      Riddles From O'nus - 2

      A'hoy hoy,

This one is not a riddle that requires reasoning or questioning, so I figured I'd post it up as well.

      Here is the scenario:

You come to a fork in a road; in the shape of "Y" idea. One road leads to where you want to go; let's say Heaven. While the other road leads to where you do not want to go; Hell.

On each side of the road before it splits are log cabins. In each cabin resides a hermit. These hermits are brothers.

The trick here is, one hermit always tells the truth and the other always lies.

You may only ask one hermit, one question, in order to determine which road it is you wish to continue on to where you want to go (Heaven... or Hell, if you really want to go there ).

PS. If anyone feels these threads should be in senseless banter or elsewhere, please note so. I figured it was just as good here in The Lounge.

      ~

Simply ask one of the hermits which way to there village....if it is telling the truth, it will point in the right direction, and if it telling a lie it will point in the right direction...thats actually pretty simple ^_^.

edit:that is..assuming the one that tells the truth is the one in heaven..
      You guys suck.

yeah well thats that would kinda be irrelevent now wouldn't it. The whole point is to go to the place you wanna go (heaven... or hell?) If you ask for their village then you waste your question, unless their villages were in heaven...

      hmmmm......
awww man i cant even think of an answer... ok heres the only thing i could think of : Id ask one of them if they liked living with people. A true hermit and an honest person would say no. Assuming the honest one would live on the road to Heaven of course

      on a side note:
Hey! can i be in the non privileged club too? pm me

O'nus, by any chance are referring to the liar's paradox?

I believe it was something like "I am lying right now" is a paradox because he would be lying about was he has just said, but it is the truth, so...

Still, there is no reference to which hermit is which, so in this situation I would just use Global Positioning Software to determine the correct choice of action

You ask "What would the other hermit say about you?"
The honest hermit's answer: "He would say I was the liar."
The lying hermit's answer: "He would say I was the honest one."

Now it just depends on whether the honest hermit lives on the road to heaven like Dragon said.

Maybe.. "what would God say about you"?

Honest hermit: He would say that I had some problems, but was overall a good enough fella, blah blah blah.

Liar: He would say I'm GREAT!!!!

....Shooooooooooooot I just realized what Kalmah and Dragon said.

*sigh* Back to the drawing board..

Those questions are kind of chancey, too much of a risk.

It is possible to ask a question that will give you the definite answer. It is not a paradox.

      ok now im just confused
we could easily ask one of them if this was the road to heaven/hell but we still would have no way of knowing if he was lying or not....

lol @ yu-gi-oh paradox.... that card game is such a copy of magic the gathering its sad..[/quote]

5 minutes of thought into the extremeties of my theoretical solution, and I would have had the correct answer. I KNEW I was on the right track. Just gave up though.

      Re: Riddles From O'nus - 2

Okay, I'm gonna have to write this down. Let's say left is heaven in this scenario and right is hell, but the person dosen't know that.

I am assuming that they both live randomly: ie they could and could not be living on the road to heaven. Asking them a question relying on the fact they live on a certain road is no good. We need to get a definite anwser from these annoying hermits.

NB: I got the anwser! Scroll all the way down through the writing and tests and stuff.

      Asking Random Questions
Q1) Which way leads to heaven?
      Truth Hermit = Left
      Lie Hermit = Right
      Wrong Question

Q2) Which way must I not go if I want the road that leads to hell?
      Truth Hermit = Left
      Lie Hermit = Right
      Wrong Question

Q3) Which road must I not go on if I do not want to go to heaven?
      Truth Hermit = Left
      Lie Hermit = Right
      Wrong Question

Q4) Which road do I not go on if I do not want to not go to heaven?
      Truth Hermit = Right
      False Hermit = Left
Wrong (and too bloody confusing) Question

Right, stuff that. My brain hurts.

      The Hermits Themselves

The Truth hermit is always gonna tell us the truth. The false hermit is always going to say a lie. If we can play on the fact that the false hermit is always going to tell us a lie then we might be able to get it.

      Asking the False Hermit Questions
(Heaven Road = Left & Hell Road = Right) for this exercise.

Q1) Which way leads to heaven?
      Right road (hell road)

Q2) Which way does not lead to heaven?
Left road (heaven road) - but truth hermit will point to hell road as he tells the truth.

Q3) Which way does not lead to hell?
Right road (hell road) - but the truth hermit will say the opposite.

Q4) Which road do you not live on?
Hang on...this could be it. Let's assume the false hermit is on heaven road and the truth hermit is on hell road, then I'll do it the other way round.
False Hermit = I do not live on the heaven road.

Truth hermit is now on heaven road, and the false hermit on hell road:
False Hermit = I do not live on the hell road.

But if we ask the truth hermit the question, they'll just anwser the same, and we have no way of finding out which hermit is which.

      Questions that we cannot ask
Anything on the lines of "which way leads", no matter how many double negatives you put in it, is a completely useless question. So I'm not going to ask that again.

Any question about the hermit's personality. Relies on them to be on one of the roads.

      More Theory

The riddle states that they are both brothers...I guess this must be an important fact otherwise it wouldn't of been included. It could be a red herring but still, let's have a go with it.

      "Brother" Questions
For this exercise, I'm going to pretend the truth hermit is on hell road (right) and the false hermit on heaven road (left).

Which road does your brother live on?
      truth hermit = heaven road
      false hermit = heaven road

Which road does your brother not live on?
      truth hermit = hell road
      false hermit = hell road

      What is your brother?
      truth hermit = a liar
      false hermit = a liar
      [useless]

What would your brother tell me if I asked him the road to heaven?
      truth hermit = right
      false hermit = right
Ah, that's IT! You ask them that question then take the other anwser, and you will go to heaven.

      Anwser
I knew I'd get it eventually

ask: What would your brother tell me if I asked him the road to heaven?
      Then take the opposite road.

      Bashing everybody else
Simply ask one of the hermits which way to there village....if it is telling the truth, it will point in the right direction, and if it telling a lie it will point in the right direction...thats actually pretty simple ^_^. *

edit:that is..assuming the one that tells the truth is the one in heaven..[/b]
I know what you did. You got that anwser from a site- I know of a site with a exercise very similiar to this, so you did a sneeky google eh? The anwser you just gave us was the anwser that site had. [which is the wrong one because this is a slightly diff exercise]

if you can ask each of them 1 question, then ask one if another dude is

his brother. If he answers "yes", then ask another hermit which road

leads to hell and choose it (as it will lead to heaven).

if he answers no, then ask another hermit which road leads to heaven.

If you are allowed to ask only 1 question per 2 hermits, then i dont really know

      *walks into a cabin*

"Exuse me MISS(or MISTER if its a woman), is this the way to heaven?"

If its the truthful one he will say:

"Im not a woman!" and then he will tell you if its the road to heaven or not, if its you walk this road if its not you dont

Its the lying one he will say, yes or no, but it doesnt matter, he will lie about his sex and you will do the opposite of what he says

      =P

Its quite tricky, you can ask alot of 2 in 1 questions which really IS one question, because you are not really asking =P like "Hey of brother of the guy that lives on the other road"(hes not my brother) ^_^ probally doesnt count =P

      how about this:
go to one of the hermits and ask if he has a brother.
      the liar would say "no".
the honest one would say "yes".

if the answer was "no", go to the next hermit and ask the way to heaven, (asuming thats where u wanna go...) he will give you the right directions since he is the honest one.
if the answer was "yes", go to the next hermit and ask the way to heaven, since he is the liar take the oppisite road...

that was pretty simple. am i right?
