U24 Asteroid vs Earth Jan 29

Got this off a guy on another forum

It's a little freaky how NASA, and yahoo have been deleting pages about this asteroid. Search for it yourself.
      2007tu24
It's almost a media blackout. This asteroid is a lot closer than they thought it would be, and they're not sure exactly how close it will get. They were saying that it would be well outside the moons orbit. Now they say it will be well inside. It's path is almost parallel with ours so it will get interesting on Jan 29.

holy shit. it's not like it's some small asteroid either, that mother is the size of the sears tower. all though i doubt it will make direct impact with our earth it should be fun to watch in the sky.

I should be floating, but I'm weighted by thinking

This TU24 asteroid isn't supposed to come closer than the moon's orbit, but being a 300-meter asteroid it's observed as an extremely strong target.

If I knew how far it was away from us, I could calculate whether or not we'd be able to see it... If it passes at night, we'll see one heckofa shooting star!

Wiki says that it will only brighten to 11th magnitude, which is nowhere close to the visible limit. Also, for it to be a "shooting star", it would have to pass into Earth's atmosphere, or else it just remains a point-like object.

Stupid science always has to ruin cool astroid effects!

Couldn't we try out all those asteroid deflection theories?

I agree, let it hit Toronto. Or some other city thats basically a tumour on the face of the earth

We could, but then we wouldn't get to see an awesome light show. Is it bad that a (rather large actually) part of me wants earth to be hit?

Given that the risk of impact to a densely populated area is very low, I wouldn't mind seeing a medium-sized impact event (something on the same order as Tunguska). It would be a huge opportunity for scientific research.

They should have a space shuttle mission and video tape this if they can without being hit by debris if it will hit the moon.

I hope you don't really think that. No matter how bad humans may be, i'd rather not be hit by an asteroid

I wouldn't mind if the Middle East was replaced with ocean. That'd solve a bunch of problems right there.

Its not like we humans as a race have any divine right to life that makes the destruction through natural disasters some sort of perverse action on the part of nature. There would be no point complaining if the Asteroid does hit us (in my opinion it would just be a quicker way of ending the species than what we are doing to ourselves).
