Forums don't work on the concept of 'when people die.' They work on the concept of when people leave. DV already seems to be entering a new sort of era, you just have to know where to look to see the signs of it.

And when new people come, they don't ascend into positions of power, look at the old stuff, and decide to close it all.

well, but what happens when we DO die? When we are all gone? How do you think the new people ..... will be like? or do? or... what? idk. just when all of us are gone. What do u think it will be?

Are you expecting everyone on DV to just up and die suddenly? If you are, I'd like to kindly ask you to GTFO before you kill us all.

Are you expecting to stay around DV for teh remainder of your life? I doubt many people are planning to stay around until they day. People will leave, while new people come and learn the ways here. That's how it works. Period. It works like that on every forum. New people come, become members and older members eventually leave.

Seriously. That's all there is to it. New people come, older people leave. Rinse and repeat.

Just look at older members that don't post any more. Kaniaz, whoever. People get phased out gradually as they leave the forum, generations don't just 'disappear'. It evolves as people come and go, not in sudden shifts. You don't blink and say, "Whoa, Mes isn't here. Things have changed."
It happens slowly, in stages, and you adapt with it. Usually. You might look back and think about how different things have become, but it shouldn't be a 'weird' thing.

Like you might move from one circle of friends to another, gradually, or add friends and lose friends. It happens slowly, usually, in a fairly natural fashion.

...what am I talking about, a forum without Siиdяed? You guys would freak out.

the forum will develop artificial intelligence, become self-sustaining and take over the government.

this isnt the forum's first generation. The forum was alive way before you came on, and there were generations of people before you got here. This "new" generation doesnt even know who leo volont was, except for the older folk. And i bet there were notorious forum villans the the people who remember leo volont dont remember. People come and go. And unless a bomb goes off, the whole forum isnt just going to die out all at once.

so yeah.

I am glad to be mentioned in the names of people who might die and hence change DV... if at least momentarily.

What if we performed an experiment where we forced all of the current members to leave (by death or other such exits). How would the forum change with the onslaught of entirely new people? (I think that's what he wanted to discuss, not the realities of some people leaving, some people joining... We all know about that, so it's not all that interesting to discuss.)

I think if the above happened, there would basically be a bunch of chaos until a few people decide to take some leadership positions and bring some order. Or maybe there would be so much chaos that the community would just crumble and die.

That would be a very interesting experiment.

This forum is already in its third or fourth generation, which is pretty amazing for as short a time as we've been around. I get the impression from many of the "old timers"* that the DV they knew and loved IS dead and gone. That doesn't take anything away from what we have here now - it's just different. This place has grown fast.

It is very different from when I started, which wasn't that long ago at all. People come and go, and as they do the "personality" of the forum changes continuously. But so long as there is an interest in lucid dreaming, Dream Views will have value and will continue to justify the cost of keeping it alive and maintained. I expect that a time will come when something is going to make lucid dreaming a global "hot commodity". When that happens, we're going to be recognized as one of the originals.

In the meantime, being the best remains our goal.

*Using the term "old timers" in a forum that started four or five years ago is kinda strange to me. Just to put it in perspective, there is a mailing list still running that I was involved in starting in 1993 - and which really started even before that on UseNet. There is one forum I've been a member of since '97 and which I'm considered a relative newbie on... But relative to our existence, the four and five year olds really are the respected elders here. We have to keep it in context.

But yeah, when I first joined, there were LOADS of different people around. But I consider myself more of the last and current generation.

I agree, although whether this is a change for the better is yet to be seen. I do know however that this is a far different DV to the DV I joined.
