time. No broken bones, but lots of cuts, scrapes and a really ugly black eye.

30-40 foot cliff - was 10 and at a city park near the Missouri River that is centered around this huge old oxbow of the MoRvr. There's a creek that falls down a cliff - really pretty little waterfall that has a legend of an Indian Princess who committed suicide by jumping off it after she was spurned by a lover - and runs on into the lake. Anyway, me and my buddy decided to climb the cliff face and walk across the top. The top was very slimy and mossy and I slipped and went straight off the top and landed on my ass and left elbow on the rocks on the bottom. Broke my hip, shattered my elbow and cracked three ribs.

Guns - robbed at gun point four times. First time when I was four, my dad picked up a couple of hitch hikers. They pulled a gun, pointed it at me and told my folks if they wanted to keep their kid they'd better give 'em all their cash. Second time I was 13 and at a video store that got robbed and the robber grabbed me and put the gun in my face before he threw me into the ice-cream cooler. Third time was walking to my car with my family after a ball game. Two guys came up behind us, smacked me in the back of the head with a gun and held my wife and three year-old daughter at gun-point while the first one went through my pockets and took my wallet, watch and wedding ring. Fourth time was in a casino parking lot. Stupid idiot must have thought I'd won or something. Pointed a gun in my face and said, "Give it to me you f...ing s...t!" Havng only went with $20.00 to begin with and having lost all that at blackjack, I didn't have anything to give him. I emptied my pockets and tossed my wallet on the ground. He took my car keys but was so stupid he couldn't find the car. He was still walking around the parking lot looking for it when the cops showed up.

More guns - was working at a home improvement store when I hear someone arguing with the guy at the paint desk. I look over just as the "customer" pulls his jacket aside to show the paint guy a gun in his belt. The paint guy was an ex-marine (scrawny, wiry, old guy) that apparantly didn't take kindly to being threatened with a gun. He put both hands on the paint counter and before the guy with the gun could do anything, paint guy litterally vaults over the counter putting both feet into the gun guy's face putting him on the floor and in the same motion comes down on top of his chest with his knees, the whole time shouting, "You gonna come in HERE and pull a gun on ME?? You STUPID mother f...ker!" and starts pummeling the poor stupid bastard.

Broken bones - too many stories to relate here but I was obviously an active kid who didn't always...ok seldom... alright NEVER did things the easy way or smart way.

Lightening? About a year ago, I walk out of the front door with my now 9 year-old daughter to check out this storm that was rolling through. We're standing under the porch next to the garage when the front of my neighbor's truck explodes about 20 feet from us. I thought it was the battery - 'cause, you know... sometimes those things just "blow up"... but as I go over there, I see the top of the tree that the truck is parked next to is on fire. I notice that the truck's antenna has been vaporized and that there's char marks down the tree trunk. I never heard the thunder clap nor saw the flash, but apparantly everyone else on the block did. They all came out of their houses to see what the hell happened.

But as I said, even with all that, I never really felt like I was close to death. So I guess you're right, almost certainly a combination of luck and stupidity.

I spilled very hot water on myself when I was like 2 or 3 years old had 75% burns on my body my grandfather donated blood that I required to survive.

I spilled some toxic chemicals my grandma had when I was very young as well under 5 years old.

A year ago I fell from 7 meters height I pushed myself from the building so that I wont crash on a fence that was under it. The fence could have seriously injure me.

I got hit by a car from behind good thing it was driving pretty slowly.

i had meningitis when i was 10. the doctors origionally told me i had tonsilitis and just shoved me off.. my mom got extremly worried about me as i didnt get better, i only got worse.. she took me to the hospital and the doctors had 2 give me 5 drips and the lumbar punchar (PAINFULL!) the doctors said if i had of gone to the hospital a couple of days later they wouldnt of been able to save me.. i was in isolation for 2 weeks and on medication for months!

I got stuck in a bathroom once in Israel. The door jammed or something. Now I am always in fear of being stuck in a bathroom.

Similar to lysergic and NeAvO, really, in that I nearly didn't make it.

I was born premature, as did my twin brother but it is reckoned I was conceived later. When I was still in there, my placenta tore away from the uterus wall. My mother went into full blown haemorrhage and I didn't have any oxygen supply for a few minutes so, causing a stroke, and with it damage to my brain leaving a faily big scar across the left hemisphere of my brain. Doctors had a C-section as my mother and I were close to death.

My brother had breathing problems and jaundiced so was rushed to St. Ormond's, which a famous children's hospital in the UK, for intensive care, fifty miles away.

He's fine now though. As is my mother. Me? Cerebral palsy with limited mobility in the right side of my body (most noticeably the two limbs causing a limp and a cool maximum elbow stetch of 45 degrees) and epilepsy.

Sucks but it could be worse. I can walk, talk fine... yeah could be a lot worse.

I also nearly drowned when I was 8 or so. It was strangely serene and I didn't bother me that I was about to die, kinda peaceful way to go. Still glad to see my dad though lol.

1) I'd gotten one of those pocket-bike motorcycles when I was five and one day, when I was eight, I was driving it down the sidewalk. My neighbor was backing out of his driveway and didn't see me. I tried to stop by hitting the breaks, but I was going fast enough to where my momentum carried me right behind him and he backed over me. I was stuck under his car with my head a good 3 inches away from his back tire. If he hadn't felt the impact and stopped when he did, my head would have been crushed.

2) I've been within a couple of yards of a few lightning strikes.

3) I was playing in a tree once, and I went to jump from one limb to swing on another. The limb I swung on broke and I fell out of the tree, landing on my back. The tree had some wooden planks around it, since it wasn't planted there as a seed, and my head had landed a good 5 inches away from a sharp piece of rebar that was sticking straight up out of the ground.

4) I was riding a horse back at a ranch in Texas, when I was about 9 or 10. A little ways away from the training circle was a fence that separated the barn area from the grassy field where they let the horses go to graze. Well, this horse that I was on suddenly made up her mind that she wanted to go graze, and that I was not about to stop her from doing so. She took off running toward the fence with me on her back, sprinting, full speed, toward the thin break in the fence which was the only way in and out of the grazing area. What I didn't realize was that there was a thin piece of metal wire that ran across the top of the break in the fence. (Why it was there? I have no idea.) Well I was already freaking out on top of this horse, and I didn't see the wire until after the horse had ducked her head under it. It was heading straight toward my neck - which, at the speed she was running, and as tight as I was holding on to the reigns, probably would have decapitated me, or at the very least snapped my neck.
Instinctively, I let go of the reigns and reached up, catching the wire in my hands just as it touched my throat, basically clotheslining myself on it. I did a backflip off of the horse, which kept on going, and I landed on my stomach on the rocks.

..it was a few days before I got back on another horse.

5) Another time, I was learning to do a backflip off of the edge of a pool. I cut it too close and smacked my head against the concrete. I was unconscious, underwater, and people had to jump in and pull me out.

6) I was riding my dirtbike through a field, and hit an old tire track embedded in the ground that I didn't know was there. It ran at an angle so it instantly turned my front wheel, ejecting me off of the bike and making me fly over the handlebars. I landed on my head, but was wearing a helmet.

7) Before hurricane Charlie ripped through here (back in '05 I think?) I was coming home from work. The storm had gotten up to the outer Orlando area, and was headed my way. I was in a phone room, so they made us work all the way up until the last minute, even though the storm was headed for us, and many of us had some pretty long drives to get back to our houses.
On the way home, I had to stop and get gas, right before I got on the interstate. Everybody was gassing up, so the place was really packed. While pumping, with the storm closing in, a huge blast of air blew through the gas station. It felt like a tornado had dropped right on top of us. Sand, rain and debris were litterally coming in sideways, and I was almost blown off of my feet. The people inside were so freaked out, that they pre-set the pumps as "paid in full", leaned out the doors and told us all to get the hell out of there. When I got on the interstate and headed home (which was in the opposite direction that the storm was coming), I'd heard on the radio that a funnel cloud was spotted right in that area.

I'm not sure how close I was to dying or not, but standing at a fuel pump is definitely not where you want to be when a twister lands on top of you. At the very least, what had dropped on us was a microburst. But, still.

8) I was doing about 75mph down the interstate with a friend of mine, and we were.....we'll say "not sober." Suddenly my front, passenger-side tire blew. My car veered to the right, cutting across the lane beside me. Luckily I was able to take control and keep it from either slamming into the guard rail or flipping over.

That's about all I can think of, for now.

I once went swimming across a lake, about two years ago, I have two of my friends with me It was a small lake. The one was an ok swimmer the other was not. It started to rain, it was rain we thought nothing of it. As we got to the middle of the lake we heard thunder!.so being that we were with a swimmer who wasn't a stong one we decied to yell for help from the people on the beach. The decied that since we were out of the beach bondariays we were swimming at our own risk ( which is totally true, but would you sit back and watch?) The stayed on the beach, they would have been safe had they come out on a kayak. The two girls started panicing, I was worried to but i have this weird ability to stay perfectly calm in a situation like that. The weak swimmer started saying how we were going to die and da da da... the other girl agrees... i stated gabbing on and ended by saying "I don't know about you guys but I WILL NOT DIE TODAY" (they have never let me live it down... i would have done the same in a reverce situation though) I sent the stonger swimmer ahead.I stayed back with other girl. it took us about 20 minutes and she gave up and asking me to"let her die" quite a few time but we finally got to a raft I climbed on the raft and helped her up. The second her last toe left the water lighting hit the lake.

I can only think of one instance in which I really felt the panic of possibly buyin' it: I was at a public pool with some friends and one of my buddies had this sister who had a crush on me (I was in my early teens at the time). They thought it would be funny to see if I mocked a drowning if she would "come to the rescue". So, my friends started dunking me underwater, which would have been ok- except we forgot to come up with some sort of signal for me to let them know when I needed air.

I remember freaking out as I tried to come up but they kept "playing along" and dunking me back underwater. I think I passed out for a couple seconds - next thing I know I feel myself resting on a pair of big boobies in my friend's sister's arms. Plan worked - too bad she wasn't exactly a Pamela Anderson. :?

When I was a wee lad, my car door swung open on a turn, I held onto the door, but my body fell out, since it was a turn, my legs slung under the car, somehow, I came back into the car... Completely unharmed... my legs should have been broken...

Another time, my family and I were in come caves on a tour, we got to one part where there was this thin little hallway like thing, which ended with a giant pool of water... the guide was telling us how it was bottomless or something like that. but because the cave got so thin, people were shoving so they could see it, I was in front, and just barely standing on a crappy rusty grate that went only about two feet over the water, leaving enough room for me to fall in if i were pushed. I couldn't swim at that age, and someone shoved again, I was pushed forward, and just barely caught before hitting the water. I wanted to kill everyone in the cave...

I was in the woods with two pals of mine, we started running to whatever we were heading for, and we were moving fast down hill, I tripped, caught myself, but I was centimeters away from a large jagged branch sticking out of the ground... It was pointed directly at my chest, had I not caught my self... I would have been stabbed through the heart... when I noticed this, I promptly shit myself. (Not really.)

I can't say I've had any really close calls with death, unless living under the authority of a drunken sociopath through my teenage years counts. The sociopath's son once shot at me with a rifle, but that was more a coercion thing. A kid came at me with a switchblade outside a convenience store by some projects in Delaware, but I used my book bag as a shield and stood him off with a 'neither frightened nor aggressive' stance that works pretty well against any aggressive animal, and eventually his friends got him out of there. I've had one dog come at me with serious intent, but again, 'neither frightened nor aggressive' and used my bag as a shield. I've gone airborne from a bicycle in numerous situations that could have ended badly, but didn't.

The only time I remember feeling like, "I almost died there," it was suicidal ideation. I was pretty depressive in my teens and sometimes indulged in suicidal thoughts and kind of kept that option open, and there came a time in my early 20s when I was feeling pretty alienated and like I "missed the starting gun"--and I'd just been dumped by a girl I never liked that much :P I hadn't thought about suicide in a long time, and it just crept up on me, until I was laying on my couch for at least thirty minutes very calmly planning it out, having given myself completely over to this purpose of ending my life. I reached the point of, "Well then, that's all set, guess we better get to it," and the impulse to action snapped me out of it for a second, and I reviewed what I'd been doing and about to do, and I was horrified. It's hard to express how this purpose of killing myself just took me over completely, like for that time it was all I was, a machine for destroying itself.

I was emotionally exhausted from both the circumstances leading up to the ideation and the bout itself, and the moment of clarity finished me off. I just sagged back on the couch and cried myself to sleep :embarrassed: When I woke up, I was really grateful to be alive.
